Abstract

A system and method of in vivo testing for recently viable dental cellular debris is disclosed herein. The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for detecting for the presence of cellular debris from an endodontic cavity and other areas of a tooth by testing for the presence of cellular debris such as Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). The sample is collected from a tooth or endodontic cavity and combined with a chemical indicator which causes a detectable change in the indicator that is sensed by a luminescence reader. The level of ATP in a sample corresponds to the level of contamination still present in the tooth or endodontic cavity and can be used to determine what additional steps, if any, are necessary in order to clean and disinfect the tooth. This method of sampling the tooth or endodontic cavity allows for a rapid, chair-side, affordable, and easy to use method to determine the level of cellular contamination.

Abstract

An applicator for a syringe is provided that includes a hub configured to be disposed at least partially within a nozzle of the syringe and defining a fluid passage therethrough, with one or barbs on the hub that frictionally and sealingly engage an interior of the nozzle in a manner minimizing void space associated with waste of deliverable material, and an applicator tip extending distally from the hub. The barb(s) may have varying diameters in order to enable the applicator to be engaged and utilized with syringes having different diameter nozzles. Further the fluid passage through the hub and applicator tip is dimensioned to minimize the volume of material that is retained within the applicator after use, thereby increasing the volume of material that can dispensed from the syringe for use in a procedure or procedures and minimize waste.

Abstract

In the present invention, a dripless syringe is provided that includes a barrel having fluid therein, the barrel defining an open end and a nozzle opposite the open end, a plunger disposed at least partially within the open end and including a body and a push pin extending from one end of the body, a seal plate slidably mounted to the push pin and a bung disposed over the seal plate and the push pin and sealingly engaged between the seal plate and the barrel the seal plate enables the bung to remain in sealing engagement with the interior of the barrel while the plunger is moved within the barrel. Further, when pressure is removed to cease dispensing of the fluid, the pin allows the bung to retract and provide a negative pressure on the fluid to prevent drips of fluid from leaking out of the nozzle.

Abstract

Methods and kits for assessing the presence of, and for detecting cancer, notably oral cancer, are disclosed. Such methods and kits use one or more lectins operably linked to a fluorophore, wherein the lectin binds differentially to cancerous and non-cancerous tissues, and wherein the fluorophore facilitates visualizing the differential binding. The lectins are applied to the oral mucosa of a subject, the fluorophore is exposed to light, and cancerous regions of the mucosa are visualized. In certain embodiments, the lectin specifically binds to one or more of a β-galactoside, an &alρha;- or β-N-acetylglucosamine, or a sialic acid moiety. Methods involving avidin or an antibody labelled with a fluorophore are also disclosed.
