Abstract

A neurocomputational electrochemical sensing device (1) is proposed for predicting properties of a substance. The device (1) comprises: a plurality of electrochemical sensors constituting a sensor array (3), the sensors being sensitive to sensed attributes advantageous to predict a set of properties of interest of the substance, each sensor being configured to output a sensor output signal indicative of a sensor response of the respective sensor to measurable changes in the sensed attributes of the substance; a readout circuit (5) for biasing the sensors and for conditioning the sensor output signals into readout circuit output signals to facilitate further processing of the sensor responses; and an artificial neural network processor (7) for processing the readout circuit output signals, the processor (7) comprising neurons interconnected by synapses, the processor (7) being configured to output a set of processor output signals whose signal values are indicative of the properties to predict. The sensor array (3) comprises first electrochemical sensors selective to properties correlated with the desired properties to predict, and second electrochemical sensors sensitive primarily to the main interferents of the substance. The neurons and/or the synapses are configured to be trained to compensate for sensor drift and/or cross-sensitivities upon generating the processor output signals.

Abstract

It consists of a system for palpation of the rectal face of the prostate that transforms the information collected into objective, reproducible and useful information. The system makes it possible to identify areas of high rigidity reaching the entire peripheral area, transforming a diagnostic maneuver for prostate cancer into an objective one, which until now has been subjective and unreliable. All this in a short space of time, carried out in a less aggressive and more objective way than rectal examination. The device consists of a manual electronic instrument with a handle (1) and a scanning rod (3), which includes at least two concentric force/pressure sensors of different heights, as well as an ultrasonic imaging system which, through means of connection to external devices for analysis/control, allows the data obtained to be analyzed and the anatomy of the prostate being analyzed to be visualized in real time.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a nanomechanical mass flow meter and controller device for open nanofluidic systems. Said device is based on the integration of semiconductor nanowires, either as open nanofluidic channels or as mass flow meters. Thanks to this configuration, the flow of conducting liquids along the surface of a semiconductor nanowire can be characterized at room conditions by applying a small bias voltage between the nanowire and a conductive support that sustains an ionic liquid reservoir droplet. Around 2- 3 V, the conducting liquid can be made to flow steadily along the nanowire with both great degree of control and high flow rate measurement sensitivity. This technology opens unprecedented perspectives for the development of open nanofluidic applications, for which although several mechanisms to induce liquid flow have been explored, a technology that provides accurate real-time measurements of mass flow had never been proven.

Abstract

Apparatus and methods for sampling air-borne particles. According to one embodiment a nozzle is used to generate a jet of fog that includes a gas and liquid droplets. The jet of fog is formed by the nozzle in a way to cause particles in the air surrounding the jet of fog to be drawn into the jet of fog and to further cause the particles to aggregate with the liquid droplets inside the jet of fog. A sample collecting surface is located opposite and spaced apart from an outlet of the nozzle. The sample collecting surface is preferably sloped so that the liquid sample can be forced by gravity off the collecting surface and into a liquid sample container. Inside the jet of fog and on the sample collection surface the liquid droplets merge with one another to form larger sized droplets that are collectable in the liquid sample container.

Abstract

A method estimates a full shape of a crystalline lens from measurements of the lens taken in-vivo by optical imaging techniques and include visible portions of the lens. The method includes receiving the in-vivo measurements of the lens, determining non-visible portions of the lens parting from the in-vivo measurements. Determining non-visible portions of the lens includes establishing a location of points which define an initial full shape of a crystalline lens, displacing these points by lengths following a directions to a location of a second set of points, which are estimated points of the full shape of the lens. The initial full shape of a crystalline lens is obtained from ex-vivo measurements and the lengths is estimated from the in-vivo measurements. A further method selects an intraocular lens implantable in an eye. Yet further, a data-processing system configured to determines a full shape of a crystalline lens.

Abstract

A modular artificial neural sensing system includes a hierarchical network of neural sensing units including a neuromimetic sensor array of artificial sensory synapses and sensory neurons for receiving physicochemical sensed signals and for outputting sensor output signals. An artificial neural network processor is adapted for processing the sensor output signals and includes processor neurons interconnected by processor synapses forming first connections and second connections. The processor outputs processor output signals. A first sensor interface feeds processed or unprocessed sensed signals into the processor. A second sensor interface receives output predicted signals from other neural sensing units and feeds processed or unprocessed output predicted signals into the processor. A signal decoder decodes the processor output signals and outputs decoder output signals. An error feedback module receives the decoder output signals and teaching signals for generating error signals depending on a difference between teaching signals and decoder output signals.
