Disclosed is a single brew beverage cartridge (20) for use in a brewing apparatus (10). The cartridge (20) includes a lid (22) and a cup shaped filter (24) suspended below the lid (22) and in which a beverage brewing ingredient (26) is held. The lid (22) includes an annular collar (28) to prevent the lid from deforming when a needle (16) of the brewing apparatus pierces it during the brewing process. Preferably the cartridge (20) is formed of materials so that it is compostable and biodegradable.
A package including a fitment for holding a liquid therein to dispense the liquid and the fitment itself. The fitment is a metering dispensing valve arranged to be secured to a flexible bag for selectively dispensing a metered quantity of the liquid therefrom. It includes a piercing member for piercing through the bag to provide access to the interior of the bag and a compressible bulb having a reservoir in it. The dispensing valve also includes an inlet valve to the reservoir and an outlet valve from the reservoir. The bulb is arranged to be compressed and then released to enable a metered amount of the liquid to be drawn into a reservoir. The bulb can then be compressed again to dispense the metered amount of liquid from the reservoir through the outlet valve to the outlet.
A package for dispensing a flowable material is disclosed. The package includes an interior chamber for holding the flowable material, a coupling insert located within the chamber and a piercing member. The piercing member includes a dispensing tube and is arranged to pierce through the package to communicate with the chamber and thereafter to snap-connect to the coupling insert. The contents of the package can then be dispensed from the package via the dispensing tube. The coupling insert is arranged to be moved to any desired position within the chamber. The package's wall may be constructed, e.g., be transparent and/or include target indicia thereon, to facilitate the positioning of the coupling insert at the desired position.
A one-way valve (20) and a flexible package (10) including the valve are disclosed. The valve basically comprises a base member (22), a flexible septum (24) and a stake (36). The base member is mounted on a wall (12) of the package and includes a valve seat (32) and at least one inlet port (34). The septum is formed of a resilient material and is connected to the base member by the stake, with a first portion of the septum contiguous with the stake fixed in position with respect to the base member and a second portion of the septum engaging the valve seat and covering and sealing the at least one inlet port. The septum is arranged to flex off of the valve seat to unseal the at least one inlet port when the pressure of gas at the at least one inlet port reaches a threshold.

B65D 81/20 - Containers, packaging elements, or packages, for contents presenting particular transport or storage problems, or adapted to be used for non-packaging purposes after removal of contents providing specific environment for contents, e.g. temperature above or below ambient under vacuum or superatmospheric pressure, or in a special atmosphere, e.g. of inert gas
A fitment for package holding a liquid and a package including such a fitment. The fitment is a metering dispensing valve arranged to be secured to a flexible bag for selectively dispensing a metered quantity of the liquid therefrom. It includes a compressible bulb and a piercing member which when actuated pierces through the bag to enable a metered amount of the liquid to be drawn into a reservoir in the bulb. The bulb can then be compressed to dispense the metered amount of liquid from the reservoir. The dispensing valve also includes a inlet valve to the reservoir and an outlet valve from the reservoir. The fitment may include a pair of barriers to enable it to be sterilized before being secured to the bag form an aseptic package.
Apparatus (20) for holding a flexible package (10) filled with a liquid (12). The apparatus includes an inflatable' void-filling device (24) and a rigid outer container (22) having a lid (34) and a hollow interior in which the flexible package is located. The lid is arranged to be located over the filled package, whereupon some void results therebetween. The inflatable device is located within the hollow interior over the flexible package and arranged to be filled with compressed gas to cause it to completely fill the void. The compressed gas within the inflatable member automatically expands it to fill the void, irrespective of changes in the volume taken up by the filled package within the outer container.
B65D 81/05 - Containers, packaging elements, or packages, for contents presenting particular transport or storage problems, or adapted to be used for non-packaging purposes after removal of contents specially adapted to protect contents from mechanical damage maintaining contents at spaced relation from package walls, or from other contents
