Abstract

A package including a fitment for dispensing a liquid from a flexible bag is disclosed. The fitment is secured to the bag and includes a compressible bulb and a piercing member that are coupled together. In two embodiments the fitment is configured so that the piercing member pierces through a wall of the bag to dispense the bag's contents through an outlet port of the fitment. One of those embodiments includes a separate valve to open and close the outlet port. Another embodiment does not include a separate valve to open and close the outlet port. A third embodiment makes use of a fitment connected to a filling gland of the bag and which is in communication with the interior of the bag. Abstract

A flexible package and methods of making the same are disclosed. Abstract

A package including a fitment for dispensing a liquid from a flexible bag is disclosed. The fitment is secured to the bag and includes a compressible bulb and a piercing member that are coupled together. In two embodiments the fitment is configured so that the piercing member pierces through a wall of the bag to dispense the bag's contents through an outlet port of the fitment. One of those embodiments includes a separate valve to open and close the outlet port. Another embodiment does not include a separate valve to open and close the outlet port. A third embodiment makes use of a fitment connected to a filling gland of the bag and which is in communication with the interior of the bag. That third embodiment includes a frangible seal forming part of the fitment and which is pierced by the piercing member to dispense the liquid from the bag.

Abstract

Disclosed are apparatus and methods for producing bags filled with a flowable particulate material from a continuous tube of flexible material. The apparatus includes a one-way valve application station having a valve applicator mechanism and a cutting and heating mechanism configured for movement with the bag through the apparatus. The valve applicator mechanism holds a one-way valve for insertion within the bag as the bag is moved through the apparatus. The cutting and heating mechanism is configured to be moved in unison with the valve applicator mechanism to cooperate with it to cut a vent hole in the bag at the valve and to weld the valve to the bag. Then the valve applicator mechanism and the cutting and heating mechanism are moved to apply another one-way valve to another filled bag and the bag with the valve secured thereto is sealed. The resulting sealed bag is suitable for stable palletization.

Abstract

A package system (20) for dispensing a flowable material into a conduit (10) of a dispensing apparatus. The package system includes a package (22) and a connector (26). The package, e.g., a bag-in-box, comprises a hollow bag (28) and a tap fitment (24) for enabling the contents of the bag to flow out when the fitment is open. The connector (26) includes an automatic shut off valve (44) and is arranged to be fixedly secured to the conduit of the dispensing apparatus and releasably secured to the fitment. The valve is arranged to enable the flow of flowable material from the package into the conduit when the fitment is open, while preventing any of that material from flowing out of the conduit when the connector is disconnected from the fitment.

Abstract

A package including a fitment for holding a liquid therein to dispense the liquid and the fitment itself. The fitment is a metering dispensing valve arranged to be secured to a flexible bag for selectively dispensing a metered quantity of the liquid therefrom. It includes a piercing member for piercing through the bag to provide access to the interior of the bag and a compressible bulb having a reservoir in it. The dispensing valve also includes an inlet valve to the reservoir and an outlet valve from the reservoir. The bulb is arranged to be compressed and then released to enable a metered amount of the liquid to be drawn into a reservoir. The bulb can then be compressed again to dispense the metered amount of liquid from the reservoir through the outlet valve to the outlet.

Abstract

A package for dispensing a flowable material is disclosed. The package includes an interior chamber for holding the flowable material, a coupling insert located within the chamber and a piercing member. The piercing member includes a dispensing tube and is arranged to pierce through the package to communicate with the chamber and thereafter to snap-connect to the coupling insert. The contents of the package can then be dispensed from the package via the dispensing tube. The coupling insert is arranged to be moved to any desired position within the chamber. Abstract

A one-way valve (20) and a flexible package (10) including the valve are disclosed. The valve basically comprises a base member (22), a flexible septum (24) and a stake (36). The base member is mounted on a wall (12) of the package and includes a valve seat (32) and at least one inlet port (34). The septum is formed of a resilient material and is connected to the base member by the stake, with a first portion of the septum contiguous with the stake fixed in position with respect to the base member and a second portion of the septum engaging the valve seat and covering and sealing the at least one inlet port. The septum is arranged to flex off of the valve seat to unseal the at least one inlet port when the pressure of gas at the at least one inlet port reaches a threshold.

Abstract

A fitment for package holding a liquid and a package including such a fitment. The fitment is a metering dispensing valve arranged to be secured to a flexible bag for selectively dispensing a metered quantity of the liquid therefrom. It includes a compressible bulb and a piercing member which when actuated pierces through the bag to enable a metered amount of the liquid to be drawn into a reservoir in the bulb. Abstract

Apparatus (20) for holding a flexible package (10) filled with a liquid (12). The apparatus includes an inflatable' void-filling device (24) and a rigid outer container (22) having a lid (34) and a hollow interior in which the flexible package is located. The lid is arranged to be located over the filled package, whereupon some void results therebetween. The inflatable device is located within the hollow interior over the flexible package and arranged to be filled with compressed gas to cause it to completely fill the void. The compressed gas within the inflatable member automatically expands it to fill the void, irrespective of changes in the volume taken up by the filled package within the outer container.
