Abstract

A process for preparing synthetic hydrocarbons from a biomass feedstock is provided. The process involves electrolysis of steam and/or CO2, optionally along with a refinery gas in a high temperature co-electrolyzer (HTCE) to produce oxygen and hydrogen and/or enhanced hydrogen rich syngas. The oxygen generated via the electrolysis process is used for partial oxidation of a biomass feedstock in a gasifier to generate a hydrogen lean syngas. The hydrogen lean syngas is mixed with at least a portion of the hydrogen and/or enhanced hydrogen rich syngas generated via the high temperature electrolysis/co-electrolysis to formulate a hydrogen rich syngas. The hydrogen rich syngas is then reacted in a Fischer Tropsch (FT) reactor to produce synthetic hydrocarbons and refinery gas.

Processes for preparing synthetic hydrocarbons are disclosed herein. An aspect of the process comprises: electrolyzing a feed stream comprising steam and CO2 with a H2O/CO2 (S/C) molar ratio greater than about 2.0 in a high-temperature co-electrolyzer apparatus operating at a co- electrolyzer temperature to produce an enhanced hydrogen rich syngas having a first concentration of H2, removing at least a portion of H2 from the enhanced hydrogen rich syngas to provide a hydrogen rich syngas having a second concentration of H2 that is lower than the first concentration of H2, and producing at least an FT product stream that comprises synthetic hydrocarbons by reacting the hydrogen rich syngas in a Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactor. Processes for reducing methane and soot content during production of an enhanced hydrogen rich syngas are also disclosed.

Abstract

A process for enhancing production of synthetic biofuels from biomass feedstock is provided. The process involves generating a hydrogen lean syngas by gasifying a biomass and reacting the syngas in a FT reactor to produce FT vapours and FT liquids. The FT vapours are separated from the FT liquids and divided into a FT recycle stream and a tail gas stream. The tail gas stream is compressed to form a high pressure tail gas stream for reforming to generate a hydrogen rich syngas gas stream to be mixed with the hydrogen lean syngas stream, and the liquid hydrocarbons are upgraded to obtain the biofuel(s). The process further comprises removing at least a portion of the CO2 from the tail gas stream to form a modified tail gas stream, which is compressed before reforming, and/or from the hydrogen rich syngas prior to adding same the hydrogen lean syngas feed stream.

Abstract

A continuous multi-stage vertically sequenced gasification process for conversion of solid carbonaceous fuel material into clean (low tar) syngas. The process involves forming a pyrolysis residue bed having a uniform depth and width to pass raw syngas there through for an endothermic reaction, while controlling the reduction zone pressure drop, resident time and syngas flow space velocity during the endothermic reaction to form substantially tar free syngas, to reduce carbon content in the pyrolysis residue, and to reduce the temperature of raw syngas as compared to the temperature of the partial oxidation zone.

A process for upgrading or refining heavy oil or bitumen to produce valuable synthesized hydrocarbon products along with the production of commercially valuable co-products such as methanol, ammonia and urea from by-products of the upgrading process, involving generating a hydrogen lean stream and a first hydrogen rich syngas stream, formation of a purified hydrogen byproduct stream and second hydrogen rich syngas stream from the first hydrogen rich syngas stream; combining at least a portion of any or both of the first and the second hydrogen rich syngas streams with hydrogen lean stream to form an optimum stream for FT reaction to formulate synthesized hydrocarbons, also subjecting at least a portion of the hydrogen lean, first and the second hydrogen rich syngas streams to CO2 removal to obtain one or more CO2 byproduct streams; and converting the purified hydrogen by-product and CO2 byproduct streams into commercially valuable products.

Abstract

An enhanced Fischer-Tropsch process for the synthesis of sulfur free, clean burning, green hydrocarbon fuels, examples of which include syndiesel and aviation fuel. Naphtha is destroyed in a hydrogen generator and recycled as feedstock to a syngas (FT) reactor in order to enhance the production of syndiesel from the reactor. A further variation integrates a second hydrogen generator capturing light hydrocarbon gas for conversion to hydrogen and carbon monoxide which supplements the Fischer-Tropsch reactor. The result is a considerable increase in the volume of syndiesel formulated. A system for effecting the process is also characterized in the specification.

Abstract

A bitumen and heavy oil upgrading process and system is disclosed for the synthesis of hydrocarbons, an example of which is synthetic crude oil (SCO). The process advantageously avoids the waste attributed to residuum and/or petcoke formation which has a dramatic effect on the yield of hydrocarbon material generated. The process integrates Fischer-Tropsch technology with gasification and hydrogen rich gas stream generation. The hydrogen rich gas generation is conveniently effected using singly or in combination a hydrogen source, a hydrogen rich vapor from hydroprocessing and the Fischer-Tropsch process, a steam methane reformer (SMR) and autothermal reformer (ATR) or a combination of SMR/ATR. The feedstock for upgrading is distilled and the bottoms fraction is gasified and converted in a Fischer-Tropsch reactor. A resultant hydrogen lean syngas is then exposed to the hydrogen rich gas stream to optimize the formation of, for example, the synthetic crude oil.

Abstract

An enhanced Fischer-Tropsch process for the synthesis of sulfur free, clean burning, hydrocarbon fuels, examples of which include syndiesel and aviation fuel. Naphtha is destroyed in a syngas generator and recycled as feedstock to an Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactor in order to enhance the production of syndiesel from the reactor. The process enhancement results is the maximum production of formulated syndiesel without the formation of low value by-products.

The hydrogen lean gas stream may also be effected by a water gas shift reaction, singly or in combination or in addition with the hydrogen rich gas stream generation. A system for effecting the process is also characterized in the specification.
