Abstract

Provided herein are methods for solid state quenching of metal including transferring a heated metal workpiece having an initial workpiece temperature to a press, the press including a first die having an initial first die temperature, the initial first die temperature being lower than the initial workpiece temperature and a second die positioned opposite the first die and having an initial second die temperature, the initial second die temperature being lower than the initial workpiece temperature, wherein the first and second dies are each constructed of a material having a thermal conductivity equal to or greater than 90 W/mK at a temperature of 70 F, closing the press to bring the first die and the second die into pressurized contact with the heated metal workpiece, continuing the pressurized contact between the first and second dies and the metal workpiece to cool the metal workpiece from the initial workpiece temperature to a quenched workpiece temperature, opening the press when the metal workpiece reaches the quenched workpiece temperature to produce a quenched metal workpiece; and removing the quenched metal workpiece from the press.

Abstract

A soft armor panel is provided by work softening a panel formed of a ballistic material. The panel also includes slip planes between adjacent ply groups, the adjacent ply groups remaining unconnected or substantially unconnected at the slip plane. The soft, or conformable, body armor, is resistant to various projectile threats, in which the panel is made by work-softening an otherwise rigid panel. The soft armor panel includes a work softened lamination of a plurality of ply groups. Each ply group comprises one or more layers, each layer comprising a composite material of fibers embedded in a matrix material. A slip plane is disposed between at least one set of adjacent ply groups, such that the adjacent ply groups remain unconnected or substantially unconnected at the slip plane. The softened ballistic panel retains significant ballistic properties, is light weight and can be readily conformed to various torso configurations.

Abstract

A protection system for a structural element is provided. The protection system employs a shield assembly comprising two parts formed of one or more materials configured to provide protection from a threat, such as a blast, projectiles, cutting, or a fire. At least one bracket assembly attaches to the structural element. The shield assembly is hingedly attached to the bracket assembly, so that the two parts of the shield assembly can be moved away from the structural element while remaining attached to the structural element.

Abstract

A multi-layer ballistic or armor panel system includes a hard component strike layer that is a continuous planar assembly of tile elements, the planar assembly having a strike surface and a rear surface. Seams between the tile elements are substantially non-perpendicular to the strike surface, thereby tending to deflect incoming projectiles. Grooves may be formed in one or more of the strike surface and the rear surface of the tile elements to provide a preferential weakness. The armor panel system may also include a reinforcing layer on at least one of the strike surface and the rear surface. A backing layer may be provided after the rear surface.
