Abstract

A communication system, method and computer program product enable transmitting information via the same spectrum as a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar using the same spectrum. First, a radar system conducts a search mode using a MIMO radar waveform. Second, an uplink communications transmitter employs a new type of signaling that allows the radar to search for targets in the spatial direction of the communication transmitter. Specifically, the MIMO radar can conduct a search task while receiving data from a communication transmitter using the same frequency allocation without blinding the MIMO radar in the direction of the target.

Abstract

A tri-layer optical fiber. The fiber has a core which is preferably a single crystal and outer cladding, to reduce signal loss. The cladding process begins with high porosity particles, and is known to introduce porosity in the cladding and at the core/cladding interface. The porosity increases refraction and signal loss. The invention interposes a film layer intermediate the core and cladding. The film layer is sputter coated and preferably of the of same material as the cladding. The film prevents diffusion of the porous cladding into the core, minimizing porosity and improving signal transmission.

Abstract

A method of analyzing and correcting a complex dynamic waveform, such as a radar wave or communication wave. The method comprises dividing a complex waveform into its real and imaginary components, then separately analyzing each such waveform in a dedicated neural to determine respective real and imaginary loss functions as the difference between the actual characteristics and desired characteristics of the mean squared error and at least one of frequency-domain power, time-domain envelope, and frequency-domain phase. The real waveform and imaginary waveform are independently corrected, then recombined into a single corrected complex waveform. These differences are fed into a neural network to improve prediction correction to bring the actual waveform closer to a benchmark waveform. The method of the present invention displays increased accuracy over the prior art without increased computing time or sacrificing notch depth.

Abstract

The present invention relates to articles comprising crosslinked polymer network comprising thioether crosslinks and process of making and using same. Such thiol-ene crosslinking reactions not only make the isocyanate crosslinking reaction unnecessary, but they also improve the article's strength due to chemical crosslinking between the article's resin layers, and reduce or eliminate post curing. Thus resulting in a sufficiently cured article in a much shorter time.

Abstract

The present invention relates to gels and processes for making bundles of aligned ceramic nanofibers, ceramic nanostructures made by such processes, and methods of using such ceramic nanostructures. Such process is templated via block copolymer self-assembly but does not require any post processing thermal and/or solvent annealing steps. As a result, such process is significantly more efficient and scalable than other processes that are templated via block copolymer self-assembly. The resulting fibers are aligned according to the direction of deposition, making steps where individual fibers are bundled unnecessary.

Abstract

The present disclosure provides a crossbar circuit for performing in-memory computing and methods for performing vector-matrix multiplication (VMM) using the crossbar circuit. The crossbar circuit may include crossbar subarrays, trans-impedance amplifiers (TIAs), and analog-to-digital converter (ADCs). The crossbar subarrays may be programmed sequentially to compensate for residual errors associated with the previously programmed crossbar subarrays. For example, a first crossbar subarray may be programmed based on target conductance values. A second crossbar subarray may then be programmed based on the programming error associated with the first crossbar subarray. After the programming of the crossbar subarrays, input signals representative of an input matrix may be applied to the programmed crossbar subarrays. The TIAs may generate output voltages representative of accumulated current on the bit lines of the programmed crossbar subarrays. The DACs may convert the output voltage of the TIAs into digital outputs representing an output of a VMM operation.

Abstract

An image processing system receives a digital image and analyzes the digital image to determine a resolution limit, referred to herein as “feature resolution,” for measuring a metric for features of the image within an acceptable margin of error. Specifically, the system segments a digital image and calculates the error associated with the segmented data when features within a certain range a measured metric (e.g., size range) are removed from the segmented data. This analysis can be repeatedly performed with different cutoff values for the metric until at least a threshold amount of error is reached, thereby indicating a resolution limit at the boundary of an acceptable amount of error.

Abstract

The present invention discloses cured composites having improved surfaces and processes of making and methods of using same. Such processes use ultra-short pulse lasers, for example, a femto-second laser to ablate material without the detrimental heat affected zones of other laser processes. Such process can not only increases surface roughness and clean contaminates, but can also selectively remove the matrix material and expose the surface fibers of cured composites. The treated cured composites have improved thermal and electrical pathways that can dissipate unwanted heat and electricity when two or more prepregs and/or cured composites are bonded or cured to form a single article.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of enabling parity-time symmetric optical waveguides using liquids. Applicants provide a solution to the challenge of mass producing PT symmetric optical waveguide systems by introducing liquids that can be dynamically flown between optical waveguides. Using this method, evanescent wave coupling between optical waveguides can be achieved while having coupling gap dimensions that can be patterned using a standard photolithography process. Thus economic, rapid, and mass production of PT symmetric optical waveguide systems for a broad range of applications is disclosed.

Abstract

An actuator element of a MEMS device on a substrate able to create large, out-of-plane deflection includes two separated metallic layers contacting the substrate. The second metallic layer has a first portion contacting the substrate and a second portion having cantilevered over the substrate and first metallic layer. A first insulating layer contacts the cantilevered metallic layer on a bottom contacting surface and a second insulating layer contacting the cantilevered metallic layer on a portion of a top contacting surface. The second, cantilevered portion of the metallic layer is prestressed causing the distal end to deform away from the substrate. Applying a voltage potential between the first and second metallic layers creates an electrostatic field drawing the distal end toward the substrate.

Abstract

A multi-junction resistance strain gauge comprises a substrate; a sinterable ink deposited directly on the substrate forming a non-conductive pattern; a stripe pattern generated on the sinterable ink by sintering, the stripe pattern having one or more non-conductive gaps, the stripe pattern having a first electrical conductivity; a sintered bridge across each of the one or more gaps and providing electrical continuity through the stripe and across the gaps, each bridge having a second electrical conductivity which is lower than the first electrical conductivity. The substrate is a non-conductive material or a conductive material coated with a thin insulator on which the stripe pattern is generated. The sinterable ink is a silver ink. The first electrical conductivity and the second electrical conductivity comprise different electrical conductivity. The first electrical conductivity of the stripe is a factor of about 1.7 or more higher than the second electrical conductivity of the bridge.

Abstract

A vascular access disassembling needle assembly is provided that enables rapid insertion of a guide wire into the needle and subsequent rapid removal of the access needle off the guide wire by facile disassembly of the needle. The disassembling needle assembly includes a needle portion wherein the needle breaks apart by splitting along at least one seam that extends from the proximal to the distal end to allow removal of the guide wire. Various mechanical features are described that can facilitate the separation of the needle body along at least one seam. Once one or more seams are separated, the needle body may be removed from the guide wire without the need to withdraw the needle along the length of the guide wire, which permits preloading of expanders and other medical devices onto the guidewire.

Abstract

Methods of aerial vehicle trajectory planning are provided. The method is used where the aerial vehicle is in an area with one or more obstacles therein and the aerial vehicle has a minimum turn radius. The methods involve finding safe flight corridors, which are constructed from sequences of triangles using constrained Delaunay triangulation of the feasible space. A quadratic Bezier curve corresponding to each triangle in the flight corridor is defined. The trajectory is composed of quadratic Bezier curves that are aligned end-to-end which satisfy the vehicle motion constraints. The method described herein may also be used for path planning.

Abstract

Systems and methods for partial aortic occlusion are provided. The system may include a catheter having an expandable aortic blood flow regulation device disposed on the distal end of the catheter for placement within an aorta of a patient, and a catheter controller unit that causes the device to expand and contract to restrict blood flow through the aorta. The system also may include sensors for measuring blood pressure distal and proximal to the expandable device. The system further may include non-transitory computer readable media having instructions stored thereon, wherein the instructions, when executed by a processor coupled to the sensors, cause the processor to estimate aortic blood flow based on the measured blood pressures and corresponding waveforms, compare the estimated aortic blood flow with a target aortic blood flow range, generate an alert if the estimated aortic blood flow falls outside the target aortic blood flow range, and cause the catheter controller unit to adjust expansion and contraction of the expandable device to adjust an amount of blood flow through the aorta if the estimated aortic blood flow falls outside the target aortic blood flow range.

Abstract

The present invention relates a method of improving a radar system, a module for improving a radar system and an improved radar system that are more efficient than current radar systems and methods of using same. Specifically, in the context of space-time adaptive processing at high angle-doppler resolutions, this advanced radar system utilizes an improved estimator of the interference covariance matrix together with the plug-in whiten-then-match filter. This improvement (a) roughly optimizes the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise, thereby increasing the probability of accurately detecting targets' angular positions and radial velocities, (b) maintains a roughly constant, and thus controllable, false alarm rate, and (c) sometimes associates data preprocessing steps with a Reed-Mallett-Brennan detection loss, providing a guideline for rejecting certain preprocessing steps. Collectively, these advancements signify a considerable leap forward in radar technology.
