Abstract
Processes for preparing synthetic hydrocarbons are disclosed herein. An aspect of the process comprises: electrolyzing a feed stream comprising steam and CO2 with a H2O/CO2 (S/C) molar ratio greater than about 2.0 in a high-temperature co-electrolyzer apparatus operating at a co- electrolyzer temperature to produce an enhanced hydrogen rich syngas having a first concentration of H2, removing at least a portion of H2 from the enhanced hydrogen rich syngas to provide a hydrogen rich syngas having a second concentration of H2 that is lower than the first concentration of H2, and producing at least an FT product stream that comprises synthetic hydrocarbons by reacting the hydrogen rich syngas in a Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactor. Processes for reducing methane and soot content during production of an enhanced hydrogen rich syngas are also disclosed.

A process for enhancing production of synthetic biofuels from biomass feedstock is provided. The process involves generating a hydrogen lean syngas by gasifying a biomass and reacting the syngas in a FT reactor to produce FT vapours and FT liquids. The FT vapours are separated from the FT liquids and divided into a FT recycle stream and a tail gas stream. The tail gas stream is compressed to form a high pressure tail gas stream for reforming to generate a hydrogen rich syngas gas stream to be mixed with the hydrogen lean syngas stream, and the liquid hydrocarbons are upgraded to obtain the biofuel(s). The process further comprises removing at least a portion of the CO2 from the tail gas stream to form a modified tail gas stream, which is compressed before reforming, and/or from the hydrogen rich syngas prior to adding same the hydrogen lean syngas feed stream.

A bitumen and heavy oil upgrading process and system is disclosed for the synthesis of hydrocarbons, an example of which is synthetic crude oil (SCO). The process advantageously avoids the waste attributed to residuum and/or petcoke formation which has a dramatic effect on the yield of hydrocarbon material generated. The process integrates Fischer-Tropsch technology with gasification and hydrogen rich gas stream generation. The hydrogen rich gas generation is conveniently effected using singly or in combination a hydrogen source, a hydrogen rich vapor from hydroprocessing and the Fischer-Tropsch process, a steam methane reformer (SMR) and autothermal reformer (ATR) or a combination of SMR/ATR. The feedstock for upgrading is distilled and the bottoms fraction is gasified and converted in a Fischer-Tropsch reactor. A resultant hydrogen lean syngas is then exposed to the hydrogen rich gas stream to optimize the formation of, for example, the synthetic crude oil.

The hydrogen rich gas generation is conveniently effected using singly or in combination a hydrogen source, a hydrogen rich vapour from hydroprocessing and the Fischer-Tropsch process, a steam methane reformer (SMR) and autothermal reformer (ATR) or a combination of SMR/ATR. The hydrogen lean gas stream may also be effected by a water gas shift reaction, singly or in combination or in addition with the hydrogen rich gas stream generation. A system for effecting the processes is also characterized in the specification. Refinery processes are additionally set forth incorporating the modifications in numerous variations to produce high value refinery products such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.
