The controlling step may comprise cooling of the fuel to reduce the viscosity of the fuel. Also described are systems for putting the process into effect. The system may comprise: - a compression ignition engine; and - a control system for measuring the temperature of a fuel prior to its introduction into the compression ignition engine and adjusting the temperature of the fuel following measurement and prior to introduction of the fuel into the compression ignition engine.
