Abstract

A thermostatic controller comprises a sealed container containing a fluid like mono-ethylene glycol and water and wherein the sealed container comprises a surface of a metal like copper in contact with the fluid, the metal of said surface being a metal which acts as a catalyst to affect adversely the rate of thermal decomposition of glycol, said fluid further comprising a complexing heterocyclic compound like benzotriazole which serves to prevent or inhibit the catalytic action of the metal surface on the thermal decomposition of the glycol by forming a stable complex with said metal surface.

Abstract

A method and apparatus for control of the heating and air conditioning systems of an environmental space employs means to detect when an air conditioning system is in a cooling mode and to send an inhibit command to the heating system when the air conditioning system is in a cooling mode thereby to inhibit the heating system from providing heat into the environmental space.

Abstract

For the inhibition of ice formation in a pipe such as the condensate-pipe (13) of a gas fired boiler (11), air at a temperature above the temperature at the pipe outlet (17) is introduced (21) into the pipe and forced to flow through the pipe in a direction towards the pipe outlet. A temperature sensor may be provided in the vicinity of the pipe outlet to enable the flow of air through the pipe to be confined to periods when the sensed temperature is below a pre-determined temperature.

Abstract

For the inhibition of ice formation in a pipe such as the condensate pipe which is exposed to a low ambient temperature there is provided an electrically powered fan (28) and an electrically powered heater (29). The fan and heater are operated to provide a forced flow of heated air at a temperature above said ambient temperature and the heated air is introduced (21) into said pipe to flow in a direction towards the pipe outlet.

Abstract

A thermostat for controlling a heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system based an audible warning signal is provided. The thermostat comprises a microphone and an electronic circuit. The microphone senses the audible warning signal and generates an electrical signal corresponding to the audible warning signal. The electronic circuit is operably coupled to the microphone. The electronic circuit instructs the HVAC system according to the electrical signal. As such, the HVAC system is controlled based upon the audible warning signal.

Abstract

An electricity demand limiting system for limiting the electricity consumption of at least one resistive load device. The demand limiting system includes a consumption controller, such as a triac-based circuit, associated with the resistive load device that is operable to infinitely vary the amount of electricity being consumed by the load device. The consumption control device is in operative communication with a load controller such that the load controller can generate a control signal to affect the operation of the consumption control circuit. The load controller can receive input signals from sensors monitoring the electricity delivery system or from the premise electricity meter. Further, the load controller can receive external inputs from a third party that determine the operation of the load controller in limiting the electricity demands of the resistive load device.

Abstract

A communicating environmental control system for a dwelling or building is provided. The environmental control system is intended for use in a dwelling which may be unoccupied for a long period of time, e.g., months. The control system operates in an economy mode to prevent damage to the dwelling and its contents by avoiding condensation of moisture within the dwelling. At the same time, the control system minimizes operating costs by running more when energy costs are lower and running less when energy costs are higher. The control system switches to a comfort mode when the dwelling occupants return. The control system is in communication with a remote owner, a remote utility, or a remote service provider, or more than one of these, through the Internet or other communication system.
