Abstract

A device and method of reclaiming refractory material from a lining of a refractory includes assembling a first refractory component of the lining with a first refractory product, and assembling a second refractory component of the working lining with a second refractory product different from the first refractory product, the second refractory product including magnetic material dispersed therein. Upon the lining reaching a service life, the lining is demolished to produce a mixture of the first refractory component pieces and the second refractory component pieces. Magnetic separation is performed on the mixture to separate the second refractory component pieces from the first refractory component pieces.

Abstract

A refractory material for forming a refractory product includes a refractory component and a taggant having an amorphous or a crystalline solid dispersed within the refractory material. The taggant is configured to be distinguishable from the refractory component after heating of the refractory product between 300 degrees F. and 3500 degrees F. A method of reclaiming refractory material of a refractory lining constructed from different types of refractory products, the refractory lining having been subjected to temperatures in excess of 300 degrees F., includes demolishing the refractory lining to produce a mixture of refractory pieces of different types of refractory products. The mixture of refractory pieces is analyzed to detect the presence of one or more taggants, and the refractory pieces are sorted into groups based on the detected one or more taggants.

Abstract

A liquid phenolic resin composition for use as a binder for a refractory article, the phenolic resin composition comprising a phenol formaldehyde resin, wherein the phenolic resin composition has a reduced vaporization percentage of phenolic compounds. The phenolic resin composition is used in refractory compositions comprising at least 50 wt.% of one or more refractory aggregate(s), based on a total weight of the refractory composition. There is also disclosed a refractory article, such as a brick, formed into a shape comprising said refractory composition and heating until the phenolic resin composition is at least 20% cured and having a green strength after curing at 170 °C for 5 hours sufficient for handling the solid without falling apart. The bricks can be used to make inner liners of ladles which can transport and pour molten metals.

Abstract

A metallurgical vessel structure and method is provided for producing low-impurity Magnesia-Carbon reclaimed aggregate suitable for reuse in the production of high purity Magnesia-Carbon refractory. A metallurgical vessel is assembled with a non-reactive or chemically similar backup lining. The entire height of the working lining wall is Magnesia- Carbon brick suitable for reuse. The working lining is exposed to a metal making high temperature process, and the working lining is sequentially demolished. Due to the assembly of vessel, metallurgical practice, and ease of demolishing the vessel, there is little to no need for sorting, such that the used Magnesia-Carbon brick are easily converted into low impurity Magnesia-Carbon reclaimed aggregate. A refractory composed of low-impurity Magnesia aggregate reclaimed from the method is also contemplated.
