Abstract

Ultrasound imaging is performed in three dimensions by firing a multidimensional array of ultrasound transducers comprising N transducers at a target. First reflected signals are sensed with at least some of the N transducers to produce first output signals. The first output signals are provided from only a first portion of the N transducers less than all the N transducers for storage and adaptive beamforming. The multidimensional array of ultrasound transducers comprising N transducers is fired at the target another time to produce second reflected signals. The second reflected signals are sensed with at least some of the N transducers to produce second output signals. The second output signals are provided from only a second portion of the N transducers less than all the N transducers and different from the first portion for storage and adaptive beamforming.

Abstract

Methods are provided for automatically performing atmospheric compensation of a multi or hyper spectral image. One method comprises transforming at least two endmembers extracted from an image into at-ground reflectance. The transformation may be approximate and/or only in certain spectral bands in order to reduce processing time. A matching component is then located in a spectral library for each of the at least two extracted endmembers. Gain and offset values are then calculated using the at least two matched extracted endmember and spectral library component pairs. At least part of the image is then compensated using the calculated gain and offset values. Another method uses at least one endmember extracted from the image and a black level. Methods for atmospheric compensation using water vapor content of pixels are also provided. In addition, methods for shadow correction of hyper and multi spectral images are provided.

Abstract

A process for producing calcium sulfate involves reacting sulfur or hydrogen sulfide with calcium carbonate under anhydrous conditions in the presence of a source of oxygen at a temperature of 200°C or greater. The process for producing calcium sulfate may be integrated into a process that also produces methanol involving desulfurizing a sulfur-contaminated hydrocarbon mixture to obtain hydrogen sulfide and a desulfurized hydrocarbon mixture, reacting the hydrogen sulfide or elemental sulfur obtained from the hydrogen sulfide with calcium carbonate under anhydrous conditions in the presence of an oxygen source at a temperature of 200°C or greater to obtain calcium sulfate and carbon dioxide, and converting the carbon dioxide to methanol. The integrated process permits desulfurization and enhancement of a fuel (e.g. jet fuel) using fewer external inputs by recycling reaction products produced at each step of the process.

Abstract

An obstacle avoidance system for a stabilized aerial vehicle and a method of controlling same are provided. Using low angular resolution obstacle proximity data, such as from low angular resolution obstacle detection sensors, when a determination is made that an operator command to a vehicle propulsion system will result in a collision, the system overrides the operator command and substitutes an avoidance speed command and avoidance heading, while maintaining operator situational awareness, in a manner that is transparent to the operator. In an implementation, examination of objects requires the obstacle avoidance system to allow the vehicle to get close to obstacles. A human-portable aerial vehicle according to an implementation can be used for building surveillance, route inspection, surveillance of windows/hallways/ rooftops, power distribution towers, pipelines, bridges, buildings or close examination of suspect objects.

Abstract

A process for preparing a self-supporting monolithic porous carbonaceous adsorbent structure involves: drying a mixture of polymeric carbon precursor particles and an organic latex binder at a temperature of 100°C or less to form a solid monolith of polymeric carbon precursor particles bound by an organic polymer matrix in a pre-determined shape. The solid monolith in the pre-determined shape is carbonized at a temperature of 800°C or less to form a self-supporting monolithic porous carbonaceous adsorbent structure. The self-supporting monolithic porous carbonaceous adsorbent structure produced by the process has an efficient tortuous gas flow path in the whole monolith, low breath resistance (pressure drop), and strong mechanical strength of the adsorbent structure.

Abstract

A system for determining the detectability of a fleet of vehicles by a listener at a target site. The system receives as input at least the number of vehicles, a selection of a noise signature for each vehicle, and a distance to the target. The system may then estimate noise pressure level for the fleet along the estimated distance from the given location to the target site based on the noise signature associated with each vehicle and display a graph showing the noise pressure level vs. distance from the given location to the target site. In an embodiment, the system may estimate the background noise level at the target site and subtract this from the noise pressure level of the fleet at the target site to determine an expected noise level above background noise at the target site.

Abstract

A man portable device for detecting the presence of hazardous material includes a pulsed or time-modulated light source and an objective scannable across the surface of a sample for projecting light from the light source onto a succession of spots on the surface of the sample. A spectrometer performs a spectral analysis of the induced fluorescence to create a first dataset defining a first vector as a function of wavelength. A time domain detector for measuring the time decay of the induced fluorescence collected simultaneously creates a second dataset defining a second vector as a function of time. A computer identifies hazardous material by performing independent multivariate analysis on the first and second vectors as the objective is scanned across the sample surface based on fluorescent signal models for hazardous materials in the spectral and time domains.

Abstract

A system and method for performing field measurement and testing of a plurality of widely spaced laser beams used in visual warning technology (VWT). VWT uses a combination of widely spaced laser beams, to warn civilians from approaching too close to military security areas. The widely spaced laser beams are displaced using rhomboidal prisms. Each rhomboidal prism receives a corresponding laser beam and displaces it toward a collecting lens. The lens focuses the displaced beams received thereon onto an imaging sensor for testing. Beam shutters may be used for selectively blocking one or more beams in order to test the beams separately and in different combinations.
