Abstract

A method of storing data in a distributed manner based on data compression ratio prediction, and a mass storage device and system using the method are disclosed. The device includes a compression ratio predicting unit, a compressing unit, and a control unit. When an address and first unit sized data are received, the compression ratio predicting unit estimates the predicted compression ratio of the first unit sized data. The compressing unit generates compressed data. The control unit calculates the benefit of compression based on at least the estimated predicted compression ratio, stores the compressed data in a first storage area if the calculated benefit of compression is higher than a predetermined benefit threshold value, and stores the first unit sized data in the second storage area if the calculated benefit of compression is equal to or lower than the predetermined benefit threshold value.

Abstract

A portable distance measuring device that works by spanning separately targeted endpoints is described. The device contains a laser distance measuring component and sensing components that track changes in position and orientation of the device, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes. Distance is measured by pointing the laser at an endpoint and measuring the distance to it. Once this measurement is confirmed, the device can be moved to a different vantage location to measure a second endpoint with the laser. The orientation and position of the device for the second distance measurement relative to the first measurement are calculated by the position and orientation sensors. Together these values are sufficient to calculate the distance spanning the endpoints. This calculation is performed by a computer contained in the device and the distance displayed to the user.

Abstract

Specifying the hosting WLAN switch controller for a WiFi VPN connection from a public hotspot should not require managing separate name spaces for switch controllers and SSIDs. Instead, identification of the controller should be done within the standard 802.11 protocol using SSIDs that resolve to IP addresses. Users therefore need only manage a single SSID name space for both WiFi VPN connections and local wireless connections.

Abstract

A method (400) for online collaboration among users at different locations sharing common motion imagery (302). The method involves storing data defining the motion imagery (MID) in a data store (104) associated with a motion image server (MIS) and communicating the motion imagery to a first client device (FCD). The method also involves generating at the FCD (106) an annotation (304, . . . , 308) capable of being displayed together with the motion imagery. The annotation is defined by metadata distinct from the MID and containing information to associate the metadata with the motion imagery. The method further involves communicating the metadata to the MIS (102), storing the metadata in the data store, and communicating the MID and the metadata to a second client device (SCD). The SCD (108) selectively displays the annotation together with the motion imagery in response to an input command of a second user.

Abstract

A system and method for a highly interactive style of speech-to-speech translation is provided. The interactive procedures enable a user to recognize, and if necessary correct, errors in both speech recognition and translation, thus providing robust translation output than would otherwise be possible. The interactive techniques for monitoring and correcting word ambiguity errors during automatic translation, search, or other natural language processing tasks depend upon the correlation of Meaning Cues and their alignment with, or mapping into, the word senses of third party lexical resources, such as those of a machine translation or search lexicon. This correlation and mapping can be carried out through the creation and use of a database of Meaning Cues, i.e., SELECT. Embodiments described above permit the intelligent building and application of this database, which can be viewed as an interlingua, or language-neutral set of meaning symbols, applicable for many purposes. Innovative techniques for interactive correction of server-based speech recognition are also described.

Abstract

A system and method are disclosed for conducting searches and generating routes to selected points of interest using a wireless client-server (WCS) navigator. A method includes the step of requesting, at a mobile unit, information about one or more locations meeting certain criteria. Locations meeting the criteria are displayed on the display screen at the location of the user and, if a location is selected, a route to include the selected location is automatically generated. Guidance regarding how to travel to the selected location may also be provided. If the user is already en route to a destination when a route to a selected location is requested, the navigator may generate a route that includes both the original destination and the selected new location. If the user is already en route to a destination when locations matching criteria are requested, along with the locations displayed the navigator may provide information to the user as to the total travel time or distance of a route passing through the original destination and a new location or the additional travel time or distance in comparison to the original route. The method may further include the step of requesting information about a class of locations such as restaurants.

Abstract

A wireless client-server (WCS) navigator provides routes optimized for travel time based on traffic flow rate and incident data, inexpensively and in a timely manner. A server, having a database of geographical information including road segments at a server, receives information representing traffic flow rates or traffic incidents along the road segments. This allows a route to be generated that is optimized to minimize travel time along the road segments based upon the traffic flow rates or traffic incidents. The route is then transmitted to a mobile client. Typically, though not necessarily, the route is generated in response to a request from a mobile client. Some travel time estimates may be based on historical traffic flow rate data or speed limit data rather than current information. Traffic flow rate or traffic incident data associated with the transmitted route may be transmitted to a client along with the route. The traffic flow rate information may be used to create estimates of time of arrival at a destination or points along the route. The points along the route may include, for example, points at which a maneuver such as a turn should be performed in conjunction with the route.

Abstract

Apparatus and methods are directed to the use and customization of user interfaces associated with vehicle navigation systems, including “skins,” selection of context for clarification, and autocompletion functions. The navigator may be a wireless client server navigation system comprising mobile clients used for requesting and receiving guidance from a central server that houses databases of geographical information. Customization may include images, icons, controls, menus, colors, symbols, or shapes that are added, removed, or moved on the display. Options may be selected using equipment external to the navigation system. If a word, or phrase is not understood, the method proceeds with the steps of: searching a database for potential matching letters, words, or phrases; querying the user with the potential matching words, or phrases; and, if the user selects one of the potential matching words, or phrases: performing an operating associated with the potential matching words, or phrases.

Abstract

Methods and apparatus to reduce data transmission in a wireless client-server navigation system. A request for data representative of a map-related feature is received at a server from a mobile client. Data describing the feature is obtained in the form of coordinates of line segments. An operation is performed on the data to generate data representative of the feature in a data-reduced format, and the reduced data is forwarded to the client. The operation responsible for producing the data-reduced format includes the steps of: receiving map data; partitioning the map into a plurality of tiles; designating a reference point within each tile; representing the feature in the form of offsets from the reference points; and wherein the data-reduced format is based upon the reference points and offsets. The embodiment may also include sending precalculated turn instruction to the client rather than sending data necessary to generate turn instructions.

Abstract

Methods and apparatus for ensuring the computer security of users of a computer system are described. A user is allocated a security grading relating to how secure their computer system (2) is, for instance in terms of anti-virus software, firewalls and up-to-date security patches. Methods and apparatus (10, 12) for providing a security grading of a user's computer system are also disclosed. Users without a security grading or with low level security grading may then be accorded only basic access to the data or functionality of another computer system (8), for instance such as on-line banking services or the like. This ensures therefore that those users that take responsibility for their own security are allowed full access without undue security protocols whereas users without proper security do not have so much access.

Abstract

A navigation system and method uses loops as opposed to existing search techniques to more expeditiously find routes on a map from a starting point to a destination. Roads on a map are traced to form one or more continuous loops. Information regarding the loops is stored for future reference. A starting point and at least one destination are specified, and loops that connect the loops containing the starting point and destination are determined. A route is then formulated from the starting point to the destination using road segments or intersections where the identified loops are mutually contiguous. A list is generated including the loops and the road segments associated therewith. The road segments of an initial loop are examined and, if a road segment or intersection common to a next loop is identified, the road segments of that loop are examined, and so on, until a route from the starting point to the destination is found. Alternatively the route may be formulated by searching for routes along the roads that form one or more continuous loops connecting the starting point and the destination. Various speed-up algorithms and/or heuristics may be applied to the route formulation. The method finds application is many fields of endeavor, including wireless client-server navigation; embedded/dedicated automotive navigation, and logistics control, to name a few.

Abstract

There is provided a hierarchical shadow detection system for color aerial images. The system performs well with highly complex images as well as images having different brightness and illumination conditions. The system consists of two hierarchical levels of processing. The first level involves, pixel level classification, through modeling the image as a reliable lattice and then maximizing the lattice reliability using the EM algorithm. Next, region level verification, through further exploiting the domain knowledge is performed. Further analysis show that the MRF model based segmentation is a special case of the pixel level classification model. A quantitative comparison of the system and a state-of-the-art shadow detection algorithm clearly indicates that the new system is highly effective in detecting shadow regions in an image under different illumination and brightness conditions.

Abstract

A remote monitor module for power initialization of a computer system includes a monitor logic and a BMC (Baseboard Management Controller). The monitor logic is in circuit connection with a power-up sequence controller and several basic voltage domains on a system board of the computer system. The monitor logic also defines a monitor power-up sequence to perform a basic power-up sequence defined in the power-up sequence controller and allow system changes in power initialization. Extra voltage domain(s) may be enabled and monitored according to the monitor power-up sequence. Eventually, multiple power initialization event/state signals are transmitted by the monitor logic to a remote management host through the BMC.
