Abstract

A hard-shell suitcase comprising a base portion and a lid portion connected to the base portion by a hinge. In the closed position an edge of the lid portion is adjacent to the edge of the first concave shell in the first plane. The hard-shell suitcase further comprises first, second, third and fourth wheel assemblies attached to the exterior of the base portion in a second plane parallel to the first plane. Each wheel assembly is configured to rotate about a first axis parallel to the second plane and about a second axis perpendicular to the first axis. The hard-shell suitcase further comprises a retractable handle configured to be movable in a direction parallel to the first plane from a retracted position to an extended position and from the extended position to the retracted position. Generally suitcases, or other articles of luggage, can be divided into ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ constructions. Both kinds of cases have their advantages, but each has its own disadvantages. An article of luggage is disclosed comprising a first portion and a second portion connected by a hinge arrangement, each of the first and second portions including a lower structural assembly (6,10) comprising a shell and an upper structural assembly (8,12) comprising a framework provided with a covering (50), the lower structural assembly and the upper structural assembly being secured together by stitching. A method of moulding a shell for an article of luggage is disclosed comprising the steps of providing a plastics sheet (2) comprising an upper layer (4) and a lower layer (6), the upper layer (4) and the lower layer (6) being connected to one another by a plurality of intermediate strips (10); heating the plastics sheet; introducing a mould (26) to the heated plastics sheet; vacuum moulding the heated plastics sheet to the mould (26) to form a plastics shell; withdrawing mould (26) from the formed plastics shell; and trimming the formed plastics shell form the heated plastics sheet. Among other advantages the shells formed in this way use less plastic than conventional moulded sheet or sheets, and also have more flexibility and impact resistance than known injection moulded or vacuumed formed shells.
