Abstract

Method and apparatus for mixing within a rotary union of a computer numerical control machine a constant pressure gas with a relatively higher-pressure, lower-temperature dense fluid to produce a dense isobaric fluid deliverable through a rotating tool without gelling or solidifying therein. The constant pressure gas may include carbon dioxide, nitrogen, air or mixtures thereof. The dense fluid preferably includes liquid carbon dioxide at or above its triple point. The liquid carbon dioxide and isobaric gas are independently fed to the rotary union. When mixed, a pressurized flowing carbon dioxide machining fluid composition is formed exhibiting a temperature between about -7 C and 21 C at pressures between 5 atm and 68 atm.

Abstract

A nozzle device (10) for forming a composite fluid generally includes a nozzle portion (12) connected to a main body (14). The main body (14) includes an inner axial bore (20), an annular wall (28) and an annulus (36). The annulus (36) and annular wall (28) define an annular chamber (38). A portal (40) fluidly communicates the bore (20) with the annular chamber (38). The nozzle portion (12) includes a converging nose section (52) having an internal axial bore (58). An annular collar (50) extends from the nose section (52) and disposes at least partially within the annular chamber (38). A first tube (70) for transporting a first fluid (74) disposes within axial bore (20) and axial bore (58) A second tube (72) for transporting a second fluid (80) disposes only within bore (20), terminating proximate the portal (40). A propellant fluid (78) introduced under pressure into the bore (20) directs the second fluid (80) into the annular chamber (38) through the portal (40). The propellant fluid (78) and the second fluid (80) pass about the annular collar (50) and travel along the converging nose section (52) toward the exit port (56). The propellant fluid (78) and the second fluid (80) admix with the first fluid (74) exiting the first tube (70) and exit port (56) to form the composite fluid (76) outside the nozzle (10).
