Abstract

The invention relates to low VOC resin composition, comprising a polyester acrylic polymer having two or more polymerizable carbon - carbon double bonds in each molecule and at least one polymerizable vinyl monomer. Low VOC thermosetting polyester acrylic resins are made by esterification reaction of an unsaturated epoxide such as glycidyl methacrylate, and of a polyacid which is the half-ester formed by reacting a polycarboxylic acid and/or its anhydride with a polyol. The obtained low viscosity resin composition, is useful for making a low or zero VOC gel coat or a molded composite with excellent hydrolytic and weather resistance.

Abstract

An aqueous polymer dispersion contains zinc compound-modified polymer. The zinc compound-modified polymer is produced by the incorporation of zinc compound into the acrylic-modified alkyd by mixing at the temperatures of higher than 50oC. The resulting polymer is then dispersed in water by salt formation with a base. The aqueous dispersion of the present invention offers improved coating properties of early water-spot resistance, hardness, ink stain blocking and scrub resistance while demonstrating the viscosity stability.

Abstract

A coating composition is produced by forming an aqueous dispersion of a crosslinking agent and a resin that comprises the reaction product of an alkyd polymer, an optional surfalkyd, diacetone acrylamide, another acrylate monomer and optionally aromatic monomers wherein the reaction product is neutralized with either ammonia or an amine. A coating of the aqueous dispersion on wood exhibits at least some of the following desired properties: rapid dry time, good tannin blocking, good resistance to picking up dirt, good hot box stability and good exterior durability. Additionally, the inventive coatings appear to provide improved crosslinking compared to coatings comprising resins not neutralized with an amine or ammonia and/or not containing a surfalkyd.
