The present invention relates to the decontamination of contaminated graphite, in particular of irradiated graphite. Depending on the requirements specific to the country concerned, disposal and storage of the formed piece comprising the treated graphite is possible with less demanding safety requirements. As a result, the volume of such material that requires particularly sophisticated and consequently particularly cost-intensive disposal and storage, particularly storage deep underground, can be reduced significantly. This also leads to significantly reduced costs for the disposal of contaminated graphite, large quantities of which occur on an annual basis.

Abstract

An apparatus and a method performable with the apparatus for sequential melting and refining of materials are proposed. The materials treated in the process are converted to a liquid state of matter by heat sources. The process is particularly suitable for treating metals, semimetals and ceramics, for example in order to produce alloys and/or to refine the materials. During the method, the material goes through various treatment chambers which enable treatment at different pressure levels.

The invention relates to a universal joint suspension system for a re-melting furnace, said system being used to hold the electrode rod (3) mounting comprising the consumable electrode (4) cardanically in relation to the furnace body, thus allowing the mounting (6) to be tipped in any direction.
