Abstract

A surgical retractor includes a retractor frame, a plurality of blades for engaging tissue, and a coupling arrangement. Each blade of the plurality of blades defines a longitudinal blade axis. The coupling arrangement is carried by the retractor frame and releasably couples a first blade of the plurality of blades with the retractor frame through translation of the first blade in a direction generally perpendicular to the longitudinal blade axis of the first blade.

Abstract

The present teachings provide one or more surgical implements for repairing damaged tissue, such as in the case of a spinal fixation procedure. A cross connector system for use during a spinal fixation procedure is provided. The system includes at least one bridge defining a coupling bore and having a pair of downwardly extending arms for coupling to a first bone engaging member. The system includes a contoured bar having a first end offset from a second end, and a bore having a central axis. The system includes an expansion ring received within the bore, and a locking device received through the expansion ring and the coupling bore. The locking device is operable in a first state in which the contoured bar is movable about the central axis of the bore and in a second state in which the contoured bar fixed relative to the central axis of the bore.

Abstract

A drive train includes a torque multiplier assembly and a torque limiter device. An output of the torque multiplying assembly is drivingly coupled to an input of the torque limiter device. An input of the drive train is configured to be driven by a driver handle and an output of the drive train is configured to rotate a driver. A counter-torque connector that is configured to engage a spinal fixation construct is coupled to a counter-torque handle to prevent rotation of the spinal fixation construct. A coupling between a component of the torque multiplier assembly and the counter-torque handle prevents rotation of the component. Torque input by the single user through the driving handle is simultaneously multiplied by the torque multiplier assembly and limited by the torque limiter device, while the single user simultaneously prevents the spinal fixation construct from rotating through the counter-torque handle.

Abstract

Methods and devices for treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head with core decompression include a dowel adapted for placement into a core decompression channel of a femoral head. A cathode at the distal end of the dowel provides electrical stimulation of bone growth in the femoral head. A method of treating osteonecrosis of the femoral head involves placing a dowel having a cathode thereon into a core decompression channel of a femoral head in a state of osteonecrosis. Electrical current is supplied to the cathode for electrical stimulation of bone growth in the femoral head.

Abstract

An intervertebral implant for insertion between adjacent vertebral bodies is provided. The intervertebral implant can include a first component including a first articulating surface, which can be generally convex with a first radius of curvature. The first articulating surface can also define a stop element. The intervertebral implant can comprise a second component defining an aperture and including a second articulating surface. The second articulating surface can be generally concave and can have a second radius of curvature. The second articulating surface can be articulable with the first articulating surface for retaining motion between the first and second vertebra. A portion of the first articulating surface including the stop element can extend into the aperture and contacts a sidewall of the aperture to limit the range of articulation of the first component and the second component.

Abstract

The present teachings provide one or more surgical implements for repairing damaged tissue, such as through a fixation procedure. A system for a percutaneous procedure is provided. The system can include a bone fastener including a receiver. The system can include a device having a first end, a second end and a middle portion. The first end, middle portion and second end can be disposed along a longitudinal axis, and the second end can be connected to the receiver. The middle portion can have a pair of deformable leg members extending between the first and second ends. The leg members can define a channel having a width. The leg members can be selectively movable between a retracted state and an expanded state with the width of the channel greater in the expanded state than in the retracted state.

Abstract

The present teachings provide one or more surgical instruments for repairing damaged tissue, such as in the case of a vertebral compression fracture. The present teachings can provide a bone cement system. The system can include a housing, which can define at least a throughbore that can extend from a proximal end to a distal end of the housing. The system can also include a dispenser housing received in the throughbore of the housing that is adapted to receive a bone cement. The system can include a plunger, which can be releasably coupled to the proximal end of the housing and received into the dispenser housing so that movement of the plunger can dispense the bone cement. The system can also include a pressure release system, which can be coupled to the housing and can be movable to release pressure within the dispenser housing without moving the plunger.

Abstract

An orthopedic device can include an intramedullary nail (102) with a longitudinal bore, first and second bone fasteners (140) with sleeves (144) and a cannulated movable member (260) received within the longitudinal bore. The movable member defines first (164) and second (166) guiding bores for receiving respectively the first and second fasteners. Each of the first and second guiding bores includes a pair of opposing deformable elongated strips (800). Each pair of strips can engage the sleeve of a corresponding bone fastener.

Abstract

A bone plating system (10) has a plate (12) and a locking element (14). The plate has a bone screw aperture (24) defined by a sidewall including first and second substantially planar segments (40A, 40B). The locking element is coupled to the plate and at least partially positioned in the aperture. The locking element has an external geometry defining first and second substantially planar surfaces (6OA, 60B) and an internal geometry for receiving a head (46) of a bone fastener (16) and preventing the bone fastener from backing out of the plate. The locking element is expandable from a first state to a second state. In the first state the locking element is permitted to articulate relative to the plate. In the second state the first and second substantially planar surfaces of the locking element engage the first and second substantially planar segments of the aperture sidewall, respectively, to prevent relative movement between the locking element and the plate.

Abstract

A pulsed electromagnetic field method of treating a soft tissue wound, wherein, in one embodiment, a patient in need of treatment for a soft tissue wound is administered a pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) having repetitive pulse bursts less than approximately 30 ms in duration, with a pulse burst repetition rate greater than approximately 5 Hz, the pulse bursts generated with a drive signal including pulses each having a first-polarity portion with a pulse width less than 1 ms and a second-polarity portion with a shorter pulse width, the electromagnetic field having a maximum amplitude less than approximately 4 mT and rising to its maximum amplitude during the first-polarity portion. According to another aspect of the invention, a soft tissue wound is treated by administering a pulsed electromagnetic field having substantially unipolar magnetic field pulses generated with a drive signal including a series of pulses each having a first-polarity portion with a pulse width less than 1 ms and a second-polarity portion with a longer pulse width, the electromagnetic field having a maximum amplitude less than 4 mT and rising to its maximum amplitude during the first-polarity portion.
