Abstract

A rotor including an internal fluid opening extending in a radial direction through the rotor and two ring seals disposed in opposed orientation on the rotor. Each of the two ring seals sealably and slidably engages the rotor. A stator is disposed around the rotor and the two ring seals and forms an external fluid opening extending in the radial direction through the stator. The stator includes two ring flanges disposed at axially distal ends thereof. Each of the two ring seals slidably contacts a respective one of the two ring flanges to form a mechanical sliding face seal.

Abstract

A rotary union for use along an incompressible fluid path between a rotating machine component and a non-rotating machine component includes a non-rotating seal carrier including a non-rotating seal element, which together with the non-rotating seal carrier define a net hydraulic surface on an internal side and a net pneumatic surface on an external side. Contact of an incompressible fluid under pressure with the net hydraulic surface creates a closing force, and contact of a compressible fluid under pressure with the net pneumatic surface creates an opening force.

Abstract

A rotating union communicates with a rotor member and is operable with either compressible or incompressible coolant media that enters the union through a media inlet. The union includes a housing having a counterbore and a tubular carrier member axially moveable in the housing. The union includes a primary seal assembly having a rotating seal member mounted to the rotor member and a non-rotating member mounted to the carrier member and a secondary seal member positioned about the carrier member. The range of the balance ratio of the primary seal assembly is disclosed when the primary seal assembly has imposed upon it a closing force, an opening force or no force.

Abstract

An integrated leak detection system for a rotary coupling provides improved leak detection and user convenience. In an embodiment of the invention, the system provides a leak detection sensor (25) located within the coupling, and in an embodiment of the invention the detection sensor is located beyond a back-up seal system. In an embodiment of the invention, the sensor and processing electronics are integral to the coupling housing. In yet another embodiment of the invention, the detection sensor is substantially symmetrically configured to detect leakage into a protected area regardless of orientation of the coupling. In an embodiment of the invention, the fluid being conveyed is electronically conductive and the detection sensor comprises an electrical conductivity sensor.

Abstract

A rotary union for supplying a heat exchange fluid to a rotating body includes a pair of hydrodynamic bushing bearings to retain the union housing within the desired alignment with the rotating body, a thrust bearing assembly secured to the rotating body, and a seal assembly positioned forwardly of the pair of bushing bearings. The hydrodynamic bushing bearings are located within the union and are lubricated by the flow of the heat exchange fluid within the union.

Abstract

A coupling seal assembly is described for directing a pressurized abrasive fluid between a non-rotating conduit member and a rotating second conduit member. The seal assembly includes a first ceramic floating seal member secured to the non-rotating conduit member and a second ceramic seal member secured to the rotating conduit member. Enhanced service life of the seal assembly under high pressures and high rotary speeds is achieved.
