Abstract

An agricultural tractor comprises an engine and a cooling package supported in front of a cab. The cooling package comprises a radiator and fan disposed between the engine and cab, the radiator having a major surface which is aligned longitudinally so that an airflow forced through the radiator by the fan is generally transverse with respect to the tractor's forward direction of travel. The orientation of the radiator provides for a narrower front end installation which improves the driver's field of view and relaxes limitations on steering angles and cooling package size.

Abstract

A door latch mechanism (10) comprises a pin (11) having an elongate axis, and releasable jaw means (12) comprising a pair of jaw elements (18) which engage the pin therebetween to latch a door (16) in a closed position to a door frame (14). The pin is mounted on the door or the door frame with biasing means, such as a pair of springs, so as to allow the pin to move substantially linearly in a direction perpendicular to the elongate axis of the pin and substantially parallel to the plane of the door when in the closed position. The movement of the pin (11) allowed by the biasing means caters for any vertical displacement of the door caused by worn hinges for example without any forced distortion of the door. The invention is of particular benefit to doors having no frame and which are susceptible to flexing and come with the associated risk of structural failure.

Abstract

A tractor power take-off drive line having an output shaft (11) with a socket (12) within which a removeable PTO stub shaft (13) is drivingly received. The stub shaft is retained in the socket by radially moveable retaining members (16) housed in the output shaft and moveable between a radially inward retaining position in which the retaining members each projecting into the socket (12) to engage a retaining formation (18) in the stub shaft (13) within the socket and a radially outward releasing position in which the retaining members are free to move radially outwardly relative to the socket to disengage the retaining formation and allow the stub-shaft to be removed from the socket. The retaining members (16) are moved between their retaining and releasing positions by an actuating sleeve (19, 29) which is axially slidable on the output shaft (11) by a tractor operator between a first retaining position in which a first stub shaft designed to be driven at a first output speed is retained in position in the socket, a second retaining position in which a second stub shaft designed to be driven at a second output speed is retained in position in the socket, and a third releasing position in which the retaining members are allowed to move to their releasing positions. The sleeve (19, 29) carries first and second PTO shaft speed indicating formations which are respectively designed to be aligned with a speed sensor (32) when the sleeve is in its first and second stub shaft retaining positions respectively.

Abstract

A catalytic converter module (16) houses two catalyst units (26,36) which are geometrically arranged in a serial manner. An exhaust gas stream (X) is processed in two parallel sub- streams which follow respective paths: a first path (A) which passes through the first catalyst unit (26) and bypasses the second catalyst unit (36), and a second path (B) which bypasses the first catalyst unit (26) and passes through the second catalyst unit (36). This enables exploitation of a catalyst having an effective area larger than that of the module housing 17 thus allowing the module (16) to be incorporated conveniently into available volumes whilst maintaining a low back pressure.

Abstract

A tractor implement support linkage has a pair of implement attachment links (11), each link being provided at its outer end with an implement attachment means (12) and being pivoted (13) at its inner end on a first arm (14). The first arm is pivoted ( 15) at its inner end on a support frame (16), the outer end (14a) of each first arm being moveable by a lift means (18) for raising and lowering the first arm about its inner pivot (15) on the support frame (16). Each link (11) is also connected (20) with a second arm (21) which is pivoted at its inner end (22) on the support frame (16) and is pivotally connected at its outer end (20) with the link (11). The second arm (21) rotates the link (11) about its connection (13) with the first arm (14) as the first arm is rotated about its pivot (15) on the support frame (16) by the lift means (18) thus increasing the pivotal movement of the implement attachment means (12) relative to the support frame (16) for a given movement of the lift means ( 18).

Abstract

A telescopic boom (10) suitable for a material handling vehicle is provided. The boom comprises two telescopic sections. One end (12a) of an inner tube element (12) is telescopically slideable in one end (14a) of an outer tube element (14) so that a majority length of the inner tube element can be received therein. An intermediate element (16) is also provided, a first end (16a) of which resides within, and is slideable in, the outer tube element (14). A second end (16b) of the intermediate element is telescopically slideable in the end (12a) of the inner tube element (12) that resides inside the outer tube element. A first stop (20) serves to limit withdrawal of the first end (16a) of the intermediate element from the outer tube element (14), whilst a second stop (18) serves to limit withdrawal of the second end (16b) of the intermediate element from the inner tube element (12). The provision of the intermediate element (16) allows a reduced overlap between the telescopic sections (12,14) thus increased reach.

Abstract

An air intake system (20) for a utility vehicle engine (16) is provided. The system comprises an air filter module (21) having a pre-filter (22) upstream of a main filter (24) wherein the pre-filter serves to extract dust from the air stream. The system further comprises a fan module (32) which is dedicated to deliver a scavenging vacuum which sucks said dust through a scavenger vent (28) in the pre-filter. The fan module (34) is secured to the air filter module (21). By providing a dedicated fan for extracting the dust from the system the reliance on the engine exhaust to provide the vacuum is removed. Furthermore, the securing of the fan module to the air filter module reduces the number of components on the vehicle assembly line.

Abstract

A method of controlling a fan for cooling a condenser in an air conditioning system is provided. A compressor serves to drive a refrigerant around a fluid circuit which includes the condenser. The duty cycle of the compressor is measured over a period of time to determine a utilisation ratio which reflects the demand on the air conditioning system at that time. The fan is driven at a speed which is no lower than a minimum fan speed which is associated with the calculated utilisation ratio and ambient temperature. Therefore, the demand on the system is determined and exploited without any additional pressure sensors.

Abstract

A tractor power take-off drive line having an output shaft (11) with a socket (12) within which a removeable PTO stub shaft (13) is drivingly received. The stub shaft is retained in the socket by radially moveable retaining members (16) housed in the output shaft and moveable between a radially inward retaining position in which the retaining members each projecting into the socket (12) to engage a retaining formation (18) in the stub shaft (13) within the socket and a radially outward releasing position in which the retaining members are free to move radially outwardly relative to the socket to disengage the retaining formation and allow the stub shaft to be removed from the socket.

Abstract

A tractor cab suspension for suspending a tractor cab (10) from an associated chassis (11) is provided. Each corner of the cab (10) is supported by fluid damper/spring unit (12, 13). The damper/spring unit (12) at each of the two front corners of the cab is connected with the chassis via a link (14) of a fixed length and which extends generally transverse relative to the chassis (11). The link (14) is pivoted at one end (14b) on the chassis and at the other end (14a) on the cab about axes which extend generally longitudinal relative to the chassis. This connection allows generally vertical movement (X) of the cab relative to the chassis but resists transverse movement of the cab relative to the chassis. A roll bar (41) acting between the cab and chassis is provided to control roll of the cab relative to the chassis.

Abstract

Mounting apparatus (10) for mounting a cab (12) to a chassis (14) on a utility vehicle at one of a plurality of mounting points. The mounting apparatus comprise a first member (15) being associated with the cab and a second member (16) being associated with the chassis. The members (15, 16) each have a mutually cooperating major surface which supports a portion of the weight of the cab (12). The weight is supported over a majority of the major surface thus avoiding localised stresses. The members further include engagement means (25, 16) disposed on their major surfaces which can be engaged to restrict relative movement in a plane substantially parallel to the major surfaces. The members can be attached to the chassis (14) and the cab (12) at an early stage in the assembly, thereby allowing a saving in time and thus assembly costs.

Abstract

A variable speed fan drive (10) particularly suitable for a vehicle having an internal combustion engine is provided. The fan drive comprises an input shaft (11) driven by the output of an engine. The input drives a carrier (12) for planetary gears (13) which each orbit a sun gear (14) in an epicyclic gear arrangement. A fan (16) is coupled to the sun gear. A further gear arrangement (18,19,21), driven by the input shaft, delivers a variable output to input ratio, the output of which is coupled to a housing (17) of the epicyclic gear arrangement which is meshed with the planetary gears. The provision of the epicyclic gear arrangement in combination with the variable ratio allows the fan blade to operate in reverse. Advantageously, this can be exploited to provide a means to clean a radiator grille.

Abstract

In summary, there is provided a front axle mounting assembly (100) which is suitable for a tractor or a construction vehicle for example. The assembly comprises a steerable front axle (130), which is typically the front axle on a tractor, and a pair of support arms (120) which extend forwardly from the main body of the vehicle. The arms are pivotally mounted to the body of the vehicle, for example, at the front of the chassis, at transversely spaced mounting points (121). The other ends of the arms (120) are pivotally attached to, and maintained at a fixed spacing, by a crosslink member (124). The axle (130) is mounted to the crosslink member (124) so as to be parallel thereto when viewed from above. By mounting the axle (130) on two support arms (120) instead of one, the effective radius of pivot of the axle is significantly increased, thereby allowing the axle to move sideways to a greater extent for a given angular displacement.

Abstract

A control system for an implement (10) mounted on a tractor (11) via a three point linkage (10) and which has one or more depth control wheels (13) which contact the ground and which support at least part of the weight of the implement. The three point linkage has an upper link (17) and two lower links ( 14, 15), the upper link including an adjusting means such as an hydraulic cylinder (18) to vary its effective length and the lower links being provided with raising means (16) to raise the implement. The control system has a control unit (23) which received signals indicative of the level of slippage of one or more wheels of the tractor and which in response to a wheel slippage level above a first level (X) operates the adjusting means (18) to shorten the effective length of the upper link (17) to transfer some of the weight of the implement (10) onto the tractor to reduce wheel slippage. The control unit (23) also operates the lower link raising means (16) to raise the lower links (14,15) and hence the implement, if the wheel slippage level exceeds a second higher level (Z).
