Abstract

Method and apparatus for condensing a majority of the solvent in a process gas stream at low temperatures, e.g., below the freezing point of water, ca. −5° C. The gas stream exiting the condenser step may be further processed in one or more emission control devices, such as a single or multi-step series of concentrator devices, such as zeolite concentrator devices. One or more emission control operations can be carried out downstream of the single or multi-step concentrators. The aforementioned condensing process enables the one or more concentrators to operate in a favorable temperature range for removal of 99% or more of VOC, thereby meeting or exceeding strict environmental regulations.

Method and apparatus for condensing a majority of the solvent in a process gas stream at low temperatures, e.g., below the freezing point of water, ca. -5°C.

Abstract

Web lifter and/or stabilizer and method of lifting and/or stabilizing a travelling web and for coating a web. The device creates a web hold down force via a negative pressure slot at its exit side, which draws the web down against the surface on the entry side. The device can be actuated to move the web relative to a slot die coater off the die lips and stop the application of slurry to the web, thereby creating uncoated regions on the web surface. The device can then be actuated to move the web back into contact with the coater to start the application of slurry to the web, thereby creating coated regions on the web surface. Web lifting can be accomplished by rotating the device in first and second directions to lift the web off of the slot die coater and return the web back into contact with the coater.

Abstract

Cleaning air knife elements are assembled in a parallel orientation inside a housing enclosing the air knife assembly and in fluid communication with a compressed air source. In certain embodiments, the air knife elements are spaced apart a distance that orients the cleaning air knife discharge slots directly parallel and in line with the slots of the air nozzle or bar to be cleaned. Air discharging from the air knife discharge slots passes through the discharge slots of the air nozzle to be cleaned, dislodging dust and friable solid buildup from the air nozzle slots. Additionally, the cleaning air jet enters the air nozzle body, further dislodging dust and friable solids from the internal passages of the air nozzle inside the air nozzle body.

Abstract

Method of extracting syngas between the zone in a furnace where oxygen-starved combustion of biomass occurs and the zone in the furnace where secondary air is added to complete combustion, conditioning and cleaning the extracted syngas, and delivering it in a metered amount to the oxidizer or upstream of the oxidizer to reduce or eliminate the need for additional fossil fuels once the oxidizer has achieved its operating temperature. The gasifier or furnace burns solid waste and produces a syngas containing relatively high levels of CO, which is extracted from the furnace, conditioned, and introduced into an RTO as a fuel source. In certain embodiments, no extraction of syngas from the furnace takes place; the furnace conditions are manipulated so that normally undesirable levels of CO and other VOC's remain in the process stream. The heat from the furnace is used as intended (e.g., to heat a dryer), the stream is conditioned, and ultimately proceeds to a downstream RTO. Since the gas stream remains rich in CO and VOC's, its fuel value in the RTO is substantially higher than otherwise would be the case.

Abstract

Infrared air float bar for use in floating and drying a continuous planar web of a material in a dryer. Direct radiated or reflected infrared electromagnetic energy from an infrared light source in a removable channel assembly accelerates drying, or evaporation of solvents, or curing of web material passing in proximity to the bar, either by infrared electromagnetic energy, or in combination with convention airflow. The infrared source is cooled by pressurized air passing through an interior portion of the removable air bar channel assembly, and the air is further conducted into fluid contact with the web in an air gap between the emitter and web to promote convective heat transfer and to contribute to the air pressure field supporting web flotation. The removable channel assembly is configured for replacement of the infrared emitter and to allow the setting of the pressurized cooling air flow to the optimum level.

Abstract

Apparatus and method for the non-contact drying of a web of material. The apparatus includes air flotation nozzles for floating the web, and direct air impingement nozzles for enhanced drying of the web. The nozzle arrangement is particularly well-suited to float and dry light weight webs under moderate to high tension. Increased cushion pressure is created to support the web preferably with the same horsepower as conventional arrangements. The increased cushion pressure pad of the nozzle arrangement allows for good flotation with reduced velocities below about 11,500 FPM. Machine direction wrinkles are removed and the result is positive flotation with no marking on the web or ink build up on the air bars. The nozzle arrangement includes pairs of flotation nozzles directly opposing pairs of direct impingement nozzles. A perforated member can be positioned between flotation nozzles within a pair of flotation nozzles to control return air.

Abstract

The invention relates to an operating method for an atomiser (1) for the coating of structural components, particularly of vehicle body parts, with the following steps: Application of a spray jet of a coating agent through the atomiser (1); discharge of a first guide air flow (11) for the formation of a spray jet; determination of at least one application parameter (η, γ, T, BC/CC, Qvarnish, n, U,) which reproduces a property (η, γ, T, BC/CC) of the applied coating agent or an operating variable (Qvarnish, n, U) of the atomiser (1) as well as influencing of the first guide air flow (11) as a factor of the application parameter (η, γ, T, BC/CC, Qvarnish, n, U,). Within the framework of the invention, there is the alternative option that fluctuations of the application parameters and, based thereon, variations of the spray jet width are taken into account by means of an adaptation of the path spacing (d) between the adjacent coating agent paths for the purpose of keeping the path overlapping constant. Furthermore, the invention comprises a corresponding coating apparatus.

Abstract

Web stabilizer particularly for one-sided flotation of a running web. The device includes two discharge slots which allow for increased draw down force, which flattens machine direction wrinkles in a floating web. There is a primary discharge slot and a second discharge slot spaced from and stepped down from the primary discharge slot, a first web support surface between the primary discharge slot and the secondary discharge slot, and a second web support surface downstream of the secondary discharge slot in the direction of web travel. An integral blower provides a supply of air that is uniformly distributed to the primary and secondary slots. Air discharged from the primary slot is gathered into the air stream of the secondary slot and creates an increased air cushion to provide greater support to the web and thereby remove machine direction web wrinkles caused by higher tension in light weight webs.

Abstract

Electric drive for a switching valve, the switching valve having such a drive, and a regenerative thermal oxidizer including the switching valve and drive system. The electric drive system allows for the starting and stopping of the rotation of a rotary valve with accurate positioning. The stopping of the valve includes dissipation of the kinetic energy of the valve by electric means. The valve is allowed to move vertically and oscillating rotary motion is possible. The drive system preferably includes a gear, gearbox, variable speed drive and at least one positioning sensor. Valve acceleration and deceleration can be carried out in a controlled fashion and with repeatability, so that the final end position of the valve is consistent. The accommodation of vertical movement of the valve is also within the scope of the present invention.

Abstract

Dual sided coating system and method for coating substrates, such as substrates useful as battery electrodes. In certain embodiments, the system includes an inline calender station positioned between the dryer and the rewind of the substrate; i.e., positioned downstream, in the direction of substrate (or web) travel, of the dryer, and upstream of the rewind. In certain embodiments, the calender operation is positioned immediately downstream of the dryer; no intermediate equipment that processes the substrata, such as a vacuum dryer, is positioned between the dryer and the calender. Advantages of sucha system and method include twice the throughput compared to single side coating operations, a smaller equipment footprint compared to tandem coating lines, lower capital cost and operating cost compared to tandem coating lines, and fewer issues with wrinkles in the substrate.

Abstract

Method and apparatus for condensing a majority of the solvent in a process gas stream at low temperatures, e.g., below the freezing point of water, ca. -5°C.

Abstract

Electric drive for a switching valve, the switching valve having such a drive,
and a regenerative thermal oxidizer including the switching valve and drive
system. The electric drive system allows for the starting and stopping of the
rotation of a rotary valve with accurate positioning. The stopping of the
valve includes dissipation of the kinetic energy of the valve by electric
means. The valve is allowed to move vertically and oscillating rotary motion
is possible. The drive system preferably includes a gear, gearbox, variable
speed drive and at least one positioning sensor. Valve acceleration and
deceleration can be carried out in a controlled fashion and with
repeatability, so that the final end position of the valve is consistent. The
accommodation of vertical movement of the valve is also within the scope of
the present invention.

Abstract

Web stabilizer
particularly for one-sided flotation
of a running web. The device
includes two discharge slots which
allow for increased draw down
force, which flattens machine
direction wrinkles in a floating web.
There is a primary discharge slot
and a second discharge slot spaced
from and stepped down from the
primary discharge slot, a first web
support surface between the primary
discharge slot and the secondary
discharge slot, and a second web
support surface downstream of
the secondary discharge slot in the
direction of web travel. An integral
blower provides a supply of air
that is uniformly distributed to the
primary and secondary slots. Air
discharged from the primary slot
is gathered into the air stream of
the secondary slot and creates an
increased air cushion to provide
greater support to the web and
thereby remove machine direction
web wrinkles caused by higher
tension in light weight webs.

Abstract

Infrared air float bar for use in floating and
drying a continuous planar web of a material in a dryer.
Direct radiated or reflected infrared electromagnetic energy
from an infrared light source in a removable channel
assembly accelerates drying, or evaporation of solvents, or
curing of web material passing in proximity to the bar, either
by infrared electromagnetic energy, or in combination
with convention airflow. The infrared source is cooled by
pressurized air passing through an interior portion of the
removable air bar channel assembly, and the air is further
conducted into fluid contact with the web in an air gap between
the emitter and web to promote convective heat
transfer and to contribute to the air pressure field supporting
web flotation. The removable channel assembly is configured
for replacement of the infrared emitter and to allow
the setting of the pressurized cooling air flow to the
optimum level.
