Abstract

The present application relates to biodegradable elastomeric articles and methods for their production. In particular, the application relates to a method for the production of a biodegradable elastomeric article, the method comprising: preparing a solubilised biodegradation additive using a pH increasing agent and optionally a dispersant or surfactant; preparing an elastomeric film-forming composition by combining an elastomer and one or more cross-linking agents with the solubilised biodegradation additive; dipping a former into the elastomeric film-forming composition to produce a layer of the elastomeric film-forming composition on the former; drying and/or curing the layer of elastomeric film-forming composition on the former to produce the elastomeric article; and removing the elastomeric article from the former. The application also relates to an elastomeric film-forming composition for the production of biodegradable elastomeric articles, and biodegradable elastomeric article including as prepared by the method and from the film-forming composition.

A method for producing multi-layered elastomeric film or article, the method comprising: (i) dipping a mould into a composition for producing an elastomeric film having a total solids content of between 5%-40% to produce a layer of elastomeric film composition on the mould, (ii) partially drying the layer of elastomeric film composition on the mould to reduce the total water content of the elastomeric film composition to a level of not less than 22%, (iii) dipping the mould coated with the partially dried layer of elastomeric film composition into a composition for producing an elastomeric film having a total solids content of between 5%-40% to produce a further layer of elastomeric film composition on the mould, (iv) optionally repeating the partial drying step (ii) and the further dipping step (iii), and (v) drying and curing the layers of elastomeric film composition on the mould.

There is disclosed a composition for producing an elastomeric film comprising:
a synthetic polymer, sulphur, and a metal-oxide cross-linking agent. The
concentration of the total solids in the composition is between 5-20% by
weight of the composition. Also disclosed is a multiple-coating method of
manufacturing an elastomeric film comprising the steps of: (i) providing a
composition comprising a synthetic polymer, a metal-oxide cross linking agent,
wherein the concentration of the total solids in the composition is between 5-
20% by weight of the composition, (ii) contacting the composition with a mould
to form a layer of composition on the mould, (iii) contacting the layer of
composition on the mould with a further amount of the composition to form a
further layer, (iv) drying the composition, and (v) curing the composition.
