Abstract

A diaphragm and a bladder for an accumulator each include a thermoplastic film formed in a dome or bulbous shape. A metallic vapor deposition layer is disposed on at least one side of the thermoplastic. Inner and outer rubber layers are adhered on opposite sides of the metallic coated film so that the metallized thermoplastic film provides a barrier film to effectively slow the permeation of a gas such as nitrogen through the diaphragm or bladder.

Abstract

A seal system includes a housing defining a bore having an inner bore surface. A rotating shaft is rotatably received in the bore and includes a recessed annular groove. A seal body has an unassembled form having a ring shape, wherein in an assembled state the seal member is received in the annular groove of the rotating shaft with the seal member flipped with a first side surface facing radially inward toward the annular groove and a second side surface facing radially outward toward the bore, the first side surface along a cylindrical outer diameter surface being lifted off of a bottom surface of the annular groove so that the second side surface along the outer diameter surface engages the inner bore surface while the second side surface along an inner diameter surface is spaced from the inner bore surface.

Abstract

A seal includes an annular mounting portion having a bellows portion extending axially and radially inward from the mounting portion. An axial leg extends axially from the bellows portion. A lay down sealing lip extends radially inward and axially from an end of the axial leg. A dust lip extends from the end of the axial leg in a direction opposite the lay down sealing lip. When the oil side is under negative pressure and when the lay down sealing lip begins to lift radially off the shaft there is a counterbalance force applied to the axial leg through the bellows geometry which maintains the lay down sealing lip in contact with the shaft. In addition, the seal is designed to be flexible enough that the oil side vacuum “rocks” the seal bringing the dust lip into contact with the shaft and blocking airflow.

Abstract

An energy saving seal seals between a bore and a shaft for separating an oil side from an air side of the seal. The seal includes an annular mounting portion having a bellows portion extending axially and radially inward from the mounting portion. An axial leg extends axially from the bellows portion toward the air side. A lay down sealing lip extends radially inward and axially toward the oil side from an end of the axial leg. The sealing lip includes a bead on an outer surface. A dust lip extends from the end of the axial leg in a direction opposite the lay down sealing lip. When the oil side is under a negative pressure, the axial leg flexes inward in response to the negative pressure and engages the bead to provide a self-contact feature that holds the lay down sealing lip in engagement with the shaft.

Abstract

A fuel cell membrane electrode assembly (MEA) comprising first and second gas diffusion layers and an ion exchange membrane disposed between the diffusion layers. Each diffusion layer includes an inner surface facing the membrane, an outer surface opposite the inner surface, and a side surface defining a perimeter of the diffusion layers. An outboard region extends about the diffusion layers at the perimeter. The outboard region surrounds an inboard region. The outboard region has a low density region proximate to the side surface and a high density region between the low density region and the inboard portion. A seal is mounted at the low density region. The high density region prevents portions of the seal from entering the inboard region thereby damaging the MEA. The seal includes a first rim having a smaller radius than a second rim.

Abstract

A low cost and simple seal installation method provides for easy installation of bonded pistons and lip seals in an automatic transmission or other industrial machine. The installation method utilizes a flexible circular disc that can be inserted in a gap between the bore and the shaft and is pressed against the seal lip to flip the seal lip to its desired orientation while the disc is rolled around the circumference of the gap to orientate the entire seal in its proper position.

Abstract

A low friction seal for sealing between a shaft and a bore and includes an inner case adapted to be mounted on the shaft. An outer case is adapted to be mounted within the bore. A seal element is mounted to the inner case and includes a base portion attached to the inner case. A membrane extends from the base portion and an axially extending leg extends from the membrane. A seal lip extends from the axially extending leg and sealingly engages a radially extending portion of the outer case. As the shaft rotates, the centrifugal forces tend to cause the membrane to flex and the torque loads applied by the dynamic seal are reduced to the point that the seal lip can lift off and apply zero torque load.

Abstract

A dynamic seal advantageously utilizes a plurality of grooves on the active side or surface of the seal to capture a leaked lubricant and hydrodynamically pump the lubricant back into the lubricated side of the seal. The grooves are interrupted at an intermediate location by a continuous circumferential band that aids in preventing leakage past the band when the shaft is not rotating and the grooves on both sides of the band pump contaminants away from the sealing lip.

Abstract

A tight package sensor seal includes a first seal portion engaging an outer surface of a sensor body and including a stop surface floatingly engaging a peripheral face surrounding a bore in a cover member. The first seal portion includes a reinforcing insert disposed therein. A second seal portion is axially spaced from the first seal portion and a flexible membrane extends axially between the first and second seal portions. The second seal portion engages an inner diameter of a bore in a cover member and includes a reinforcing insert therein. The sensor seal takes up a small radial space yet allows for radial offset of the sensor body relative to the bore of the cover member.

Abstract

A dynamic shaft seal assembly is provided including a dynamic seal for engaging a rotary shaft. The dynamic seal includes a mounting portion that is mounted within a casing and has an axially extending barrel portion extending from a radially inner end of the mounting portion. The axially extending barrel portion terminates in a radially extending leg portion which extends inwardly from an end of the axially extending portion. A generally conically shaped seal portion extends from an end of the radially extending portion and the seal portion includes a radially inner face engaging the shaft and a radially outer face having a stiffening bead integrally formed thereon. The mounting portion defines a bumper spaced from the axially extending barrel portion by a gap distance that is designed to prevent the seal lip from inverting under sustained high pressure or pressure spikes.

Abstract

A dynamic seal utilizes a groove on the active side of the seal to capture a leaked lubricant and pump the lubricant back into the lubricated side of the seal. The groove stops short of the leading edge of the seal that faces the lubricant side forming a static dam between the termination point of the groove and the seal edge. When the fluid pressure within the groove exceeds the opening pressure for the seal lip, the lubricant within the groove is pumped back into the lubricant side of the seal. The groove can have an induction zone wherein the fluid pressure rise is gradual and a booster zone wherein the fluid pressure rise is relatively faster than in the induction zone. The booster zone is disposed adjacent the static dam. Bars are provided across the spiral grooves to prevent contaminants from reaching and becoming trapped in the booster zone.

Abstract

A unitized seal assembly is provided for installation between linkages of a chain drive designed for tracked vehicles. The seal assembly facilitates field preventative maintenance on the drive chain by utilizing an integral spacer that holds the critical sealing surfaces together at all times, and has a seal head that can be easily removed from the outer link bore of a chain link. Removal of the seal head from the outer link bore causes as-installed clearance passageways between the seal head and seat portions and the spacer to forcefully close and prevent abrasive particles from getting inside the seal and reaching the interior interface junction of the dynamic sealing surfaces during seal maintenance. The seal assembly also includes additional sealing features that provide improved performance.

Abstract

A dynamic seal provides for the return of captured lubricant to the lubricant side regardless of the direction of rotation between the seal and the shaft. The seal uses bi-directional pumping elements to facilitate the hydrodynamic pumping of the captured lubricant in response to relative rotation. The seal includes a valve portion that can change a pumping rate of particular pumping elements such that more lubricant is pumped toward the lubricant side than the non-lubricant side.
