An infusion pump (100) includes a plunger (110) configured to squeeze a section of an infusion tube (150). A proximal valve (120), proximal to the plunger, ascends to allow infusion fluid intake from a reservoir to the infusion tube and descends to inhibit infusion fluid intake from the reservoir to the infusion tube. A distal valve (125), distal to the plunger, ascends to allow infusion fluid flow past the distal valve, and descends to inhibit infusion fluid flow past the distal valve. A controller (141) controls the plunger, proximal valve, and distal valve by initiating descending of the plunger concurrently with or prior to the ascending of the distal valve, such that the descending of the plunger compensates for suction produced by the ascending of the distal valve, thereby reducing backflow of fluid from the subject. Other applications are also described.
An apparatus for delivering a fluid to a subject through infusion tubing (22). The apparatus includes a tube cassette (20) for receiving the infusion tubing. The tube cassette has an anti-free-flow valve (26) configured to (i) occlude the infusion tubing, and (ii) be actuated by a force external to the tube cassette to terminate the occlusion of the infusion tubing. The tube cassette is configured to be removably coupled to a pump (24). The pump is configured to, as part of a pumping cycle for delivering the fluid to the subject, repeatedly (a) actuate the anti-free-flow valve to terminate the occlusion of the infusion tubing, and subsequently (b) release the anti-free-flow valve to occlude the infusion tubing. Other applications are also described.
A tube cassette (22) for receiving infusion tubing is shaped to define a locking surface (26). A pump (20) includes a latch (28) which engages with the locking surface and locks the cassette in a preset position with respect to the pump. A mechanical stop (38) in the pump stops motion of the cassette in a first direction, such that the cassette has moved past the preset position. Until motion of the cassette is stopped by the mechanical stop, the latch allows motion of the cassette past the preset position in the first direction. The latch automatically moves from an open position to a cassette-withdrawal-inhibiting position upon engagement of the latch with the locking surface, and subsequently locks the cassette in the preset position by pushing the cassette in a second direction, from past the preset position to the preset position. Other applications are also described.
An infusion pump includes upstream and downstream valves, a pressing surface disposed between the valves which presses on an infusion tube, a pressure sensor which measures pressure within the infusion tube, and a controller. In response to the pressure, the controller determines that there is an occlusion in the infusion tube downstream of the downstream valve, and in response thereto, toggles the upstream valve and the downstream valve. The toggling includes sequentially, (a) while the upstream valve remains closed, isolating a segment of the infusion tube between the valves by closing the downstream valve, (b) while the downstream valve remains closed, reducing pressure in the isolated segment by opening the upstream valve, (c) while the downstream valve remains closed, closing the upstream valve, and (d) while the upstream valve remains closed, reducing pressure downstream of the downstream valve by opening the downstream valve. Other applications are also described.

The present invention includes a finger-type peristaltic pump with a ribbed anvil. According to some embodiments, a finger type peristaltic pump may comprise a plurality of pressing fingers, an infusion tube and a passive interfacing mechanism. The passive interfacing mechanism may comprise a channel, groove or other suitable mount for placing and mounting an infusion tube such that the pressing fingers are positioned on one side of the tube and the ribbed anvil on the opposite side. The pressing fingers may be positioned to apply an approximately perpendicular force on the tube, pressing it against the ribbed anvil, thus causing a pumping action.
An intravenous pump system includes an intravenous pump having an air bubble detector, a separate air trap module and a patient line. The air trap module is connectable to a set interface upon which the pump can operate. The air trap module includes an air chamber capable of receiving fluids and air, a plurality of valves controlling the flow of the fluids and air, and an air vent. The patient line is connectable to the air trap module and to a patient. The air trap module includes an actuator to control the state of the valves to enable, at least during a venting mode, the pump to push air out of the air chamber via the vent without disconnecting the patient from the patient line.

A peristaltic pump includes a conduit having a first end for receiving a fluid from a reservoir and a second end for delivering the fluid. A plurality of fingers are disposed at respective locations along a segment of the conduit and are configured to alternately compress and release the conduit at the locations. A cyclical pump mechanism is coupled to move the fingers between respective compressed and released positions in a spatio-temporal pattern so as to drive a predetermined quantity of the fluid through the segment of the conduit in each pump cycle. A motor is coupled to drive the pump mechanism. A controller is coupled to activate and deactivate the motor in alternation during each pump cycle with a duty cycle that varies within the pump cycle.
The present invention discloses an anti-free flow mechanism for a finger-type peristaltic infusion pump (DDS) and methods for avoiding anti-free-flow. The mechanism comprises: a passive mechanical interface (MS) which integrally accommodates a portion of the flexible infusion tube, and an anti-free flow valve (AFFV) which is a spring-activated latch, which is incorporated within said MS. The maneuverable latch is secured in the MS either in CLOSED or OPEN configurations: in its CLOSED configuration no flow is provided, and in its OPEN configuration, a free flow is facilitated. Said anti-free flow mechanism is configured in a manner such that when the MS is not properly mounted in the DDS, said AFFV is automatically actuated via one or more integrated springs, to its CLOSED configuration. When the MS is properly mounted in the DDS, said latch is adapted to be automatically switched to the OPEN configuration.
The present invention discloses a finer-type peristaltic infusion pump comprising a ribbed anvil. More specifically, a finger-type peristaltic pump, comprising a plurality of pressing-fingers, infusion-tube, and a passive interfacing mechanism is disclosed. The passive interfacing mechanism comprises of means for accommodating said flexible infusion tube and mounting the tube in a location suitable for the pressing-fingers to apply an approximated perpendicular force on said tube to squeeze it; a ribbed anvil rigidly supporting the tube on opposite side to the pressing fingers when it is pressed by said finger; said anvil comprising a plurality of ribs selected from one or more ribs of a group including a plurality of ribs oriented to face said fingers' tip, a plurality of ribs located in between said fingers, or any combination thereof.
A peristaltic pump includes a plurality of effecters, actuated in a periodic manner upon by obstructive forces of a flexible infusion tube so as flow of infusion fluid is provided along said infusion tube, the magnitude of the obstructive forces being dependent upon the displacement of said moving effecters; and a plurality of balancing magnets providing balancing forces upon one or all the moving effecters, the balancing forces at each point along the path of motion of the moving effecters being of approximately equal magnitude to that of the obstructive forces at the point; such that the parasitic output due to work performed against the obstructive forces is approximately zero and yield is maximized.
A medical device includes an interface unit body, which is configured to hold a portion of a flexible infusion tube. A hinge insert is fixed to the interface unit body and is configured to engage a hinge receptacle, which defines a hinge axis, on an infusion pump. A catch insert is fixed to the interface unit body and is configured to lock onto a catch receptacle on the infusion pump upon rotation of the mechanical interface unit about the hinge axis while the hinge insert engages the hinge receptacle, so as to bring the tube into engagement with a peristaltic mechanism of the infusion pump in order to enable the peristaltic mechanism to propel a fluid through the tube.
The invention provides a finger-type peristaltic pump (2) having a body (4) and a housing (6). The body contains two or more finger-type valves (16) and a processor (22) configured to operate the valves according to a predetermined temporo-spatial pattern. The housing has a passageway (18) configured to receive a conduit. The housing has a first position in which a conduit in the passageway is positioned adjacent to the valve fingers, and a second position in which a conduit in the passageway is not adjacent to the valve fingers. The invention also provides a housing for use in the pump of the invention.
