Abstract

The present invention relates to a magnetic levitation system (10) comprising a base (12); a body (14); and at least one magnetic unit (16a, 16b) having a first magnetic member (18) attached to the base, a second magnetic member (20) attached to the base and spaced apart from the first magnetic member in a transverse direction, and a third magnetic member (22) attached to the body. In use, the third magnetic member (22) sits above the space between the first and second magnetic members with the poles of the first, second and third magnetic members arranged in order that the third magnetic member is repelled by the first and second magnetic members thereby to urge the body to levitate in a levitation direction that is substantially perpendicular to the transverse direction, wherein at least one magnetic unit of the at least two magnetic units is aligned perpendicular to another magnetic unit of the at least two magnetic units in the transverse direction and spaced apart from said another magnetic unit.
