Enzymatic pre-treatment of market pulp to improve fiber drainage and physical properties
Methods for reducing the effects of wetlapping, drying, and hornification of pulp fibers and consequently increasing the pulp drainage and strength properties in the final product (i.e., paper) are provided. The method which has been developed creates a “value-added” product by the wastepaper supplier or at the pulp and/or deinking (recycled paper) mill—a wastepaper load/bale, wet pulp stock or wet lap, or dried pulp treated with or impregnated with enzymes that enhance the quality of the pulp or paper product when it is repulped and processed at the paper mill.

Compositions comprising enzyme compositions are provided. Also provided are methods of treating virgin fiber and recycled wastepaper containing mineral oils using the compositions comprising enzyme compositions. The mineral oils generally originate from wastepapers with mineral oil based inks and certain other hydrocarbon-based chemistries used during the manufacturing, paperboard converting, and packaging process. The enzymes break down or modify mineral oils present in the fiber and paper, mobilize and liberate them from the fibers, and increase removal of mineral oils during paper recycling, pulping and papermaking processes. The method results in the break down or modification of mineral oil components in wastepaper, recycled pulp, and paper products by the enzyme compositions so that the mineral oils can be more efficiently detached and removed. The resulting pulp and paper has much reduced mineral oil concentration or less problematic forms of mineral oils and is beneficial for making food packaging paper products.

Methods for the modification of pulp fibers, such as recycled and/or virgin fibers, to increase the pulp drainage and/or strength and/or increase the rate of water absorption of resulting handsheets and/or paper products are described herein. The methods involve treating pulp with expansin and/or swollenin in combination with an enzyme composition containing one or more hemicellulases, one or more pectinases, and combinations thereof. In one embodiment, the enzyme composition further contains one or more cellulases, for example, one or more endo-glucanases. The expansin and/or swollenin can be applied simultaneously with the enzyme composition in the same formulation or different formulations.

Methods are provided for determining the surface fatty acid content in a wood pulp or Whitewater sample. The methods comprise reacting free fatty acids which are present on the surface of the wood pulp fibers in the sample or in the Whitewater with one or more reagents to form a measurable species, and determining the fatty acid content from the quantitative measurement of the measurable species. The method is useful as a quick, portable, accurate and low cost assay for assessing the fatty acid content present at various sample points in pulp and paper mills. The method for determining the free fatty acid content can be conducted in a batch process (e.g., where samples are collected periodically and the test is conducted offline). Alternatively, the method for determining the free fatty acid content can be conducted in a continuous or semi-continuous process (e.g., online sampling/analysis).

A method of treating wood chips or saw dust with an enzyme formulation, prior to refining, in order to reduce the total extractives content of the wood chips or sawdust and to modify the wood structure is described herein. The wood chips or sawdust are treated with one or more enzymes such as lipases, esterases, pectinases, cellulases, laccases, hemicellulases and combinations thereof. The enzyme formulation can be applied to the surface of the wood chips or sawdust, e.g. by spraying, or can be impregnated into the wood chips. The enzyme formulation can further comprise one or more surface active agents which can enhance the effectiveness of the enzyme treatment by improving the diffusion or impregnation of the enzymes into the wood chips. The enzyme-based treatment can be applied at any of several different locations prior to the pulping process including chip piles, chip conveyors, chip silos, chips washers, chip washer water stream, impregnation liquor, or during chip storage. The enzyme-based treatment is quick and easy to apply in most commercial mill operations. The enzyme-based treatment is effective at temperatures from about 20°C to about 100°C, preferably from about 35°C to about 70°C. The wood chips or saw dust can be treated for a period of time from about 0.10 to about 200 hours, more preferably from about 10 to about 72 hours. The addition of the enzyme formulation into the wood chip or sawdust pile increases the concentration of pitch-degrading enzymes on the chip or dust surfaces which can significantly accelerate the degradation of pitch components inside the chips or sawdust. Decreasing the total extractives content of the wood chips and modifying the structure of the wood chips or sawdust leads to a decrease in the apparent pitch content during pulping and in reduced energy requirements, increased paper strength, improved paper machine runability, and lower costs associated with paper manufacturing.
