Abstract

Mail delivery system including a modular mailbox assembly (11) with one or more mailboxes (12, 13) arranged to be publicly available, which mailbox (12, 13) being provided with a door (15) and possibly a slot (15), said door (14) being provided with an electronic lock (26) to be operated by wireless communication means. The modular mailbox assembly (11) includes at least one personal mailbox (12) of regular size arranged for receiving regular mail, such as letters and other small mail items, and at least one larger common mailbox (13) arranged for receiving larger mail items which are too larger for the personal mailbox (12), which mailboxes (12, 13) are provided with a permanent geotag for localizing each mailbox (12, 13) in an area with GPS-equipment, where the electronic lock (26) of the personal mailbox (12) is arranged to be affiliated with a permanent release code for enabling the operation of the lock (26) by means of a short range communication device (20) provided with the affiliated permanent release code, and the electronic lock (26) of the larger common mailbox (26) is arranged to be affiliated with a temporary release code for enabling the operation of the electronic lock (26) by means of a short range communication device (20) provided with the temporary release code. The invention also relates to a method for safe delivery of mail items by use if the mailbox assembly.
