Abstract

A process for recovering alkali from power boiler ash is provided. The power boiler ash is first contacted with Na2CO3 to produce a mixture containing settling and non-settling solid particles. A fraction of the settling particles is then separated from the mixture to produce a first clarified alkaline solution. The first clarified alkaline solution contains species such as NaOH and KOH depending upon the power boiler ash characteristics. The non-settling solid particles may optionally be further separated from the first clarified alkaline solution to obtain a second clarified alkaline solution. This process is also applicable for the extraction of alkali from other oxide/hydroxide containing materials.

It is provided a microspherical structure comprising an external shell of structured cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and at least one polymer, and a core, wherein the core can be hollow or filled with an immiscible medium. It is also provided a method for producing the same comprising spray-drying the mixture of CNCs and polymer through an atomizer and into a drying chamber forming droplets, wherein the solvent used to suspend the CNCs is evaporated and the microspherical structures are formed. Abstract

The present disclosure generally relates to a scalable, green process for producing non-toxic, all-cellulose super absorbent hydrogels that form instantly after cross-linking. A super absorbent hydrogel can be produced by physical mixing of water-soluble carboxyalkyl polysaccharides such carboxymethyl cellulose and negatively-charged cellulose nanocrystals resulting in instantaneous gelation. Cellulose nanocrystals act as effective cross-linkers when physically mixed with carboxymethyl cellulose in an aqueous medium. The resulting hydrogel possesses excellent absorption properties, and has applications in a wide range of products from hygiene products to medical and industrial super absorbent products.

Abstract

The present invention is directed to a method of transforming a pulp fibrous into a pre-dispersed semi-dry or dry fibrous material and to the material produced. The method opens, de-entangles and fibrillates the fibrous material of the input pulp. The method mixes the input fibrous with chemicals while evaporating moisture in an updated mechanical disc refiner process. The refiner operates to set three process variables: 1) applied refining specific energy; 2) refiner gap opening and 3) refiner output consistency. Depending on the feed pulp type and consistency, the refiner's output is a pre-dispersed semi-dry fibrous material of 30 to 99% solids with 70 to 100% of separated fibers that depending on chemical treatment are loosely entangled fibrous that disperse in water using common techniques. The pre-dispersed semi-dry output may be further processed inline or by batch process air agitation at velocities sufficient to further separate fibers and loosen fibrous entanglements.

Abstract

The present provides a concrete and mortar mix and composition thereof with poor quality sand such as desert sand, hydraulic binder (cement) and filamentous cellulose, where the desert sand/spherical sand replaces conventional concrete river sands. The present disclosure also relates a filamentous cellulose, such as, cellulose filaments (CF), cellulose nano filaments, cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) as a concrete/mortar and sand adhesion additive with hydraulic binder (cement), and to a method of making the concrete. Abstract

A water-based process was developed for the synthesis of aminated lignin copolymers with high MW, thermal stability and solubility in water over a wide range of p H values. The cationic lignin copolymer described herein comprises: a grafting ratio of (weight of cationic amine compound)/(weight of lignin) of 70 to 200% and a charge density of +1.4-3.0 meq/g. This cationic lignin copolymer can be used as a flocculant in numerous wastewater streams including municipal and industrial systems and sludge dewatering in the pulp & paper, mining and oil industries.

It is provided an emulsion stabilized by cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and methods for producing the emulsion, controlling and/or tuning the rheological properties of the emulsion. Accordingly, it is demonstrated herein that emulsions stabilized by cellulose nanocrystals have tunable flow, or rheological, properties when subjected to external load, as well as long-term storage stability. That is to say, these emulsions can be solid under no load, but flow only when modulated pressure or load is externally applied. Abstract

23 3 to produce a mixture containing settling and non-settling solid particles. A fraction of the settling particles is then separated from the mixture to produce a first clarified alkaline solution. The first clarified alkaline solution contains species such as NaOH and KOH depending upon the power boiler ash characteristics. The non-settling solid particles may optionally be further separated from the first clarified alkaline solution to obtain a second clarified alkaline solution. This process is also applicable for the extraction of alkali from other oxide/hydroxide containing materials.

The present invention relates to a method of producing furfural and extracting lignin from a hemi-cellulosic biomass solution comprising a total quantity of C5 sugars, comprising the steps of heating the hemi-cellulosic biomass solution to a temperature of at least about 200° C.; acidifying the hemi-cellulosic biomass solution with acid to produce the furfural in vapor phase; and condensing the furfural to recover furfural in solution, wherein the furfural is produced at a total molar yield of at least 70% of moles of furfural produced/the total moles C5 sugars present in the initial hemi-cellulosic biomass solution. Low molecular weight lignin can also be recovered from the hemi-cellulosic biomass solution prior to furfural production by membrane concentration, acidification, coagulation and filtration.

Abstract

The present relates to a process for the depolymerization of lignin using chemicals recoverable by the soda or kraft mill recovery cycles. The process involves the use of sodium hydroxide or white liquor to depolymerize lignin in black liquor or other lignins (e.g. hydrolysis lignin, kraft lignin) by conducting the reaction at 170-250° C. for up to 3 hours in the presence or absence of a co-solvent and a capping agent. The depolymerized lignin is then obtained by acidifying the reaction products to a low pH to precipitate the de-polymerized lignin, followed by particle coagulation, cake filtration and washing with acid and water to obtain a purified depolymerized lignin product.

Abstract

A composite and method for producing the composite by incorporating wood or wood pulp fibres with a suitable thermoplastic polymer and coupling agent are described. Homogeneous, void-free transparent/translucent thermoplastic materials in the form of pellets, films or three-dimensional moldable products are produced. The wood pulp fibres can be discrete natural fibres, and flexible assemblies of nano to micro elements, e.g., assemblies of aggregated carbon nanotubes. It is also possible to use our vacuum-assisted co-extrusion process to produce hybrid composites comprising the wood pulp fibre and a further rigid fibre, like glass or carbon fibres, and a flexible fibre or fibrillar network, like cellulose fibres or cellulose filaments. The thermoplastic resin can be, but not limited to, polyolefins, like polypropylene or polyethylene, or polyesters, like polylactic acid, or co-polymers, like acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer.

Abstract

A ready-to-mold reinforced thermoplastic sheet molding compound material comprising water dispersible cellulose filaments (CF). The content of CF being of 5 wt% to 50 wt% by dry weight. The present relates to a process for the depolymerization of lignin using chemicals recoverable by the soda or kraft mill recovery cycles. The process involves the use of sodium hydroxide or white liquor to depolymerize lignin in black liquor or other lignins (e.g. hydrolysis lignin, kraft lignin) by conducting the reaction at 170-250 C for up to 3 hours in the presence or absence of a co-solvent and a capping agent. The depolymerized lignin is then obtained by acidifying the reaction products to a low pH to precipitate the de-polymerized lignin, followed by particle coagulation, cake filtration and washing with acid and water to obtain a purified depolymerized lignin product.

Abstract

The present relates to a process for the depolymerization of a feedstock comprising lignin producing depolymerized lignins comprising the loading of the feedstock, a catalyst, a polyalcohol, and water into a reactor; heating the reactor to about 150-300°C to depolymerize the lignin producing a depolymerized lignin mixture; stopping the depolymerization reaction by quenching with cold water; acidifying/neutralizing the depolymerized lignin mixture derived products; precipitating depolymerized lignin and solid residues from the depolymerized lignin; dissolving the precipitated depolymerized lignin and solid residues in acetone; and separating the depolymerized lignin from the solid residues by filtration producing a solid depolymerized lignin. The produced solid depolymerized lignin can be used in the production of lignin-based rigid polyurethane foam, a phenol formaldehyde resole and a lignin-based epoxy resin with a high percentage of bio-content (≥ 50 wt. %).

Methods and systems for controlling operation of a smelt dissolving tank receiving a flow of smelt and having a vent stack in fluid communication are provided. A dissolving liquid is injected into the smelt dissolving tank at a predetermined injection rate. A temperature of a flow of vapour in the vent stack is measured with a sensor. The pre-dispersed semi-dry output may be further processed inline or by batch process air agitation at velocities sufficient to further separate fibers and loosen fibrous entanglements.

A novel method is disclosed to make cellulose filaments (CF) from wood or other plant fibers with lower energy consumption. The method consists of multi-stage, high consistency refining, followed by low consistency refining or by low consistency, non-refining mechanical treatment, of wood or other plant fibers. The total specific refining energy for the multi-stage, high consistency refining is preferably 2, 000 - 18,000 kWh/t, and more preferably 2,000 - 12,000 kWh/t. The CF produced can be used as a superior reinforcement additive in the production of paper, tissue or paperboard and in the production of plastic composites. It can also be used as a viscosity or rheology modifier in food products, coatings or drilling muds. The CF produced can also be used to make strong films for application in packaging and in composites.

The method comprising providing a cellulosic filament substantially free of any binder; providing an inorganic filler comprising an average particle size of less than 5 μm; mixing the cellulosic filament and the filler to produce a slurry; transferring the slurry in a preforming jig to produce a wet mat in the jig; and hot press compression molding the mat to produce the in-plane isotropic product. The inorganic fillers were uniquely shown substantially useful to accelerate the final dewatering (drying) in the hot press at 150°C/250 psi and to eliminate delamination issue insitu the molded products. Furthermore, the hot press molded products were remarkably improved with respect to the surface quality and the dimensional stability with outstanding increase in its tensile, flexural and impact properties, all with respect to the cellulosic filament inorganic filler-free molded products.

Abstract

The method consists of providing a high consistency cellulose pulp with a consistency of 20 to 65 wt% solids, a multi-pass high consistency refining of the high consistency cellulose pulp with a total specific refining energy of 2,000 to 18,000 kWh/t to produce a refined cellulose material, diluting the refined cellulose material to a low consistency of 0.1 to 6 wt% solids to produce a low consistency cellulose material and a mechanical treatment of the low consistency cellulose material with a shearing apparatus at a specific mechanical energy less than 3,000 kWh/t wherein the cellulose filaments is a fibrillated fiber having an aspect ratio of at least 200 to 5000 and a width of 30 nm to 500 nm. This produces cellulose filaments having superior tensile strength at a reduced total specific refining energy.

Abstract

A novel method is disclosed to make cellulose filaments (CF) from wood or other plant fibers with lower energy consumption. The method consists of multi-stage, high consistency refining, followed by low consistency refining or by low consistency, non-refining mechanical treatment, of wood or other plant fibers. The total specific refining energy for the multi-stage, high consistency refining is preferably 2,000-18,000 kWh/t, and more preferably 2,000-12,000 kWh/t. The CF produced can be used as a superior reinforcement additive in the production of paper, tissue or paperboard and in the production of plastic composites. It can also be used as a viscosity or rheology modifier in food products, coatings or drilling muds. The CF produced can also be used to make strong films for application in packaging and in composites.

A composite and method for producing the composite by incorporating wood or wood pulp fibres with a suitable thermoplastic polymer and coupling agent are described. Homogeneous, void-free transparent/translucent thermoplastic materials in the form of pellets, films or three-dimensional moldable products are produced. Abstract

Radio-frequency methods for engineered wood products (EWPs), such as thick EWP products and plywood having higher moisture contents are disclosed. For thick EWP products, intermittent RF is used as the sole energy source to heat the thick EWPs. This method for thick EWPs yields a higher panel MC of 9-12% compared to 5-8% from conventional hot pressing. The RF heating process facilitates manufacturing of structural composite lumber (SCL) products including LVL, oriented strand lumber (OSL) and veneer strand lumber (VSL) in addition to sawn lumber. For plywood products, a method of using RF in pre-pressing of stack of veneer layers for preparation of plywood is developed. In a preferred embodiment a conventional cold pre-press is retrofitted with a radio-frequency (RF) generator that pre-heats the stack of veneer layers to 60-80ºC under pressure. The pre-heating allows for a final hot press at lower press temperature and higher MC within the stack.

Abstract

A composition and a method for producing mesoporous carbon materials with a chiral or achiral organization. In the method, a polymerizable inorganic monomer is reacted in the presence of nanocrystalline cellulose to give a material of inorganic solid with cellulose nanocrystallites organized in a chiral nematic organization. The cellulose can be carbonized through thermal treatment under inert atmosphere (e.g., nitrogen or argon) and the silica may subsequently be removed using aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or hydrogen fluoride (HF) to give the stable mesoporous carbon materials that retain the chiral nematic structure of the cellulose. These materials may be obtained as free-standing films with very high surface area. Through control of the reaction conditions the pore-size distribution may be varied from predominantly microporous to predominantly mesoporous materials. These are the first materials to use cellulose as both the structural template and carbon source for a mesoporous carbon material. These are also the first carbon materials to combine mesoporosity with long-range chiral ordering. Possible applications for these materials include: charge storage devices (e.g. supercapacitors and anodes for Li-ion batteries), adsorbents, gas purifiers, light-weight nanocomposite materials, catalyst supports (e.g., for chiral transformations), gas storage, and as a hard-template to generate other materials, preferably with chiral structures.

We found that a resin bed packed with an acid retardation resin can be used to achieve an efficient separation (i.e. 98.5% recovery of the acid) of the sulfuric acid from the sugars. The resin bed can be simply regenerated with water.

Most processes currently being proposed and/or used for the production of lignin from kraft or soda black liquors are capable of producing two main types of lignin: high residual content (HRC) lignin and low residual content (LRC) lignin. Surprisingly, it was discovered that HRC lignin, is a suitable ingredient in alkaline adhesives, particularly wood adhesives of the phenolic type (e.g. resole resins). This biomaterial is environmentally green and remarkably low cost, which makes it an industrially viable material to be used as a novel and major ingredient in phenolic adhesives for the manufacture of exterior grade plywood, laminated veneer lumber, oriented strand board (OSB) and other wood products - this was successfully demonstrated in a number of laboratory experiments as well as several different mill trials. Abstract

Most processes currently being proposed and/or used for the production of lignin from kraft or soda black liquors are capable of producing two main types of lignin: high residual content (HRC) lignin and low residual content (LRC) lignin. Surprisingly, it was discovered that HRC lignin, is a suitable ingredient in alkaline adhesives, particularly wood adhesives of the phenolic type (e.g. resole resins). This biomaterial is environmentally green and remarkably low cost, which makes it an industrially viable material to be used as a novel and major ingredient in phenolic adhesives for the manufacture of exterior grade plywood, laminated veneer lumber, oriented strand board (OSB) and other wood products—this was successfully demonstrated in a number of laboratory experiments as well as several different mill trials. The composition, preparation and application of such wood adhesives are hereby disclosed.

Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a process for extracting sugars from a pretreated lignocellulosic biomass. This process consists of contacting the pretreated lignocellulosic biomass with low charges of an aqueous peroxy acid (PA) solution to produce a liquid fraction (containing a small amount of lignin and hemicellulose degradation products) and a solid fraction containing cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The solid fraction can then be subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis with a variety of cell wall-degrading enzymes to produce a lignin-rich residue and a sugar solution that can be fermented to a variety of (bio)chemicals.
