Abstract
A virtual circuit in a network device reformats one or more incoming data streams at a non-predetermined data rate into an outgoing data stream at a predetermined data rate, thereby allowing multiple data streams with non-predetermined data rates that are less than the predetermined data rate to be combined and output from a single network port.

Abstract
A virtual network device includes a framing circuit that determines a virtual exit device associated with each input frame of a plurality of input frames based on a frame type for each input frame. A plurality of first encapsulated frames is formed based on encapsulation of the plurality of input frames. A plurality of transmit virtual ports, coupled to the framing circuit, determines next hops in a virtual network for the plurality of first encapsulated frames based on the virtual exit devices corresponding to the plurality of first encapsulated frames, and encapsulates the plurality of first encapsulated frames to form a plurality of second encapsulated frames. A transmit virtual switch selectively couples one or more transmit virtual ports to a network physical port based on whether a full signal from the one or more transmit virtual ports has been received by the transmit virtual switch.

Abstract
A virtual forwarding device is described that includes a virtual port which receives a second encapsulated frame from a receive physical port and determines whether a current device is a last hop device. When the current device is not the last hop device, the virtual port unpacks the second encapsulated frame to extract a first encapsulated frame. The virtual port extracts an identifier of a virtual exit device from the first encapsulated frame and determines a next hop device and an alternate hop device from the identifier. When a transmit physical port coupled to the next hop device can accept frames for forwarding, the virtual port encapsulates the first encapsulated frame to form a third encapsulated frame and forwards the third encapsulated frame to the transmit physical port. Else, the virtual port determines whether a transmit physical port coupled to the alternate hop device can accept frames for forwarding.

Abstract
A virtual network includes a virtual entry device, a virtual exit device, and a communication channel that couples the virtual entry device to the virtual exit device in a web that lies between and interconnects a local router/switch with a remote router/switch device, where the virtual entry device and the virtual exit device have static forwarding tables which provide substantially improved performance.

Abstract
A method of forming a virtual network includes forming an arrangement of virtual fibers from physical fiber optic cables that interconnect virtual entry devices, virtual forwarding devices, and virtual exit devices together. The virtual entry devices combine data and frames to allow a number of sources with data and frame rates that are less than a predetermined frame rate of a physical port to be output from the physical port.
