Abstract

A method for differentiating induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) involves deleting a sequence encoding LNC000093 long non-coding RNA from the iPSC genome, culturing the modified iPSCs to generate colonies, and dissociating these colonies to form embryoid bodies. The embryoid bodies are transferred to a first plate to induce neural rosette formation. The neural rosettes are detached and cultured in suspension to develop into neurospheres, which are subsequently transferred to a second plate to promote differentiation into RGCs.

Abstract

An autonomous driving system having a three-layer framework to optimize energy consumption in autonomous driving by utilizing the driving trajectory of human drivers. The first layer involves smoothing out the driving path to reduce its curvature, thereby avoiding sudden changes in acceleration and velocity caused by abrupt path changes. The second layer is a trajectory optimization stage, where a relationship between speed and time in the human driving trajectory is assigned to the smoothed path. The acceleration is calculated at each moment based on the motor torque-rotational speed efficiency diagram and the corresponding output efficiency of the motor. A best efficiency interval is then determined based on a reference motor efficiency, which is then converted into an optimal speed and acceleration interval of each of the wheels. On the smooth path, the optimal speed and acceleration interval are jointly optimized to obtain the best driving trajectory in order to ensure that the motor operates in the high-efficiency interval. In the third layer, the generated optimal trajectory is combined with the model predictive control (MPC) method to generate the optimal steering angle to achieve accurate trajectory tracking.

Abstract

An algorithm-driven digital ultraviolet (UV) lithography (DUL) method and apparatus used to fabricate high-quality optical waveguide and many other kinds of high-resolution microstructures without the use of a photomask. Instead of the use of an actual photomask, a virtual mask based on a spatial light modulator is used. The DUL method and apparatus can compensate for a proximity effect caused by light scattering and make the exposure adaptive to a nonlinear response curve of a photoresist, in which an exposure dose-map is created based on the bitmap of a designed pattern together with the optimization parameters determined by system configuration and the photoresist. To fabricate large-area patterns, a plurality of sliced exposure dose-submaps with transition zones that can depress the stitching error caused by mechanical mispositioning are generated for digital lithographic exposure process.

Abstract

Lithium-sulfur (Li—S) batteries using unconventional-phase transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as 1T′-WS2, as the functional layer on the separator. The unique atomic structure of 1T′-WS2 facilitates the strong immobilization and excellent catalytic ability in the conversion of polysulfide intermediates during cycling. Furthermore, the self-assembling of 1T′-WS2 greatly decreases the internal porosity, minimizing the uptake of electrolyte, which can further guarantee the performance of the battery under lean electrolyte conditions. As a result, a cell based on the 1T′-WS2 shows improved performances under high sulfur loading and lean electrolyte conditions. A cell with 12 mg cm−2 mass loading of S with only 25% oversized Li metal anode can deliver specific energy of at least 400 Wh kg−1 and 820 Wh L−1, which is among the best of reported Li—S batteries.

Abstract

A machine learning system predicts a physicochemical property (e.g., lipophilicity) of candidate small molecules for pharmaceuticals. A machine learning model is constructed that is trained from a database of small molecule physicochemical properties including known lipophilicity and known retention time in a liquid chromatography column to create a learned association between lipophilicity and liquid chromatography retention time. A candidate small molecule having unknown lipophilicity and unknown retention time is applied to a liquid chromatography column. The retention time of the candidate small molecule in the liquid chromatography column is measured. The measured retention time in the liquid chromatography column is applied to the machine learning model to obtain lipophilicity for the candidate small molecule. One or more candidate small molecules having a lipophilicity value from approximately 1 to approximately 3 are selected from the machine learning model. The identified candidate small molecules are tested for pharmaceutical activity.

Abstract

A human body modelling method and apparatus and an electronic device. The method comprises: acquiring at least one human body image; extracting an original profile of a human body from the human body image; calculating a body surface profile of the human body according to the original profile; and constructing a three dimensional human body model according to the body surface profile. The establishment of a three dimensional human body model originates from two dimensional human body images, without using a human body scanner to scan a human body, which reduces the cost of establishing the three dimensional human body model. Moreover, there is no requirement for the position and dressing of a human body object, and the process of establishing the three dimensional human body model is more convenient.

Abstract

A method for forming a structural-strain sensor network on a structure is provided. The sensor network has plural nanocomposite sensing elements having high sensitivity, and can be quickly fabricated. The method comprises attaching a molding layer having openings onto the surface, and filling the openings with a coating material made of nanocomposite hybrid material. After immobilizing the coating material in the openings, the sensing elements are formed and the molding layer is removed. Electrical wires are formed on the surface such that two opposite electrodes are formed on each sensing element. The resistance between the two electrodes indicates a strain experienced. The sensor network finds applications in identifying a damaged location or an impact location on the structure for structural health monitoring. Voltage waveforms measured at the sensing elements are analyzed to estimate the damaged location or the impact location according to a guided-wave propagation model.

Abstract

A resistance-voltage (R-V) transformation system used in dynamic strain measurement for a structure is provided. The system has single-channel (SC) circuit units each for producing a voltage corresponding to a resistance of a sensing element of a structural-strain sensing network. Each SC circuit unit has a R-V transformation module for converting the resistance into the voltage, a band-pass filter module for filtering the R-V transformation module output after a direct-current bias therein is removed, and a high-gain amplification module for amplifying the filter output. The band-pass filter module is configured such that an unwanted low-frequency component induced by resistance drift of the sensing element is removed while allowing a guided-wave signal component to pass through. Particularly advantageous for the sensing network using nanocomposite sensing elements, the R-V transformation system is useful for a wide range of sensor resistance values, mitigating adverse effects of resistance drift, and enabling simplicity in wiring.

A spectacle lens can inhibit ametropia of the eyes and ensure full visibility. The spectacle lens comprises: first refraction areas and second refraction areas. Each first refraction area has a first refraction force that may be based on a prescription for correcting the ametropia of the eyes. Each second refraction area has a refraction force different from the first refraction force and may function to focus images on the positions except the retina of the eyes, to inhibit the development of the ametropia. Near the central part of the lens, the second refraction areas form a plurality of independent island-shaped areas, and the first refraction areas form the areas beyond the areas of the second refraction areas.

Abstract

The present invention discloses a current-source-output light-emitting-diode (LED) driver based on LCLC circuit to provide a constant output current regardless of variations in LED parameters. In the LCLC circuit, the number of additional capacitors is scalable with the number of LED strings for current balancing. Moreover, the input impedance of the improved LCLC circuit is designed to be resistive at the operating frequency to minimize reactive power. The conventional duty cycle control can easily incorporate zero-voltage-switching (ZVS).

Abstract

This invention provides a cyclically-coupled (CC-) quasi-cyclic (QC-) low-density parity-check (LDPC) code and its decoder architecture. The essence of the invention is to introduce the convolutional nature to a plurality of individual block codes internally so as to form a resultant block code with a prolonged code length while slightly increasing the hardware complexity in decoder realization. The CC-QC-LDPC code is formed by cyclically coupling a plurality of sub-codes each being a QC-LDPC code such that overlapping of some variable nodes between two consecutive sub-codes results. The decoder comprises plural sub-decoders each configured to decode the channel messages for one sub-code. The sub-decoders are arranged in a ring shape such that an individual sub-decoder is configured to communicate edge messages with two neighboring sub-decoders adjacent to said individual sub-decoder in the decoding of the channel messages. The sub-decoders are configured to operate concurrently for simultaneously decoding individual sub-codes.

Abstract

A system using a three-coil topology for wireless power transfer is disclosed. The system comprises a primary resonator coupled to a power source, a repeater resonator and a receiver resonator. The primary resonator has a primary coil, and the repeater resonator has a repeater coil adjacent to the primary coil. The repeater coil and the primary coil are separated by a distance selected, and the repeater coil is configured, to amplify a primary-coil current by inductively generating a repeater-coil current that is substantially greater than the primary-coil current. A magnetic field contributed from both the primary-coil current and the repeater-coil current is generated while the power source needs not provide a terminal voltage across the repeater coil, thereby discouraging occurrence of voltage stress at the power source. The receiver resonator has a receiver coil, which receives the magnetic field to inductively generate a receiver-coil current for feeding to a load.

Abstract

A triazole bridged flavonoid dimer compound library was efficiently constructed via the cycloaddition reaction of a series of flavonoid-containing azides (Az 1-15) and alkynes (Ac 1-17). These triazole bridged flavonoid dimers and their precursor alkyne- and azide-containing flavonoids were screened for their ability to modulate multidrug resistance (MDR) in P-gp-overexpressed cell line (LCC6MDR), MRP1-overexpressed cell line (2008/MRP1) and BCRP-overexpressed cell line (HEK293/R2 and MCF7-MX100). Generally, they displayed very promising MDR reversal activity against P-gp-, MRP1- and BCRP-mediated drug resistance. Moreover, they showed different levels of selectivity for various transporters. Overall, they can be divided into mono-selective, dual-selective and multi-selective modulators for the P-gp, MRP1 and BCRP transporters. The EC50 values for reversing paclitaxel resistance (141-340 nM) of LCC6MDR cells, DOX (78-590 nM) and vincristine (82-550 nM) resistance of 2008/MRP1 cells and topotecan resistance (0.9-135 nM) of HEK293/R2 and MCF7-MX100 cells were at nanomolar range. Importantly, a number of compounds displayed EC50 at or below 10 nM in BCRP-overexpressed cell lines, indicating that these bivalent triazoles more selectively inhibit BCRP transporter than the P-gp and MRP1 transporters. Most of the dimers are notably safe MDR chemosensitizers as indicated by their high therapeutic index values.

Abstract

A head-mountable EEG electrode-containing device is provided based on radially adjustable electrodes to fit the wearer's unique head size and shape. The head-mountable device with an electrode array positioned therein includes multiple head-mountable device sections that are interconnected by mechanical fasteners to facilitate sizing and positioning of the head-mountable device. An array of resilient sleeves is positioned within each head-mountable device section. Each resilient sleeve houses an individual electrode and is deformable for self-orienting. The deformation of the sleeve is such that a central axis passing through the individual electrode housed within the resilient sleeve is maintained in a position approximately normal to a plane tangential to a scalp portion positioned beneath that electrode.

Abstract

An optical fiber 200 with a high thermal resistance fiber Bragg grating (FBG) 130. Compared to existing FBG's, the invention provides greatly enhanced thermal stability, being stable up to 1200° C. The grating reflectivity and resonant wavelength are maintained for extended duration at high temperatures. The FBG is thus suitable in high temperature sensors. The high thermal resistance of the FBG is obtained in a method of pre-annealing the optical fiber 105 at high temperature prior to inscribing the FBG. The high thermal resistance is optionally enhanced in a post-FBG creation step of heat treating the optical fiber 105 and FBG.
