Abstract

Apparatus for use with a tool assembly in operations of tightening or loosening threaded fasteners about an axis are disclosed, and in one example includes: a lower clamp assembly; an upper clamp assembly; a reaction adaptor assembly; and a spring assembly formed between the upper clamp assembly and the reaction adaptor assembly. Advantageously an operator can tighten or loosen all fasteners without having to change the initial setup of the apparatus. The lower clamp assembly eliminates the need for extra operators and heavy and bulky equipment to hold the apparatus near the fasteners. The upper clamp allows the operator to rotate the apparatus around with ease. The spring assembly stabilizes and eases vertical height adjustment of the apparatus. The reaction adaptor substantially negates reaction turning forces of the tool assembly during the operations. Drive knobs provide easy alignment of and quick and safe mounting of the tool assembly on the fasteners. Bolting operations about an axis are completed faster, cheaper and with little or no risk of operator injury.

Abstract

An apparatus for use with a hydraulically driven torque tool for tightening or loosening threaded fasteners including an internal energy storage assembly for automatic piston return is disclosed. In one embodiment, the internal energy storage assembly operates by a pneumatic fluid which compresses during an advance stroke of a piston assembly of the tool and expands during a retract stroke of the piston assembly of the tool. In such embodiment, the internal energy storage assembly includes a hydraulic assembly and a pneumatic assembly. Advantageously it: has a higher energy density than a mechanical spring; does not have geometric limitations as the pneumatic fluid may be contained in internal volume available of the tool; and increases bolting speeds as the return stroke no longer requires hydraulic fluid to force back the piston; has reduced tool size by elimination of one hydraulic connection and location of the remaining connection that improves accessibility of the tool into the work space; requires a simplified hydraulic pump and controls; and increases bolting system reliability.

Abstract

Torque tools of the present invention include: a hydraulic cylinder assembly (40); a drive assembly (600, 60); a flexible linkage connection, or force transfer, assembly formed between the hydraulic cylinder assembly (40) and the drive assembly (600, 60); all of which is formed within or adjacent to a housing assembly (70). They provide large, accurate torque for limited clearance applications. The flexible linkage connection assembly (50) includes a rocker arm assembly (51) and a chain link-pin assembly. The flexible linkage connection assembly (50) maintains the relationship between the line of action of the linear force generated on the rocker arm assembly (51) by the hydraulic piston assembly (44, 50)(ies) and rotary force generated on the ratchet drive socket (9) by the rocker arm assembly (51) via the chain link-pin assembly at close to the optimized position throughout the entire travel of a drive plate assembly (61) of the drive assembly (600, 60). The resulting efficiency increase of converting linear force and displacement into rotary torque and angular displacement allows for generation of large and accurate torque in minimal cross-sections necessary to access hidden, limited clearance and/or inaccessible threaded fasteners.

Abstract

This application discloses an apparatus 100 for use with an electrically, hydraulically and/or pneumatically driven torque tool for tightening or loosening inaccessible threaded fasteners including a drive extension assembly 110, a reaction assembly 120 and a socket assembly 130. Advantageously the present invention uses an external reaction member which holds on to two (2) or four (4) adjacent studs while turning a fastener with an extended drive ball and socket joint connection. It more efficiently distributes/reduces the side loads and system strains from the reaction forces on the bolts by bringing the reaction point much closer to the fastener being turned. It allows for a plurality of fastener approach angles and is adaptable to a plurality of fastener obstructions. It's relatively lightweight, easy to maneuver from fastener to fastener and overall user friendly.

Abstract

According to a first aspect of the invention we provide an automatic reaction pawl-assembly (“ARPA”) which includes; a shaft assembly; a pawl fixed rotatably relative to the shaft assembly; and a torsion lever torsionally coupled with the paw) about the shaft assembly. Advantageously the ARPA enhances belting efficiency, increases torque accuracy and maximizes operator safety. Torsion springs of the shaft assembly overcome a housing spring and automatically disengage the pawl from a ratchet wheel. The pawl releases without advancing the fastener, touching the tool or raising the hydraulic pressure beyond an intended torque value. This allows for hands free operation of one or more tools. During SWULTORC® the operator no longer needs to determine which tool; is locked on to its fastener.

Abstract

According to a first aspect of the invention we provide a low clearance face tooth ratchet assembly for link drive means of hydraulic torque tools. The face tooth ratchet assembly includes: a drive plate having piston engagement means at a first end and a machined face gear with radial serrations at a second end; and a ratchet drive having a machined face gear with corresponding radial serrations at a first end and a threaded fastener engagement means at a second end. Advantageously the low clearance face tooth ratchet assembly minimizes volume and mass of the tool. Only one drive plate is necessary which is tapered from a first end to a second end. Further, side plates of the link drive means are tapered from a first end to a second end. Such geometry minimizes the width of portions of the link drive means making the second end, adjacent the threaded fastener engagement means, substantially thinner than the first end, adjacent the piston engagement means. Higher torque values are transferred in a smaller enclosure via only two parts. Notably no drive and/or reaction pawl is necessary as the teeth of the drive plate and the ratchet drive achieve full facial engagement. The design of the connection coupling is backlash-free, maximizes tool safety, minimizes risk of failures/fatigue from wear, bending, scuffing and cracking, and is suitable for changing forces.

According to a first aspect of the invention we provide an automatic reaction pawl- assembly ("ARPA") which includes; a shaft assembly; a pawl fixed rotatably relative to the shaft assembly; and a torsion lever torsionally coupled with the paw) about the shaft assembly. Advantageously the ARPA enhances belting efficiency, increases torque accuracy and maximises operator safety. During SWULTORC(R) the operator no longer needs to determine which tool; is locked on to its fastener.

Abstract

The invention relates to a multifunctional hydraulic assembly for driving hydraulic tools, in order to meet as many requirements as possible for different system applications. This is achieved via an efficient cooling- and filtering concept, and via the modular cascadability of the motor and of the electronics, or the possibility to add optional additional reservoirs via intake lines or communicating systems. In order to meet industry requirements in terms of data management, data access, and data update, it is possible to control, update and bi-directionally exchange data in the assembly using external central servers or a Cloud. By means of an online portal as a Cloud service, program data and/or process data and/or system data of the hydraulic assembly are saved and analysed for the purposes of process evaluation and made available for download or via a web browser to an authorised group of people. A further Cloud service automatically informs the users and clients when maintenance of the equipment or the system is due or necessary. In addition, it is possible to integrate all the system accessories used, via the Cloud, for the inclusion of the maintenance intervals, such that the whole system is flexible and the multifunctional use of the hydraulic assembly in the system group is achieved.

Abstract

An offset drive link assembly for transmission and multiplication of torque from a power tool for tightening or loosening a threaded fastener includes: a drive force input assembly; a drive force output assembly; and a reaction force assembly. Advantageously the offset drive link assembly: allows access to previously unreachable fasteners due to, for example protruding threads, limited clearances and obstructions; makes practical previously unusable devices driven either electrically, hydraulically, manually and/or pneumatically; makes feasible previously unusable advanced materials, such as, for example aircraft-grade aluminum; creates modular components, such as, for example hex-reducing and -increasing drive bushings, male to female drive adaptors, to meet bolting application characteristics; yields accurate and customizable torque multiplication; tames drive force and reaction force application; overcomes corrosion, thread and facial deformation; avoids bolt thread galling; nullifies side load; ensures balanced bolt load for symmetrical joint compression; simplifies link and tool use; minimizes risk of operator error; and maximizes bolting safety.

Abstract

Apparatus for use with a tool assembly in operations of tightening or loosening threaded fasteners (230) about an axis are disclosed, and in one example includes: a lower clamp assembly (110); an upper clamp assembly (120); a reaction adaptor assembly (130); and a spring assembly (140) formed between the upper clamp assembly and the reaction adaptor assembly. Advantageously an operator can tighten or loosen ail fasteners without having to change the initial setup of the apparatus. Drive knobs (312, 322) provide easy alignment of and quick and safe mounting of the tool assembly (310, 320) on the fasteners. Bolting operations about an axis are completed faster, cheaper and with little or no risk of operator injury.

Abstract

An eccentric gear mechanism, comprising an input drive having a centric portion rotated about an axis and an eccentric portion; a movable inner ring gear having outer circumferential gear teeth, so that said centric portion and said eccentric portion of said input drive turn in one direction against said movable inner ring gear, said inner ring gear being configured in such a way that it allows an eccentric movement by said inner ring gear and transfers a given turning force derived by said inner ring gear in an opposite direction to said one direction; an outer ring gear having inner circumferential gear teeth partially engaged with said outer circumferential gear teeth of said inner ring gear, so that when said given turning force is derived by said inner gear ring in said opposite direction said outer ring gear rotates around said axis, and said outer ring gear transfers said given turning force in said one direction outwardly along said axis.
