The present disclosure pertains to a process for the preparation of graphite-like carbon material from melanoidins comprising: a. extracting melanoidins from food products waste material, isolating the melanoidin and b. Pyrolyze the extracted and isolated melanoidin at a temperature of 500 to 1200°C, at inert atmosphere. The resulting material is used as hard carbon material and as a precursor for graphite, graphene, graphene carbon quantum dot material, carbon nanotubes, graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots, graphene oxide or combinations thereof.

Abstract

The present disclosure is directed to a storage device comprising coffee melanoidin, preferably extracted from spent coffee grounds. Owing to the abundance presence of polycondensates with polyelectrolyte/polyampholite behaviour with a polyphenol or quinone-based aromatic core, the melanoidin has large redox capacities making it suitable for use in electrical energy storage devices. A further advantage of using spent coffee grounds is that this material which has been considered waste material in the past is now upcycled to a useful material which even helps to replace relatively scarce raw materials such as for instance transition metal salts for electrolytes, and transition metals, porous carbon and graphite for electrodes.

The present application is directed to a cosmetic composition comprising melanoidins, wherein said melanoidins are characterized by having a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of from 200 daltons to 300kDa, preferably from 1 to 300 kDa and more preferably from 1 to 100 kDa, for example from 10 to 100 kDa. The melanoidins are obtainable or are obtained by a process comprising the steps of: a) providing a particulate foodstuff which comprises melanoidins; b) treating said particulate foodstuff with an aqueous extractant solution having a pH greater than 7 to extract melanoidins as solute in the aqueous phase; c) physically separating said aqueous phase from the residual treated particulate foodstuff; d) fractionating the dispersed or dissolved components of said aqueous phase on the basis of molecular weight; and, e) dehydrating said fractionated aqueous phase to obtain at least one solid melanoidin fraction therefrom.

Abstract

A system (1, 50) to store and preserve biomass, comprises a bin (2) with an opening (3) for receipt of biomass, an openable lid (4) for the bin configured to hermetically seal the opening when closed, a biopreservative dispenser (12, 15, 18, 51, 53) configured to dispense biopreservative on the biomass inside the bin upon actuation, and an actuation system for the biopreservative dispenser configured to automatically actuate the biopreservative dispenser. The actuation system is configured to automatically actuate the biopreservative dispenser at pre-defined time intervals, every time the lid is closed, or both. The biopreservative dispenser may comprises an ozone generator (51) and dispensing means (53) for the oxone configured to dispense ozone into the bin. The ozone generator and dispensing means are generally mounted to an internal surface of the lid (4).
