Abstract

A binder comprising a polymeric binder comprising the products of a carbohydrate reactant and nucleophile is disclosed. The binder is useful for consolidating loosely assembled matter, such as fibers. Fibrous products comprising fibers in contact with a carbohydrate reactant and a nucleophile are also disclosed. The binder composition may be cured to yield a fibrous product comprising fibers bound by a cross-linked polymer. Further disclosed are methods for binding fibers with the carbohydrate reactant and polyamine based binder.

Unique insulation articles including corrosion inhibitors and methods of producing the same are disclosed. One exemplary embodiment is an article of manufacture comprising an insulation mat comprising a cured combination of a plurality of randomly oriented fibers and a binder, the insulation mat extending between a first surface and a second surface, a veil attached to the first surface, the veil structured to inhibit physical movement of the cured combination through the veil, a metal sheet attached to the second surface by a water-containing adhesive contacting the metal sheet and the second surface, and a corrosion inhibitor composition deposited on the cured combination of the insulation mat, the corrosion inhibitor composition being effective to modify toward neutral a pH of the cured combination in contact with water from the water-containing adhesive.

Abstract

A method of using an amine compound including at least one amine functional group, wherein the amine functional group(s) comprise primary and/or secondary amine functional groups, to reduce the level of furfural and/or hydroxymethylfurfural in a carbohydrate-based binder or binder composition and/or escaping in the course of preparation, cross-linking and/or curing of carbohydrate-based binders, is provided. The carbohydrate-based binder is obtained from a carbohydrate-based binder composition comprising a carbohydrate component, a cross-linker and optionally one or more reaction products of the carbohydrate component and the cross-linker, wherein the cross-linker is selected from the group consisting of ammonium salts of inorganic acid, carboxylic acids, salts, ester and anhydride derivatives thereof, and combinations thereof.

Abstract

A binder comprising the products of a carbohydrate reactant and polyamine is disclosed. The binder is useful for consolidating loosely assembled matter, such as fibers. Uncured fibrous products comprising fibers in contact with a carbohydrate reactant and a polyamine are also disclosed. The binder composition may be cured to yield a fibrous product comprising fibers bound by a cross-linked polymer. Further disclosed are methods for binding fibers with the carbohydrate reactant and polyamine based binder.

Abstract

A fiber product is described which includes fibers, a binder and a temperature control additive. The fiber product has properties that make it useful for a variety of applications. The fibers may be glass fibers and the product may be a fiberglass insulation product for use in buildings, vehicles, or other structures for acoustic and/or thermal insulation. The fibers may be cellulosic fibers and the product may be a wood board product. The temperature control additive is incorporated into the uncured fiber product to prevent deleterious self-heating during or after binder curing. The temperature control additive undergoes an endothermic process that consumes at least a portion of the energy generated during the exothermic curing reaction.

Abstract

A binder based predominantly on molasses which incorporates both polymeric and monomeric polycarboxylic acid components to form a composite including both melanoidin and polyester polymeric structures. The binder incorporates the chemical profile of molasses with a mixture of polycarboxylic acids which combines to form a strong and weatherable binder composition which may be used to bind loosely or non-assembled matter.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a melter assembly (1) for melting solid raw batch material, which comprises a submerged combustion melter section (3) and an afterburner section (5), wherein the submerged combustion melter section is designed to contain the melt bath (4) at a maximum melt level (4') and comprises at least one submerged combustion burner (21) and a melt outlet (9), and wherein the afterburner section (5) is designed as a space contiguous with, and in continuity of, the internal space defined by the submerged combustion melter section (3), and arranged over the maximum melt level (4') of the submerged combustion melter section (3). The afterburner section (5) is dimensioned such that the gases escaping from the melt bath (4) remain for at least 2 seconds at a temperature of at least 850 °C in said afterburner section (5), prior to being evacuated to the environment. The invention also relates to a process making use of such melter assembly (1).
