Abstract

Apparatuses and methods for detecting and/or characterizing fluid flow through a hydrant in a recess below ground level are provided. An apparatus includes a housing, one or more sensors, and a processor. The housing is configured to connect to the hydrant. The one or more sensors are in the housing and are configured to output sensed data in response to fluid flow through the hydrant. The processor is in the housing and is configured to determine one or more sensed data characteristics from the sensed data, the one or more sense data characteristics representing one or more properties of the sensed data, and to transmit, via a wireless communication interface, the one or more sensed data characteristics to a remote computational device for conversion, outside the processor, to one or more flow characteristics of the fluid flow through the hydrant.

Abstract

Apparatuses and methods for detecting and determining flow in a water release assembly using a flow monitoring module are provided. The flow monitoring module includes an attachment structure for attaching to an external fluid flow conduit, a flow meter for detecting fluid flow through the external fluid flow conduit, a fluid flow processing module, and a solar cell configured to provide electrical energy to the fluid flow processing module. The fluid flow processing module is configured to acquire and store location data related to a geographic location of the flow monitoring module; to store fluid flow data related to fluid flow through the external fluid flow conduit and based, at least in part, on the fluid flow detected by the flow meter; and to wirelessly transmit the location data and the fluid flow data to an external computer.

A flow monitoring module may include a flow meter, a fluid flow processing module, a generator, and a charging circuit. The flow meter detects fluid flow through a fluid flow conduit. The processing module is configured to acquire and store location data, store fluid flow data, and wirelessly transmit the location data and the fluid flow data to an external computer. The location data relates to a geographic location of the flow monitoring module. The fluid flow data relates to fluid flow through the fluid flow conduit and is based, at least in part, on the detected fluid flow. The generator is configured to convert mechanical energy from the fluid flow to electrical energy. The charging circuit is configured to control charging of an energy storage device using the electrical energy generated by the generator.
