Averting plant disease is important in the agricultural and horticultural industries for maintaining the health of crops and therefore their profitability. A particularly problematic disease is fire blight caused by the bacterium Erwina amylovora, which is apt to thrive in warm, humid and rainy conditions. The invention addresses this by way a method that involves applying to the plant fatty acid in soap form and silicate. The fatty acid is in solution or suspension in water.
Many plants are prone to frost damage at low temperatures. The damage tends to be caused by the formation of ice within the plant tissue. It is an object of a preferred form of the invention to go at least some way towards addressing this. To that end the invention is a method of protecting a plant from frost damage, comprising applying to the exterior of the plant (a) fatty acid in solution or suspension and (b) silicate in solution or suspension, in an amount sufficient to protectively interfere with bacteria induced ice nucleation.
Averting plant diseases is an ongoing battle in the agricultural and horticultural industries. Some diseases are minor; however others such as Xanthomonas present a serious problem, causing significant adverse economic impact. It is an object of the invention to go at least some way towards addressing this or to provide the public with a useful choice. The invention comprises a method of treating a plant against disease resulting from pathogens of Proteobacteria (eg Xanthomonas), comprising applying to the plant fatty acid and silicate.
