Abstract

Conventional methods for measuring carotenoids are HPLC based approaches which are cumbersome, expensive and not readily accessible. Moreover, these methods cannot be applied when only a small amount of biological sample is available from non-invasive procedures such as the collection of material from the surface of skin or from swabs. The present inventors have overcome a number of technical difficulties to successfully raise for the first time antibodies against carotenoids, particularly against carotenes such as lycopene or xanthophylls such as lutein. Hence, the present invention provides such antibodies against carotenoids, as well as assays for carotenoids employing such antibodies. Given the increasing recognition of the importance of carotenoids, the successful provision of such antibodies and assays allows for quicker, cheaper and more accessible measurement of carotenoids, including in the diagnosis and help of subjects with carotenoid deficiency. Moreover, availability of antibodies against carotenoids, naturally occurring molecules, provides an opportunity to create a range of new therapeutic vehicles not only to boost carotenoid transport to cells and tissues but for targeted delivery of pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and other agents.

Abstract

This invention relates to the incorporation of bioactive cargo molecules into particles with carotenoids, such as lycopene. The incorporation of a cargo molecule into a carotenoid particle may for example increase the bioavailability of the cargo molecule in the bloodstream compared to other delivery systems. Carotenoid particles as described herein may be useful in the formulation of therapeutic and nutritional compounds for oral administration to individuals.
