SMALL SCALE MICROENCAPSULATED PIGMENTS AND USES THEREOF
Encapsulated thermochromic pigments having an ave diameter from 3 to 5 microns may be poorly suited for use as a metal decoration ink for high speed application to a metal can, as problems can arise in the ink rheology with this relatively large particle size which may lead to misting as the ink is transferred at very high speeds. The method for making encapsulated thermochromic pigments provided herein can produce particles with sub-micron dimensions, whereby the method incorporates an anionic surfactant and a deflocculant to provide a dewatered slurry containing the encapsulated thermochromic pigments, which can then be used to make inks that show considerably less misting and better transfer to metal cans at high production line speeds, such as speeds exceeding 1000, 1500, or 2000 cans per minute. Additionally, these encapsulated thermochromic pigments can be used in ink jet printing applications.

A microencapsulation process is improved by adding a stabilizing agent that contains one or more catalytic organo-metal oxide materials, such as metal soaps. This functions as a crosslinker by causing unsaturated bonds in the microcapsule walls to react, thereby stabilizing the microcapsules against the effects of additives to coatings that, otherwise, degrade the functionality of thermochromic or photochromic materials at the microcapsule core.

Thermochromic coatings are improved by mixing thermochromic capsules with polymer resins in a manner that imparts shelf stability to flowable precursors that may be cured quickly using dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid and/or other acid catalysts to form relatively hard coatings that are capable of withstanding machine operations, such as the operations needed to make beverage can lids, bottle caps, pull tabs and the like.
A housing (300) is provided with a thermochromic level indicator (308). The housing may be, for example, a beverage can or bottle. The housing has a wall presenting an interior space capable of retaining matter at a first level within the wall. The housing also has an opening or lid that may be opened to permit the matter to exit from within the wall or enter into the wall such that the matter assumes a second level (311). The wall supports a level indicator (308), which is formed of thermochromic ink. The thermochromic ink has a color transition temperature capable of acting as a level indicator by sensing temperature of the matter retained within the wall in an intended environment of use as the matter transitions between the first level and the second level. By way of example, the matter may be a beverage and the wall forms at least part of a beverage container.
G01F 23/22 - Indicating or measuring liquid level or level of fluent solid material, e.g. indicating in terms of volume or indicating by means of an alarm by measuring physical variables, other than linear dimensions, pressure or weight, dependent on the level to be measured, e.g. by difference of heat transfer of steam or water
A47G 19/22 - Drinking vessels or saucers used for table service
Dye and developer components of a leuco dye system are separately microencapsulated. The microcapsule walls are fragile to the point of being easily ruptured. The microcapsules are mixed combined into a coating composition that is applied to a substrate and dried. Forces applied to the substrate, such as by the application of fingers or a writing instrument, rupture the capsule to produce a color change by interaction of the leuco dye system components that are released upon rupture of the capsules.

The present disclosure is a method for controlling the hysteresis window and improving the color switching properties of reversible thermochromic dye systems. The method adds preferred co-solvents to existing reversible thermochromic dye systems in order to decrease the temperature range between the full color point and the clearing point. The co-solvents also add resistance to ultraviolet radiation.
Metal deco ink formulations are improved by the use of fluorescent dyes, UV- absorbing dyes and/or IR-absorbing dyes. These may be premixed with a phenol- formaldehyde resin without microencapsulation to protect the dye from other ink ingredients that have chemistries which are incompatible with that of the dye, in order to obtain photochromic ink formulation with a good shelf life.
