Abstract

A stabilizer attached to a marine tubular assists in inhibiting movement of the marine tubular when it is subjected to forces from ocean currents and waves encountered in subsea and shore crossing zones. The stabilizer includes a first plate and a second plate that are joined on opposite sides of the marine tubular. The stabilizer also includes one or more tubercles that extend from the stabilizer and inhibit motion of the marine tubular. A hydrodynamic shape of the one or more tubercles reduces drag as ocean currents flow over the stabilizer. The tubercle also can increase the moment arm of the stabilizer thereby inhibiting overturning of the stabilizer. The surfaces of the tubercle are shaped to promote the flow of ocean water below the stabilizer when the marine tubular is laid on a seabed or shore crossing zone.

Abstract

The invention provides a method of testing installation of a module (10) on an elongate member (12). The module comprises at least two module parts (14, 16) configured to be assembled to one another around the elongate member (12), together forming a through-going passage (21) for receiving the elongate member (12). The module (10) further comprises at least one resiliently deformable seat (30, 32) within the through-going passage (21) for seating upon the elongate member (10) and an arrangement for securing the module parts to one another, which may take the form of straps (24, 26). The module has a channel (34) extending from an outer surface (17) of the module to the through-going passage (21), so that after assembly of the module parts (14, 16) about the elongate member (12) and securing of them to one another, a test rod or testing tool (36) can be inserted into the channel until it contacts the elongate member (12) within the through-going passage (21), and can be used to determine whether the deformable seats (30, 32) have been sufficiently compressed.

Abstract

The invention concerns a device for protecting an elongate member (244) in a region where the elongate member (244) enters a facility (116) through an aperture (248). The device has a support body (510, 5904) for mounting in the aperture (248), the support body (510, 5904) having a through-going passage (515) to receive the elongate member (244) and an external abutment (658, 5936) for limiting movement of the support body into the aperture (248). Mounted in the support body (510, 5904) is at least one catch body which is pivotally mounted to the support body (510, 5904) for rotation between a stowed position in which an abutment surface of the catch body protrudes into the through passage, and a deployed position in which the catch body protrudes outwardly from the support body (510, 5904). A drive member (840, 6008, 6604) is releasably secured at a predetermined position in the through passageway, In use, with the catch body in its stowed position and by means of a pulling line (264, 2412, 6212, 2720) acting on the drive member (840, 6008, 6604), the support body (510, 5904) is able to be pulled into the aperture (248) until the external abutment (658, 5936) prevents further movement of the support body into the aperture (248), after which the action of the pulling line (264, 2412, 6212, 2720) on the drive member (840, 6008, 6604) is able to release the drive member to move along the through passage, causing the drive member (840, 6008, 6604) to act on the abutment surface of the catch body, turning the catch body to its deployed state so that the catch body prevents subsequent withdrawal of the support body(510, 5904) from the aperture (248).

Abstract

The invention relates to buoyancy for mounting on an elongate member which is to be deployed underwater, which may for example be a cable leading to a floating wind turbine. A buoyancy module (10) comprises a buoyancy body (46) providing a through-going passage (20) to receive the elongate member (12). The through-going passage comprises: a first collar (26) which is for embracing the elongate member and which is coupled to the buoyancy body through a first flexible element (48) permitting some angular movement of the first collar with respect to the buoyancy body; a second collar (28) which is separated from the first collar along the though-going passage, is for embracing the elongate member, and is coupled to the buoyancy body through a second flexible element (50) permitting some angular movement of the second collar with respect to the buoyancy body; and an oversize region between the first collar and the second collar. In use, changes of curvature of the elongate member where it passes through the buoyancy module are accommodated by virtue of angular movement of the first and second collars.

Abstract

A method for locating a rigid support body at a predetermined location with respect to an aperture in a wall of a facility is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: providing a rigid support body at a first position outside a facility, the rigid support body comprising at least one retaining element disposed in a storage position, and comprising a through-bore that extends through the support body from a first end of the support body to a further end; via a first pulling force applied to a first terminal end region of a flexible elongate member that includes a covered region located in the through-bore, urging the rigid support body at least partially through an aperture in a wall of a facility, the rigid support body thereby being located at a further position whereby a portion of the rigid support body and at least one retaining element supported on the rigid support body is within the facility and the retaining element is spaced apart from an inner surface of the wall of the facility; subsequent to location of said retaining element within the facility and in a spaced apart relationship with said inner wall surface, positioning the retaining element out of a storage position by selectively swivelling the retaining element from the storage position; and subsequently urging the rigid support body into a retained position whereby at least a portion of an abutment surface of the retaining element is disposed in an abutting relationship with the inner surface of the wall proximate to the aperture to thereby locate the rigid support body at a predetermined location with respect to the aperture in which the retaining element is disposed in a deployed position.

Abstract

The invention concerns a bend stiffener (10, 32) for locally protecting an elongate flexible member (14) from excessive curvature when the elongate flexible member is deployed in water. The bend stiffener comprises an elongate stiffener body (34) which has a root end, a free end, and a passage (36) extending through the stiffener body from the root end to the free end for receiving and embracing the flexible member. A coupling (16) at or toward the root end of the stiffener body serves to mount the stiffener body. The stiffener body is sufficiently flexible to curve somewhat along with the flexible member when the flexible member suffers a bending load and carries a sensor module which is located proximate the free end of the bend stiffener and is configured to sense inclination and/or orientation and/or movement of the free end of the bend stiffener.

Abstract

A protection assembly for mounting in an underwater support structure includes at least one bend protection device coupled to a retaining device so that together they provide a through-going passage for receiving an elongate member which is to be protected. The elongate member passes through a support structure opening, and the retaining device is configured to be received in the support structure opening and to engage with the support structure to resist subsequent withdrawal from it. Installation of the protection assembly includes grasping the protection assembly with a releasable clamp, arranging a pulling line to pass through the support structure opening to the mechanical clamp and securing the pulling line to the mechanical clamp, drawing the retaining device of the protection assembly into the support structure opening using the pulling line and engaging the retaining device with the support structure, and releasing the clamp from the protection assembly.
