Abstract

An artificial intelligence platform for electrification of a fleet of vehicles and an energy distribution system are described. The energy distribution system comprises a number of electric energy storage devices associated with vehicles in the fleet, as well as charging points. The configuration of the electric energy storage devices and the charging points is determined using an artificial intelligence platform and vehicle positional and energy consumption information. The platform allows for the iterative implementation of the process of electrification in a simple and predictable manner, given specific constraints, and provides energy distribution systems for electrical vocational vehicles in a flexible and cost-effective manner.

Abstract

An engine stop-start fuel saving system for a vocational vehicle propelled by a conventional internal combustion engine and powertrain. The system uses a low storage capacity, rapid recharge, high cycle life electric energy storage device, such as an ultracapacitor. The system also includes a generator that is coupled to the engine and that is connected to 5 recharge the electric energy storage device, as well as a motor that is powered by the energy storage device and that is coupled to the engine. The system also includes a controller that can activate the motor to restart the engine when it is stopped, and engage the generator to recharge the electric energy storage device, and that can subsequently stop the engine again when the electric energy storage device has reached a threshold 10 charge level. The electric energy storage device also powers at least one of: integral vehicle equipment; peripheral vehicle equipment; or an electrical outlet circuit with a socket for external plugin equipment.

Abstract

A fuel saving system for a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine and having a hydraulically activated automatic transmission. The system includes a hydraulic pump able to supply pressurized transmission fluid to the automatic transmission, an energy storage device, and at least one motor powered by the energy storage device including a motor that is mechanically connected to the hydraulic pump and a motor that is coupled to the engine. The system also includes a controller that is responsive to one or more operating conditions to turn off the engine when the vehicle is stopped and to use the motor that is mechanically connected to the hydraulic pump so as to activate the pump to supply sufficient power to the transmission to maintain engagement of the transmission in a driving gear. The controller is also responsive to one or more operating conditions to activate the motor that is coupled to the engine so as to restart the engine with the transmission engaged in a driving gear.

Abstract

A braking energy recovering system adapted for use on a vehicle and a vehicle having such a system installed. The vehicle has an engine-transmission assembly, a driveshaft, a braking system and an auxiliary system. The energy recovery system comprises a first pump, a hydraulic accumulator and a hydraulic motor. The first pump is a variable displacement hydraulic pump. The hydraulic accumulator is connected to the first pump and is operative to store hydraulic fluid under pressure. The hydraulic motor is hydraulically connected to the accumulator to receive hydraulic fluid. The motor is adapted to drive a second hydraulic pump, which is hydraulically connected to the auxiliary system, using hydraulic energy stored in the accumulator.
