Abstract

A syringe assembly comprising a barrel for containing one or more medicaments, the barrel having a front outlet for allowing the expulsion of said one or more medicaments from the said barrel through said outlet, and a first stopper disposed in the barrel and axially moveable therein and defining a first volume in the barrel axially forwards of the first stopper and a second volume in the barrel axially rearwards of the first stopper. The first stopper has a two way valve that is moveable between a sealing configuration and an open configuration to selectively put the first volume in fluid communication with the second volume. The two way valve is moveable from the sealing configuration to the open configuration by an increase in fluid pressure in either of the first and second volumes. The syringe assembly additionally comprises a second stopper disposed in the barrel axially rearward of the first stopper and axially moveable therein, the second stopper providing a fluid tight seal at a rear end of the second volume. The syringe assembly further comprises a first plunger rod connected to the first stopper and extending axially rearwardly through the second stopper, the second stopper sealingly engaging with the first plunger rod but permitting axial sliding of the first plunger rod therethrough. The first plunger rod is axially moveable so as to axially move the first stopper and pressurise either of the first volume and second volume causing the two way valve to move into the open configuration and fluidly connect the first volume and second volume.

Abstract

An injection device having an outer housing configured to receive a syringe. The syringe has a barrel for containing medicament and a needle in fluid communication with the barrel. The device further has a needle shield axially moveable relative to the outer housing between a needle covering position and a needle exposing position and a biasing means to bias the needle shield axially forwardly toward the needle covering position. A locking sleeve, axially movable relative to the outer housing between a non- locking position and a locking position, selectively limits axial movement of the needle shield. In a first configuration, the needle shield is axially slideable within the locking sleeve to permit rearward axial movement of the needle shield from the needle covering position to the needle exposing position. In a subsequent configuration, the needle shield is prevented from moving axially rearwardly by interference with the locking sleeve, thereby maintaining the needle shield in the needle protecting position. The device may reduce the risk of needle stick injuries when compared to known injection devices and also may prevent unintentional reuse of the device.

Abstract

A medicament delivery device has a syringe, a housing, a needle shield, a biasing member and one or more blocking members. The needle shield is biased axially forwardly by the biasing member so as to selectively cover a needle of the syringe. However, the biasing member is prevented from biasing the needle shield axially forwardly until a radial movement of the blocking members has occurred, which is precipitated by a forward axial movement of the syringe. Consequently, the forward movement of the syringe releases the needle shield to automatically make safe the device.

Abstract

A syringe propellable by a propellant that boils at a predetermined temperature, the syringe comprising a barrel having an outlet at a front end, a stopper axially moveable in the barrel, and a third chamber for containing propellant. The stopper defines and separates a first chamber and a second chamber, the first chamber being axially forwards of the stopper and being configured for containing a medicament, and the second chamber being axially rearwards of the stopper and being configured to receive propellant for acting on the stopper to move the stopper axially forwardly in the barrel to expel medicament through the outlet upon actuation of the syringe. The syringe is configured such that, in use, upon actuation of the syringe, liquid propellant is released from the third chamber and boils outside of the third chamber at or above the predetermined temperature to provide an increasing vapor pressure in the second chamber that causes the stopper to move axially forwardly and begin to expel medicament from the first chamber through the outlet. During forward axial movement of the stopper in the barrel, propellant vents away from the second chamber through a vent hole.

A medicament delivery device comprising a first container having a delivery outlet at a front end thereof and a first stopper axially moveable in the first container, the first stopper defining and separating a first chamber and a second chamber in the first container, where the first chamber is axially forwards of the first stopper and the second chamber is axially rearwards of the first stopper. The medicament delivery device further comprising a second container having a second stopper axially moveable in the second container, the second stopper defining and separating a third chamber and a fourth chamber in the second container, where the third chamber is axially forwards of the second stopper and the fourth chamber is axially rearwards of the second stopper, and where the third chamber has a vent outlet in fluid communication with a venting chamber. The first stopper is connected to the second stopper by a tensile member such that axially forwardly movement of the first stopper causes axially forwardly movement of the second stopper due to tensioning of the tensile member. The first stopper is driveable in an axially forwardly direction, the first chamber is configured to contain medicament for delivery through the delivery outlet as the first stopper moves axially forwards, the third chamber contains a viscous fluid that enters the venting chamber via the vent outlet as the second stopper moves axially forwards, and the fourth chamber has a pressure that is substantially equal to or greater than the pressure of the venting chamber. As the first stopper is driven axially forwardly, the tensile member is tensioned and causes the second stopper to move axially forwardly and the venting of viscous fluid into the venting chamber via the vent outlet retards the axially forward movement of the second stopper and the first stopper.

Abstract

A dispensing apparatus (for delivering metered doses from a pressurized dispensing container) having a housing receiving the container and a dose counter with dose indication element. The dose counter has an indexing mechanism advancing the indication element on container actuation. The dispensing apparatus has an indexing member moving within the housing in sync with the container wherein on actuation of the container in a normal mode of operation the indexing member interfaces with the indexing mechanism to apply a force to the indexing mechanism to incrementally advance the indication element. The indexing member and mechanism are configured to cooperate with one another, upon the input of a force in a second mode, such that the indexing mechanism transmits a force to the indexing member sufficient to generate a relative displacing movement between the indexing member and mechanism without incurring incremental advancement of the indication element.

Abstract

A syringe propellable by propellant that boils at a predetermined temperature, the syringe comprising a barrel having an outlet at a front end, and a stopper axially moveable in the barrel. The syringe further comprises a rupturing portion and a third chamber for containing propellant where the third chamber is rupturable. The rupturing portion is configured to rupture the third chamber upon actuation of the syringe to fluidly connect the third chamber to the second chamber and release liquid propellant from the third chamber so that the pressure in the second chamber increases at or above the predetermined temperature causing the stopper to move axially forwardly and begin to expel medicament from the first chamber through the outlet. When propellant is released into the second chamber the pressure in the second chamber increases over a first time period to a first pressure causing the stopper to move axially forwardly to begin expulsion of medicament from the first chamber through the outlet. The syringe is configured such that while the medicament is expelled from the first chamber the pressure in the second chamber changes over a second time period from the first pressure to a second pressure. When substantially all the medicament has been expelled from the first chamber the pressure in the second chamber increases over a third time period towards a third pressure. The magnitude of the second pressure and the rate of increase of the pressure in the second chamber during the third time period are controlled by the thermal conductivity of the components of the syringe defining the second chamber, the rate of delivery of propellant to the second chamber, and the phase of the propellant during delivery into the second chamber. The third pressure is substantially equal to the vapour pressure of the propellant at ambient temperature at the instantaneous volume of the vaporised propellant, and at the third pressure the syringe contains liquid propellant.

Abstract

A syringe propellable by propellant that boils at a predetermined temperature, the syringe comprising a barrel having an outlet at a front end, and a stopper axially moveable in the barrel. The syringe further comprises a third chamber for containing propellant. The syringe is configured such that, in use, upon actuation of the syringe, liquid propellant is released from the third chamber and boils outside of the third chamber at or above the predetermined temperature to provide an increasing vapour pressure in the second chamber that causes the stopper to move axially forwardly and begin to expel medicament from the first chamber through the outlet. The syringe further comprises at least one trigger for triggering an action upon activation of said trigger, wherein the trigger is activated in response to the pressure in the second chamber satisfying a predetermined condition.

Abstract

A syringe propellable by propellant that boils at a predetermined temperature, the syringe comprising a barrel having an outlet at a front end, and a stopper axially moveable in the barrel.

Abstract

A hand-held dispenser for dispensing a pharmaceutical product is disclosed. The dispenser has a housing providing a duct. A frangible membrane is provided in the duct. A probe with a piercing tip is mounted in the duct and arranged such that, in use the piercing tip pierces the frangible membrane. An air compression device is provided to compress air for expelling a pharmaceutical product through the probe and a channel is provided to substantially equalise the pressure in the air compression device and the pressure above the frangible membrane. The ability to substantially equalise the pressure in the bellows and the pressure above the frangible membrane on the sheath provides for a mote consistent release of pharmaceutical product when the frangible membrane is pierced. This is because the compressed air from the bellows which expels the pharmaceutical product through the probe does not encounter a sudden change in pressure as it passes the pierced frangible membrane with the entrained pharmaceutical product. In use, when compressed air is used to expel a pharmaceutical product through the probe, the air path through the probe has a lower resistance than the channel to substantially equalise the pressure in the air compression device and the pressure above the frangible membrane. This ensures that the majority of the compressed air is used to expel the pharmaceutical product. The piercing tip preferably comprises a generally annular cutting edge on an end portion of the probe with an interruption in the generally annular cutting edge.

Abstract

An inhalation apparatus for dispensing substances for inhalation. The inhalation apparatus comprises a housing, the housing comprising an air inlet and an outlet, the housing defining a socket for receiving therein a dispensing container, the dispensing container having a portion of reduced cross sectional area. The inhalation apparatus further comprises a section of reduced diameter intermediate the air inlet and the outlet. In use, the dispensing container is movable within the socket between positions one, two and three. In the first position (the rest position) the section of reduced diameter interfaces with the dispensing container to prevent or substantially prevent flow of air between the air inlet and the outlet. In the second position (the flow position) the section of reduced diameter is at least partially aligned with the portion of reduced cross sectional area of the dispensing container to thereby form a gap sufficient to enable a flow of air between the air inlet and the outlet. The third position is associated with dispensation of a product from the dispensing container into the flow of air.

Abstract

A metering valve used with a pressurized dispensing container, the metering valve has a valve stem assembly that slides co-axially within an annular metering chamber that surrounds the valve stem assembly and forms a substantially cylindrical chamber body. The metering valve also has an outer seal at the top of the cylindrical chamber body and an inner seal at the bottom of the cylindrical chamber body. The valve stem assembly has an outlet and an associated passage that is above the line of the outer seal when the metering valve is at rest, and is below the line of the outer seal when the metering valve is actuated, thereby creating a dispensing passage for the metering chamber's contents. The valve stem assembly has an inlet and an associated passage that is above the line of the inner seal when the metering valve is at rest, and is below the line of the inner seal when the metering valve is actuated. This arrangement controls the amount of material and fluid dispensed in each metered dose, as both passages are never open to the metering chamber at the same time. The valve stem assembly forms a straight, central passage extending from an open inner end of the valve stem assembly to a mid-point of the valve stem assembly located longitudinally within the metering chamber. The valve stem assembly has at least two elongated openings in a wall of the valve stem assembly to allow radially-directed flow between an exterior of the valve stem assembly and the central passage, the elongated openings being located to extend either side of the inner seal when the valve stem assembly is in the non-dispensing position. These elongated inlet passages serve to assure that the device is more reliable during use.
