Abstract

A system for the therapeutic treatment of joints comprising a composite material comprising a biodegradable polymer matrix and a plurality of piezoelectric particles adapted to generate local electric charges in response to an external stimulation made by means of ultrasound, said plurality of piezoelectric particles being dispersed in the matrix. The composite material also comprises a plurality of stamina cells dispersed in the biodegradable polymer matrix and a plurality of carbon-based particles. The system also comprises a releasing device, arranged to deposit the composite material in a joint cavity at predetermined areas of the cartilage, and a stimulator device arranged to emit ultrasound at a predetermined frequency, a predetermined intensity and for a predetermined time of application, in such a way that, when the device is located near a joint wherein the composite material has been deposited, said ultrasound stimulate the plurality of piezoelectric particles.

Abstract

The invention relates to an articulated orthosis (1,1') comprising a first shell (2,2') to be associated to a foot (20,20'), a second shell (3,3') to be associated to a leg (30,30'), and a pair of joints (10,10',10",10"'); each joint (10,10',10",10"') in turn comprises a first inner plate (4,4',4",4"') integral with the first shell (2,2') on the opposite side to the foot (20,20'), a second outer plate (5,5',5",5"') integral with the second shell (3,3') on the opposite side to the leg (30,30') and provided with a hole (50,50',50",50"'), a spacer (6,6',6",6"'), a threaded counter-plate (7,7',7",7'"), and a connecting pin (8,8',8",8"') integral with the first inner plate (4,4',4",4"') and whose head is in abutment on the first shell (2,2') on the side opposite to the first inner plate (4,4',4",4"'), wherein the hole (50,50',50",50"') of the second outer plate (5,5',5",5"') has a diameter greater than the diameter of the spacer (6,6',6",6"') to obtain a mutual radial clearance, and wherein the spacer (6,6',6",6"') passes through the hole (50,50',50",50"') of the second outer plate (5,5',5",5"') and is arranged in contact with the first inner plate (4,4',4",4"') and with the threaded counter-plate (7,7' ',7" ',7'"), and wherein the distance between the outer surface (40) of the first plate (4,4',4",4"') and the inner surface (70) of the threaded counter-plate (7,7', 7", 7"') is determined by the length of the spacer (6,6',6",6"') and is greater than the thickness of the second outer plate (5,5',5",5"') to obtain a mutual axial clearance, so that the pair of said joints (10,10',10",10"') has the axes of the connecting pins (8,8',8",8"') aligned with each other and allows the first shell (2,2') and the second shell (3,3') to perform a relative movement with six degrees of freedom consisting in two independent translations in the sagittal plane, a translation in the mediolateral direction, a rotation in the sagittal plane with respect to a mediolateral axis, a rotation in the frontal plane with respect to an anterior-posterior axis and a rotation in the transverse plane with respect to a longitudinal axis, so that the axis of rotation of the pair of joints (10,10',10",10"') is floating around the anatomical center of a user's anatomical joint and the articulated orthosis (1,1') follows the natural kinematics of the user's anatomical joint.

Abstract

A method of treatment of connective tissue includes the steps of providing a biological tissue or organ, coating the tissue or organ with an enzymatic solution capable of phagocytizing at least partly fibroblasts, macrophages, mast cells and other cells responsible for immune and rejection reactions in homologous and heterologous transplantations. The biological tissue or organ, after the treatment with the enzymatic solution is irradiated with ionizing electromagnetic radiations in order to obtain an acellular tissue which maintains its own extracellular matrix unchanged. Preferably, such radiations are gamma radiations having a frequency between 1019 and 1022 Hz, beta radiations or mixtures thereof.

Abstract

A process for controlling transfusions of blood components, comprising: associating a first transponder (10) with a patient; providing a bag (30) for containing a blood component intended for that patient, said bag (30) comprising a second transponder (40); detecting the UID code of the first transponder (10) and storing it into a predetermined memory area (41a) of the second transponder (40); before giving said patient the transfusion of that blood component, performing the following steps: carrying out a first detection for detecting the UID code of the first transponder (10), carrying out a second detection for detecting the contents of the predetermined memory area (41a) of the second transponder (40), checking whether the results of said first and second comparisons are identical. Also described is a system (1) for putting said method into practice.

Abstract

The present invention refers to a porous composite material, wherein at least one interdispersed biopolymer is present, with a calcium-phosphate mineral component comprising from 50 w/% to 95 w/% of α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP, α-Ca3 (PO4) 2) and from 5 w/% to 50 w/% of octacalcium phosphate (OCP, Ca8H2(PO4)6-5H2O), to the total weight of the mineral component. Such combination of α-TCP and OCP allows an in vivo faster resorption rate and thereby a faster formation of new bone tissue having a low cristallinity mineral component with nanocrystal structure, features very similar to those of biological apatites. This porous composite material may find application as bone and/or osteal- chart ilagineous substitute (scaffold) and in producing tissue engineering devices.
