A method, human interface device, and computer program product that provide improved multilevel switching from each bioelectrical sensor with inclusion of switch filtering based on extraneous events (e.g., spasms). A biosignal is received from a sensor device by an electronic processor of a first electrode switch device. In response to determining that the amplitude of the signal has changed from less than a first switch range to greater than the first switch range and less than the second switch range, the electrode switch device communicates a first switch signal to control the human interface system. A switch control system for assistive devices enables reliable, single-switch operation of scanning user interfaces such as speech-generating devices. A controller executes a Leveraged Switch Machine (LSM) that transitions between step and select modes based on timed windows while classifying candidate activations as intended or erroneous using signal features and hysteresis. Erroneous activations place the device in a wait mode that requires a predefined unlock sequence before scanning resumes, reducing unintentional selections caused by spasms or noise. The controller further implements optional multi-switch sequencing that requires an ordered pattern of activations before issuing a control message, and switch harmonization that normalizes mixed switch types (e.g., press- vs release-triggered) to a consistent activation event. In some embodiments the controller interfaces by HID over wired or wireless links and supports configurable timers and thresholds to accommodate user abilities, thereby improving throughput, accuracy, and safety for users with limited motor control.
