Abstract

A carrier 85 is embedded within the flexible material of a sealing, trimming or guiding strip 11 for sealing around the frame 8 of a door 6. The carrier is provided with a surface coating 101,103,158 which is in a solid physical state prior to application of the material to the carrier 85. The material may be in powder form or in the form of a sheet, tape or foil. The material bonds to both the carrier 85 and the flexible material of the strip 11. Therefore, the flexible material is conveniently and securely bonded to the carrier 85.

Abstract

A sealing strip (13) has two ends (13A) and (13B) which are bonded together by heat-bonding foil (15). Electromagnetic radiation/a magnetic or electrical field and/or heat are applied to the sealing strip (13) and the foil (15) so as to cause the flexible material of the sealing strip (13) and the relatively rigid material of the carrier (21) embedded within the strip (13) to bond to the foil (15). This provides a strong bond between the ends (13A) and (13B) of the strip (13). The electromagnetic radiation/magnetic or electrical field causes inductive or capacitive heating of the carrier (21), which is formed from e.g. metal. An apparatus (30) for facilitating the bonding operation is also disclosed.

Abstract

A sensing arrangement for sensing a body part in a vehicle opening is described. The arrangement includes a flexible sealing member with two separate electrically conductive members. The two electrically conductive members are interconnected by an electrical oscillator which generates an electric field in the vehicle opening. The arrangement also includes detecting circuitry for detecting a change in the capacitance of the electric field when the body part is in the vicinity of the opening, and for detecting electrical continuity of the first and second electrically conductive members.

Abstract

A sensing arrangement for detecting a body part in a vehicle opening is described. The arrangement includes a flexible sealing member with first and second separate electrically conductive members which are connected by a varicap diode. In operation of the sensing arrangement an electrically oscillating signal is applied to one of the electrically conductive members to generate an electric field in the opening. The control voltage of the varicap diode is modulated by a frequency f0 and the sensing arrangement includes detecting means for detecting frequency f0 to verify that there are no breaks and/or defects in said electrically conductive members.

Abstract

A sensing assembly for sensing a body part in a window opening or a boot opening is described. The sensing assembly includes first and second electrically conductive members and electrically oscillating means for applying an electrically oscillating signal to the second electrically conductive member. The electric field generated by the applied signal is concentrated in the opening region, and if a body part is within the opening closing movement of the window or boot is halted.

Abstract

A moulded sealing, trimming or guiding member, in particular a sealing corner (3), having a two part coating with a part A of fluoroelastomer containing cross linkable sites dissolved in an organic solvent and a part B based on organosilane comprising hydrolysable groups and a monoprimary amine. Such a sealing corner (3) is intended to serve as part of a sealing system for, for example a window of a vehicle when located between a first extruded sealing member (6) at a header and a second extruded sealing member (7) at a pillar. The coating is applicable without a primer and has excellent abrasion resistance properties. A method of making such a moulded sealing, trimming or guiding member and a method of coating such a moulded sealing, trimming or guiding member with Lord HPC-5B coating.

Abstract

A sealing or guiding assembly for sealing or guiding a corner of a closure member such as a window 109 for an opening is disclosed. The sealing or guiding assembly is attached to a frame 8 comprising panels 22, 24. Strips 91A, 91B of flexible material extend towards and meet at the comer and are shaped to receive the closure member 109 at the corner and are adapted to be supported by the frame 8. At the region of the corner a corner support is provided which forms part of the frame 8 and bridges across the corner. At the distal edge of the panels 22, 24/corner support a third strip 145 is provided. Away from the corner region the third strip extends generally parallel to the strips 91A and 91B. At the corner region, the strip (145 bridges across the corner. A flap 170 of flexible material is joined to the strips 91A, 91B in the region of the corner and bridges across the corner between the strips 91A, 91B. The join between the flap 170 and the strip 91A is obscured by the lip 102. The join between the flap 170 and the strip 91B is obscured by the lip 104B and moulded part 146. The gap 147 between the moulded flap 170 and the limb 144 of the strip 145 is obscured from view by the lip 103 of the strip 145.

Abstract

A join- free sealing strip 1 is disclosed for fitting to the window frame (1) of a vehicle door (5). This sealing strip has embedded therein a slotted carrier. The carrier is stretch bent (or otherwise treated) at regions L5M where there is a sharp corner to increase the rigidity of the strip (1) in these regions. At a position (O) between these regions the carrier is arranged to be relatively less rigid and to be relatively easily extendible and/or compressible. The strip (1) can be simply fitted to the door frame (3) due to the rigid sharp corner regions L5M. The relatively less rigid region (O) between the corner regions allows variations in the dimensions between different door frames (3) to be accommodated. A procedure for avoiding indentations in the flexible material of the strip (1) being visible at positions corresponding to the locations of the slots in the carrier (i.e. avoiding carrier read-through) is also disclosed. A method and apparatus for selectively forming slits in the carrier is also disclosed.
