Abstract

A device for opening bags within a material stream is disclosed. The device includes a hopper, a retaining tube having an interior wall surface, a plurality of bag opening mechanisms extending away from the interior wall and an auger comprised of a central axle and a helical ridge that wraps around the axle. A first portion of the auger is disposed in the hopper and a second portion of the auger is disposed in the retaining tube (30). The auger is constructed to move the material stream from the hopper through the retaining tub. An outer edge of the helical ridge forms a gap with plurality of bag opening mechanisms. As the auger conveys the material stream, bags within the stream are opened by the bag opening mechanisms. The size of the gap may be selected based on the size of the bags in the material stream.

Abstract

A system for sorting a mixed object stream is disclosed. The system includes a conveyance with a first moving outer surface constructed to move the mixed object stream. A sensor may be positioned adjacent to the first moving outer surface such that it detects the composition of the mixed object stream. A suction device controlled by the sensor is fluidly connected to a suction manifold. A perforated conveyance includes a second moving outer surface with perforations that are in fluid connection with the suction manifold. The suction manifold creates a suction region along the second moving outer surface and adjacent to the first moving outer surface. The sensor controls the magnitude of suction within the suction region to selectively pull the flexible objects from the first moving outer surface and convey those objects to an ejection target zone.

Abstract

A sorting apparatus is provided for sorting selected magnetically attractable articles from non-selected magnetically attractable articles in a stream of articles. A sensor generates sensor signals representative of a property associated with a selected class of magnetically attractable articles. A separator device includes an array of magnets. A controller receives sensor signals from the sensor, identifies a location within the stream of articles of a selected magnetically attractable article, and selectively activates one or more magnets of the array of magnets and thereby magnetically attracts the selected magnetically attractable article from a first trajectory into a second trajectory while allowing non-selected magnetically attractable articles to continue along the first trajectory.

Abstract

A system is provided for identifying at least one physical characteristic of items in a stream of items moving along a path through an inspection zone, and for separating items from the stream of items based upon the at least one physical characteristic. The system includes a movable transversely scanning mirror arranged to reflect electromagnetic energy from the inspection zone onto an array of detectors. The detectors of the array are arranged to sequentially receive electromagnetic energy so that on each transverse scan of the mirror for any given sub-zone within the inspection zone the detectors of the array receive electromagnetic energy reflected from the mirror at different times. The controller is then operable to correlate input signals from the various detectors corresponding to detected levels of electromagnetic energy received at different times from each given sub-zone within the inspection zone.
