Abstract

Example embodiments disclosed herein relate to optimizing operation of an electronically steerable antenna (ESA) with respect to temperature-related constraints. Thermal load experienced by individual antenna elements or tiles of the ESA is balanced to maximize an expected time before the ESA reaches a shutdown temperature. An example method includes determining a reduced number of antenna tiles that minimally satisfies a signal quality requirement with respect to a target system. The method further includes selecting an optimized sequence of tile patterns of the reduced number of antenna tiles within the ESA. The optimized sequence corresponds to an optimized path that traverses a graph having nodes corresponding to the tile patterns and edges defining a count of shared tiles between respective tile patterns. The method further includes operating the ESA according to the optimized sequence of tile patterns based on activating specific tiles identified by each pattern in a sequential manner.

Abstract

Vehicle entertainment systems can determine an entertainment preference of a passenger based on the interactions of the passenger with media devices on board the vehicle. The interactions can include how the passenger rates content, whether the passenger views the entirety of the content, or information regarding the passenger such as frequent flier data. The analysis to determine the preferences of the passenger are done without placing cookies on the passenger's devices and by components on board the vehicle. The analysis can include machine learning techniques that build trained models of passenger preferences. Additionally, the trained models can develop profiles for each passenger. At the end of the travel experience, the preferences of a passenger can be deleted such that a new passenger does not see content that was based on the prior passenger's preferences.

Abstract

Systems and methods for obtaining data for Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) events caused by interfering signals, such as radar signals, in mobile WiFi wireless communication networks on airplanes. The systems and methods utilize wireless access points (WAPs) on in-flight entertainment systems on airplanes to detect DFS events, and obtain DFS event data. The DFS event data is transmitted to a ground system which is configured to utilize the DFS event data to generate DFS messages which allow a WAP on another airplane to avoid the interfering signals that caused the DFS event. The ground system transmits the DFS messages to other airplanes which use the information in the DFS message to configure a WAP to avoid DFS events. The ground system may also be configured to analyze and generate a 3D DFS map which can be used to generate radio channel plans to avoid DFS events.

Abstract

A system for managing media content data sets loaded onto a content server has a media content repository storing media content data items. A usage data aggregator retrieves usage log data from each passenger terminal device of the vehicle entertainment system. A load set generator builds a ranked media content data set based upon prioritization scores assigned to each of the media content data items with adaptive inferences from the usage log data. The prioritization scores are correlated with trip factors established for a subsequent vehicle trip for which the ranked media content data set is being built. A content retriever transfers the one or more media content data items specified in the ranked media content data from the media content repository.

Abstract

Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for automated detection of relative position among a plurality of wireless access points (WAPs) deployed in service area. An exemplary service area is the passenger cabin of a commercial airplane. The method can include transmitting a signal on a wireless channel at a fixed power level across the service area. Each WAP can measure a signal strength of the signal received from all other WAPs of the plurality of WAPs. The plurality of WAPs can share reports including signal strengths of the signal transmitted from all of the other WAPs. Each WAP can then form a matrix of measured signal strengths and measuring WAPs including the signal strength of signals transmitted by each WAP as received by all other WAPs as the measuring WAPs. The matrix can be used to determine a relative position of the plurality of WAPs based on the first matrix.

Abstract

Disclosed embodiments are directed at devices, methods, and systems for rendering a customizable 3D virtual environment of an outside world surrounding an airplane. The 3D virtual environment is rendered on a personal electronic device (e.g., a VR headset) and is composed from high-resolution image data received from a plurality of cameras mounted externally to the airplane. A seatback computer coupled to the personal electronic device receives data corresponding to the 3D virtual environment of the outside world from the airplane's compute server, which performs the tasks of analyzing the high-resolution image data to compose the 3D virtual environment. Further, the 3D virtual environment can be customized to a passenger's preferences based on gesture-based interactions of a passenger with the 3D virtual environment. The gesture-based interactions of a passenger are received by a sensor coupled to the personal electronic device.
