Abstract

Embodiments relate to a friction stir welding apparatus. The apparatus includes a friction stir welding unit that rotates a welding tool about a spindle axis at a spindle rate of rotation (Sr-o-t), causes the welding tool to travel in a direction perpendicular to the spindle axis at a travel speed (Tspeed), and causes the welding tool to impart a downward force on a workpiece at a plunge force (Pforce). A sensor module detects a spindle torque and generates a representative spindle torque signal. A control module receives the spindle torque signal and generates a command signal and/or recommendation signal to modulate the Sr-o-t, the Tspeed, and/or the Pforce in response to the detected spindle torque. The control module generates the command signal and/or the recommendation signal to modulate the Sr-o-t, the Tspeed, and/or the Pforce so that the detected spindle torque stays within a range of spindle torque values.

Abstract

A modular and scalable system configured to generate a topology platform for training, entertainment, gaming, living, working, acting, viewing, etc. The platform can have a plurality of movable columns that are extendable and retractable. In some embodiments, some of the columns can be retracted to allow users to walk on the columns while other columns can be extended to form a barrier (e.g., wall) or form an inanimate object (e.g., table). The system may be used in furniture to provide topologies for highly customized support structure designs to accommodate varying body shapes, sizes, and individual comfort levels. The system may be used to generate topologies for greenscreen film stages to provide post-production editing, compositing with actors, stuntmen, and video, etc. The platform can be configurable and re-configurable to change the objects and features of the topology and represent different or dynamic environments at any time.

Abstract

A tool for performing work on a workpiece, such as a pipe, includes a mandrel assembly configured to secure to an interior portion of the pipe. The mandrel assembly includes an arm assembly configured to retain a cutting apparatus so as to be positioned at an outside portion of the pipe and to allow the cutting apparatus to revolve around the circumference of the pipe to perform work on the pipe. The mandrel assembly includes a hub and a plurality of jaws that allow it to secure to the interior of the pipe while the arm assembly props the cutting apparatus in a position to facilitate performing work on the pipe around the entire circumference of a section of the pipe. The engagement between the mandrel assembly and the pipe supports the weight of the tool, providing ease of use and improved control for pipe cutting operations.

Abstract

The current invention includes an additive manufactured electrode that may be used for a flow battery system. In some embodiments, the electrode may include a composite material and/or at least one flow channel to direct, or at least influence, flow of electrolyte. The flow channel can be formed onto a surface and/or within a body of the electrode, and may be used to generate fluid pathways that cause the electrolyte to flow in a certain manner. The composite material may include a rigid core and a flexible compressible outer layer that may improve reactions zones, enhance mechanical properties, and/or provide low-pressure paths for electrolyte to flow.

Abstract

Embodiments can include a self-reacting friction stir weld (“FSW”) tool. The device can be configured to be portable and produce full penetration welds in situ. The FSW tool can include a system that cuts out a portion of the structure surrounding a defective portion of the structure. A work-piece can be inserted within the removed portion and friction stir welded to the structure via the FSW tool. A superior repair as compared to merely welding the defect can be achieved by replacing a portion of the structure surrounding the defect as opposed to merely welding the defect (e.g., the crack). A controlled geometric shaped weld beam can be generated for the interface between the work-piece and the structure, which may led to a stronger, more reliable weld.

Abstract

A method of producing a 3-dimensional (“3-D”) product from metals in the gaseous state includes the steps of providing a substrate of 3-D shape; providing a flow of a gaseous chemical compound(s) around the 3-D substrate, wherein the gaseous chemical compound(s) comprises a metal carbonyl gas; selectively heating the 3-D substrate to decompose the metal carbonyl gasses, wherein metal separated as a result of the decomposition is deposited on the 3-D substrate; selectively controlling the flow rate of one or more metal carbonyl gasses and the temporal and spatial temperature distribution throughout the 3-D substrate to achieve a desired thickness distribution of the metal or metals on the 3-D substrate; and removing the 3-D substrate to produce a resulting 3-D metal product with an complex geometry.

Abstract

A self-sealing flow frame is provided having a first frame component and a second frame component. Each frame component is provided with a tongue-and-groove configuration that when assembled forms a tessellation engagement, which creates the seal. When each frame component is assembled into a flow frame, with the inner surfaces facing towards each other, the tongue-and-groove arrangements create a seal profile that circumscribe constituent parts of a device within which the self-sealing flow frame is being employed. As the frame components are compressively secured and fastened together, a tessellation engagement of the seal profile forms the fluid seal. Fluids of the device are prevented from exfiltrating the device, and are contained within the self-sealing flow frame by the fluid seal.

Abstract

A self contained energy generating system that comprises a galvanic battery and a power distribution system. The energy generating system is used to purify water by using a reverse osmosis device that draws in a source of water and transfers electrolytes to the galvanic battery. Upon contact with the electrolyte, the galvanic battery produces energy by an oxidation-reduction reaction of the cathode and anode and transfers energy to the power distribution system, which in turn provides power to the osmosis device. Additionally, the system includes a hydrogen fuel cell to increase the amount of energy generated and a power storage device for storing excess energy generated. The system also includes a controller which is configured to regulate the overall operation of the system.

Abstract

Aluminum-magnesium alloys are ideal for ship construction; however, these alloys can become sensitized and susceptible to intergranular corrosion when exposed to moderately elevated temperatures. A stabilization treatment has been developed to reverse sensitization and restore corrosion resistance, such that in-service plate can be refurbished rather than replaced. This treatment involves a short exposure to a specific elevated temperature range and can be implemented with portable units onboard a ship.

Abstract

A segmented track made of a plurality of elastomeric track segments is provided. Each track segment is made of reinforced elastomeric material and is provided, at each end thereof, with a joint element adapted to be connected to the joint element of adjacent track segments. Each track segment comprises longitudinally extending reinforcing elements which are embedded into the elastomeric material and which are extending between and coupled to both joint elements.
