Device to Capture High Resolution Images of the Wheel Tread on a Moving Train
As a train passes over an array of cameras and lights that have been positioned between the rails of a train system, images are captured of the wheel tread. The number of cameras that will be used in the array may vary depending on the end user of the train system and its specific requirements. Software will capture the images of the portion of each wheel tread and reassemble the images in a linear format. The linear format for each wheel tread will provide an image that can be easily analyzed by the end user of the train system.
Trains that pass through an inspection portal must be analyzed for structural integrity through the capture of high-resolution images of the train, the train cars and the associated parts of the train car (hoses, knuckles and wheels for example). A directed source of light using the correct camera placement and lighting for the cameras is provided to ensure that the images are the highest resolution possible with the environmental factors that are present. It is imperative that the integrity of a train and its railcars be maintained. A defective part or parts on a train may cause the derailment of the train and its railcars. A derailment often causes serious personal and property damage. The use of artificial intelligence that has been applied to this system will detect possible flaws or defects in the railroad car. A portal through which the train will pass houses cameras and a means of illumination to take high resolution images of the train through the portal. This information is then stored on a software platform. It has a feature which can include a human in the loop process that verifies the accuracy of the information. The solution also transmits detected defect images and information to a remote location for analysis.
A plurality of modules housed in a chassis is secured to the railroad tie to capture high resolution images of the underside of a train car as it passes over the plurality of cameras. These images are important to insure the structural integrity of the parts of the rail car as well as the connection means—a coupler and pin—between two rail cars. The cameras are configured to capture at a predetermined rate or to operate in sync with the velocity of the train as measured by the Linear Speed Sensor. As the images are taken, the images can be downloaded and sent to a remote location for further analysis.

It is critical to take high resolution images of the sides of a train while the train is moving. A lens cap with a slit will be placed over the camera lens to direct the focus of the camera, which is likely a line scan camera. In addition to the lens cap a pair of blinders will extend a certain distance outward from the camera to block dust and debris and ambient light. A anti-reflective surface will be placed on the interior of the surface of the blinders to prevent glare and ambient light from interfering with the image that will be taken by the camera.
