The present disclosure provides a multi stage activated sludge system for biological wastewater treatment, having improved sludge settling properties, the multi stage activated sludge system comprising: an MABR tank comprising an MABR module, an MABR tank aeration unit configured for periodically aerating mixed liquor within the MABR tank, and an outlet from the MABR tank configured for selectively discharging partially settled sludge from the MABR tank, thus selecting for faster settling sludge.

A system for treatment of ammonia in a feed water stream containing ammonia, the system comprising: an ion exchanger unit comprising: a feed inlet configured to receive the feed water stream; an ion exchanger bed configured to exchange the ammonia in the feed water stream and to provide thereby a treated effluent; and a treated effluent outlet configured to discharge the treated effluent from the ion exchanger unit; and a regeneration unit in fluid communication with the ion exchanger unit and configured to provide a regeneration brine for regenerating the ion exchanger bed, said regeneration unit comprising a Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) for recovery of the regeneration brine.

A wastewater treatment method comprising splitting wastewater influent into a first influent stream and second influent stream; subjecting the first influent stream to treatment within at least one membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) to provide a MABR effluent; subjecting the second influent stream and said MABR effluent to treatment within an anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) reactor to obtain treated water effluent; and discharging from said Anammox reactor said treated water effluent. Also provided is a wastewater treatment system comprising at least one membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) module; an anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) reactor comprising at least one inlet and an outlet for discharging treated water effluent; and a wastewater influent arrangement configured for splitting a wastewater influent to a first influent stream and a second influent stream and for supplying said first influent stream to said MABR module and said second influent stream to said Anammox reactor.

Also provided is a biological wastewater treatment system including wastewater inlet, and (i) an anaerobic digester (AD) comprising biogas outlet, and effluent outlet; and (ii) at least one microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) including an anode and a cathode; said AD and said at least one MEC being in liquid communication through liquid circulation lines configured for at least circulating wastewater between said AD and said at least one MEC.

The present disclosure provides a water treatment module, a bioreactor comprising one or more of such modules and a receptive water treatment system. Also provided herein is a method making use of the above module, bioreactor and system. The water treatment module comprises (i) at least one elongated gas enclosure comprising a gas inlet and two vertical walls, at least one vertical wall comprising a water-impermeable and gas-permeable membrane having a water-facing side and a gas-facing side, the two vertical walls separating between water external to the enclosure and gas within the enclosure, the gas enclosure being in a rolled or folded configuration to thereby define a convoluted horizontal path and one or more water-treatment spaces formed between opposite water facing sides of the enclosure; and (ii) a diffuser arrangement comprising gas diffusers configured for introducing a stream of gas into the one or more water treatment spaces.

Provided is a water treatment module including a bundle of hollow fiber membranes that includes a treatment portion extending between bottom and top ends and at least one gas diffuser. The membranes may be gas permeable and water impermeable. At least one end of the hollow fiber membranes is linked to a source of biofilm growth-supporting gas (BGSG) and configured to permit inlet of said BGSG into the hollow fiber membranes. Abstract
The present disclosure provides a method for treating a natural water body for removal of pollutants, comprising (i) submerging one or more water treatment units having a water-tight enclosure that comprises an oxygen-permeable, water impermeable membrane for releasing oxygen into the water by permeation therethrough; (ii) fixing the one or more water treatment units within the water body in a manner to permit polluted portions of the water body to come into contact with said one or more units; and (iii) feeding oxygen-containing gas into the enclosure of said one or more units. Also provided by the present disclosure is a system for treating a polluted natural water body, comprising (i) one or more water treatment units each having a water-tight enclosure that comprises an oxygen-permeable, water impermeable membrane for releasing oxygen into the surrounding medium by permeation therethrough; (ii) a fixing arrangement for fixing said units within the water body such that the unit is fully submerged therein; (iii) at least one gas inlet in said unit configured for receiving an oxygen-containing gas; and (iv) at least one gas outlet.
