Abstract

A method and apparatus to generate wave motion near an object, and wave forces on the object, without generating a real wave. In particular, for the physical modelling of marine structures within long waves. Within a volume that is small relative to the wavelength, wave motion is approximately uniform. This uniform motion is reproduced by moving a container like the water particles in a real wave. In many cases, this method can replace the existing approach of exciting a wave in a fixed container. In such cases, significant savings may be expected relative to current wave testing facilities. More generally, the method of physically simulating only a small, near-uniform subset of a field, when that is the part of the field of interest, can be applied to other problems.

Abstract

The invention relates to new multicomponent aluminium alloys, with certain proportions of zinc, copper, magnesium and silicon; these alloys have fine microstructures, which allow their processability by means of different manufacturing techniques, including technologies where the rapid solidification of the process presents hot cracking problems and processes where porosity is generated. The invention also relates to the use of the alloys for the manufacture of articles by means of near net shape manufacturing techniques, and to articles comprising said alloys.

Abstract

The present invention refers to an underwater cable robot preferably adapted as cleaning platform, capable of selectively and efficiently removing small and large debris from the seabed and the water column below, with minimal impact on the marine ecosystem. The cleaning platform comprises a floating barge or boat having an opening providing access to a water column below the floating barge, and a submergible frame fitted with a tool adapted for collecting debris underwater. At least three motor driven winches are attached to the floating barge or boat, and a system of cables extending through the opening of the floating barge or boat, connect the winches with the frame. A control unit controls the operation of the winches in a coordinated manner, such that by winding and unwinding the cables, the frame can be moved within a three-dimensional workspace below the floating barge or boat for collecting debris from the seabed and from the water column.

Abstract

It relates to a process for the recovery of a platinum group metal (PGM) material comprising platinum from a waste material which comprises a spent solid residue containing platinum and optionally palladium, which comprises the steps of: a) subjecting the material to a leaching step in the presence of a suitable leaching agent, an oxidizing agent, and an acidic medium; b) when the weight ratio of palladium and platinum in the leachate obtained in the previous step is lower than about 1.1:1, adding palladium to the leachate until such ratio is equal to or higher than about 1.1:1; and c) subjecting the leachate comprising platinum and palladium to a reducing step to precipitate a platinum group metal (PGM) material comprising platinum in metallic form from the leachate. It also relates to the use of palladium for the recovery of platinum from a leachate comprises platinum and palladium in a weight ratio equal to or higher than about 1.1:1.

Abstract

An omnidirectionally orientable vehicle comprising a main body, arms extending radially therefrom and orientable propulsion modules. Each propulsion module is coupled to an arm and comprises at least three propulsion units rigidly attached to the propulsion module. Each propulsion module is coupled to the arm by interposition of a rotary junction formed by a first revolute joint coupled to the arm and a second revolute joint attached to the propulsion module and perpendicularly coupled to the first revolute joint. The first revolute joint allows the propulsion module to rotate around the arm and the second revolute joint allows the propulsion module to rotate around an axis perpendicular to the arm providing the propulsion module with two DOF relative to the main body. The vehicle comprises rotary encoders located in proximity to the revolute joints and configured to monitor the orientation of the propulsion modules relative to the main body.

Abstract

An aerial vehicle that comprises a main frame and a plurality of operable multicopter units. Each multicopter unit has a plurality of propulsion units. The propulsion units are attached to the respective multicopter unit at a fixed roll angle, a fixed pitch angle and a fixed yaw angle. The plurality of operable multicopter units are attached to the main frame by interposition of respective joints and rotate relative to the main frame independently to each other. At least one of the joints has a minimum of one degree of freedom, such that the main frame has a at least the same or higher number of controllable degrees of freedom than the total number of degrees of freedom of the main frame.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for recycling and reusing supported Pd membranes comprising the separation of the Pd (or Pd alloy) layer from the support by contacting the Pd membrane with hydrogen under pressure and at low temperature and then with a second gas different from hydrogen. The Pd layer separated from the support can then be treated to solubilize the Pd and, where appropriate, the alloy metal(s) to obtain salts that can be reused, for example in the preparation of new Pd membranes. The recovered supports can also be reused.

Abstract

A hand rehabilitation device includes at least one support to support a thumb and to perform a flexion/extension movement for rehabilitating the thumb. The flexion/extension movement is actioned by a first transmission mechanism to which the support is connected. The device further includes another support to support the index finger and to perform a flexion/extension movement for rehabilitating the finger. The flexion/extension movement is actioned by a second transmission mechanism to which the at least one second support is connected. The device further includes another support for the three remaining fingers which is configured to perform a flexion/extension movement for rehabilitating the three remaining fingers. The flexion/extension movement is actioned by a third transmission mechanism to which the at least one third support is connected. The three transmission mechanisms are actuated by a motor; and the three flexion/extension movements of the three supports are independent from each other.

Abstract

It relates to process for the extraction of rare earth elements from a starting product containing them in metal or alloy form which comprises: a) contacting the starting product containing rare earth elements in metal or alloy form with a deep eutectic solvent that consists of a mixture of a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) compound (A) selected from a salt of the formula Cat+X− (I), betaine or a salt thereof, and carnitine or a salt thereof; and a hydrogen bond donor (HBD) compound (B) in a molar ratio of (A) to (B) from 1:10 to 10:1, wherein the deep eutectic solvent is capable of extracting at least 50%w/w of one or more rare earth elements contained in the starting solid product in less than 5 hours, and b) separating the solvent containing the rare earth elements in dissolution from the undissolved solid.
