A method of selecting a treatment process for removing defects from a surface of a buffed casing of a pneumatic tyre, the method comprising: capturing, by using a profilometer, three-dimensional profile data of at least one portion of the surface of the casing; processing the profile data to determine a total number of defects on the at least one portion of the surface; determining whether the total number of defects is below a defect number threshold and, conditional on determining that the total number of defects is below a defect number threshold: applying a first treatment process to the surface of the buffed casing; acquiring image data of an equatorial surface of the casing; processing the image data of the equatorial surface of the casing to detect defects; and selecting a further treatment process from a set of treatment processes based on the detected defects on the equatorial surface of the casing.

This helps to reduce the noise produced by impact of the shoulder blocks (20A, 21A) on the road surface.
A pneumatic tyre (1) has a tread band (2) for engaging a road surface at a tread area of the tyre. The tread band (2) comprises two shoulder areas (10, 11) at the axially outer ends of the tread band (2); a central area (15) identified between the shoulder areas (10, 11); shoulder blocks (20A, 21A) arranged along shoulder circumferential ribs (20, 21); and central blocks (25A, 26A, 27A) arranged along central circumferential ribs (25, 26, 27).
