Abstract

A sorption media with a high capacity to remove heavy metals, lead, and mercury, in particular when synthesized from a titanium source that contains sulfur, such as black liquor or titanyl sulfate (TiOSO4). The use of sulfur provides a higher than expected capacity for Pb and/or Hg. A Group 1 and/or Group 2 metal-titanosilicate is employed, having a Ti to Si molar ratio of 0.5-2, a pore volume of at least less than or equal to 0.25 cc/g.

Abstract

An alumina-based adsorbent and method of making exhibiting high affinity and capacity towards cations and oxyanions in a broad pH range and presence of large excess of competitive ions. Alumina based adsorbent is a mixed oxide of alumina existing in tetra-, penta-, and octahedral coordination at specific ratio, and oxides of polyvalent metals of elements titanium, zirconium, tin, cerium, lanthanum, iron, or combinations thereof. The alumina-based adsorbent may be used for selective removal of oxyanions of fluoride, phosphorus, arsenic, chromium, and/or selenium, and/or cations of lead, mercury, cadmium, copper, and/or zinc, from drinking water, industrial streams and wastes, in medicine and food industry.

Abstract

A filter media for implementation in a sugar purification process that allows for a significant increase in sorbent material while maintaining, and enhancing the decolorization and. hydraulic properties. The filter media incorporates sorbent material, fiber having specific properties that allows for small particle sorbent material without jeopardizing the hydraulic properties of the media, and an electrolyte. The sorbent material is an inorganic, an adsorption, or ion exchange media, or a metal-organic framework. The implementation of this filter media in a sugar purification process eliminates the need for a clarification step during refining while providing for enhanced decolorization and hydraulic properties for fluid flow.

Abstract

An alumina-based adsorbent and method of making exhibiting high affinity and capacity towards fluoride ions and oxyanions of phosphorus and arsenic in a broad pH range and presence of large excess of competitive ions. Alumina based adsorbent is a mixed oxide of alumina existing in tetra-, penta-, and octahedral coordination at specific ratio, and oxides of polyvalent metals of elements titanium, zirconium, tin, cerium, lanthanum, iron, or combinations thereof. The alumina based adsorbent may be used for selective removal of fluoride ion and oxyanions of phosphorus and arsenic from drinking water, industrial streams and wastes, in medicine and food industry.

Abstract

A precoat filtration element for a condensate polisher system that yields high weld strength in the form of a septa having a core with a plurality of perforations and wound filter elements, the wound filter elements wound around said core, and the septa including an extension flange at one end; and an end fitting having a solid base and a threaded post, the end fitting being slideably engaged within the extension flange such that an outside wall of the solid base is in mechanical contact with an inside wall of said extension flange, and upon insertion, the threaded post is coaxial with the septa center axis, and extends longitudinally outwards away from said septa. Spot welding the end fitting solid base to the extension flange provides high tensile strength over prior art designs.

Abstract

An underdrain filter or strainer for use with power generation and ion exchange facilities, such as, but not limited to, deep bed demineralizers used in nuclear power plants deep bed ion exchangers. The filter is fabricated from a sintered, stainless steel mesh or wire-cloth filter media having a pore structure with pore size ranging approximately from one micron to two hundred microns. The filter media is composed of a plurality of filter media layers including a perforated inner core bonded to at least one drainage wire mesh, a filtration wire mesh, and a protective wire mesh forming an outer diameter, the layers being diffusion bonded to form a single monolithic laminate.

Abstract

This invention relates to a process for producing a sodium titanate that can be utilized in an ion exchange media. The sodium titanate ion exchange media can be subsequently used to remove contaminants such as metals from water in a variety of applications. The sodium titanate can be synthesized by utilizing a source of titanium that includes a nano-crystalline titanium having a mean primary crystallite diameter of about 1 nm to about 30 nm.
