Abstract

A light fixture includes side wall sections having first surfaces facing towards each other, a light source on the first surface of at least one of the side wall sections and positioned so that a maximum intensity direction of a light distribution pattern of the light source is towards the other side wall section, and a lens section that constitutes an optical diverter that directs a first part of light emitted by the light source obliquely via a gap between first edges of the side wall sections and a second part of the light obliquely via a gap between second edges of the side wall sections. Thus, the light fixture can illuminate both a floor and a ceiling so that light emitted to unwanted directions and potentially causing unwanted bright spots and/or glare can be kept at a low level.

Abstract

An optical device (201) comprises a center portion (203) and a reflector portion (204) surrounding the center portion and comprising a reflector surface (205) configured to provide total internal reflection. The center portion comprises a first lens section (206) and a second lens section (207) after the first lens section in a propagation direction of light. A projection of a light ingress surface (208) of the first lens section on a geometric plane (xy) perpendicular to a geometric line (z) through center of mass points of the first and second lens sections is smaller than a corresponding projection of a light ingress surface (210) of the second lens section on the geometric plane. As there are the two successive lens sections, a desired collimation effect can be achieved even if the lens sections are sufficiently thin from the viewpoint of manufacturing.

Abstract

A light fixture (100) comprises side wall sections (101, 102) having first surfaces facing towards each other, a light source (103, 104) on the first surface of at least one of the side wall sections and positioned so that a maximum intensity direction of a light distribution pattern of the light source is towards the other side wall section, and a lens section (105, 106) that constitutes an optical diverter that directs a first part of light emitted by the light source obliquely via a gap (107) between first edges of the side wall sections and a second part of the light obliquely via a gap (108) between second edges of the side wall sections. Thus, the light fixture can illuminate both a floor and a ceiling so that light emitted to unwanted directions and potentially causing unwanted bright spots and/or glare can be kept at a low level.

Abstract

An optical device (101) for modifying a light distribution is made of transparent material and comprises a front wall (102) constituting a front portion (103), a coupling portion (104) for connecting to a light source system, and side walls (105, 106) between the coupling portion and the front portion. The front wall is configured to let through a first part of light emitted by the light source, and the side walls are configured to let through a second part of the light. The side walls have grooves (107) that refract at least 80 % of the second part of the light obliquely rearwards with respect to a direction (d) from the coupling portion to the front portion. Thus, the optical device can be used for illuminating both a floor and a ceiling so that light emitted to unwanted directions and potentially causing glare can be kept at a low level.

Abstract

An optical device includes first and second optical elements rotatable with respect to each other around a geometric optical axis of the optical device. The first optical element includes a first surface for modifying a distribution of light exiting the first optical element, and the second optical element includes a second surface facing towards the first surface and for further modifying the distribution of the light. One of the first and second surfaces includes convex areas whereas the other one of these surfaces includes concave areas so that an optical effect of the optical device is changeable by rotating the first and second optical elements with respect to each other. The first and second optical elements include sliding surfaces for mechanically supporting the second optical element with respect to first optical element in radial directions perpendicular to the geometric optical axis.

Abstract

i) of the light at the light-egress surface is a polarization angle at which a p-polarized component of the light is transmitted through the light-egress surface without being reflected by the light-egress surface. Thus, unwanted reflections at the light-egress surface can be reduced and thereby unwanted scattering of light is reduced while having good transmitting efficacy.

Abstract

An optical device for modifying a light distribution pattern of a light source is presented. The light source radiates first light beams to a first geometric quarter-space and second light beams to a second geometric quarter-space, where the first and second quarter-spaces are defined by mutually perpendicular geometric planes one of which constitutes a boundary between the first and second geometric quarter-spaces. The optical device includes a lens-section for modifying a light distribution pattern of the first light beams and two reflector surfaces for reflecting the second light beams from the second geometric quarter-space to the first geometric quarter-space. The two reflector surfaces are successively in a direction perpendicular to the boundary between the first and second geometric quarter-spaces and make it possible that the optical device can be lower than in a case where only one reflector surface is used.

Abstract

An optical device (201) comprises a lens (205) having a light ingress surface (206) and a light egress surface (207). The light ingress surface comprises one or more V-shaped projections on a center area (208) of the light ingress surface and the light ingress surface is free from corners on areas (209) outside the center area. Each V-shaped projection is shaped so that a surface penetration takes place when a light beam arrives at a side surface of the V-shaped projection and a total internal reflection takes place when the light beam arrives at the other side surface of the V-shaped projection. Thus, obliquely arriving light beams emitted by edge areas of a light emitting surface (213) of a light source (202) are mixed better with light beams emitted by other areas of the light emitting surface. Therefore, undesired color variations within a light distribution pattern are reduced.

Abstract

An optical device includes a center section having a lens portion for modifying distribution of a first part of light emitted by a light source, and a peripheral section surrounding the center section and including a conical surface for modifying distribution of a second part of the light emitted by the light source. The conical surface includes ridges where total internal reflection takes place when a light beam arrives from the light source at one of side surfaces of each ridge, and surface penetration takes place when the reflected light beam arrives at the other side surface of the ridge under consideration. Thus, the conical surface acts both as a reflective surface and as a refractive surface for achieving a desired light distribution pattern.

Abstract

A device for modifying light distribution includes a transparent body including a first surface, a second surface on an opposite side of the transparent body, and a third surface joining the first surface. The second surface defines a cavity opening away from the first surface. The second surface reflects, towards the third surface, at least a part of light received via the first surface. The third surface reflects, towards the second surface, the light reflected from the second surface. The second surface acts as a light egress surface for the light reflected from the third surface. The third surface includes a groove so that a part of the light reflected from the second surface propagates across the groove prior to being reflected from the third surface. The light distribution can be tuned by adjusting the shape, the size, and/or the location of the groove.

Abstract

A device for modifying light distribution comprises a reflector surface (310) whose shape is at least partly based on a shape transformation directed to a geometric auxiliary surface (330). The shape transformation comprises i) division of the geometric auxiliary surface into longitudinal geometric surface segments (314', 315'), ii) displacements of at least some of the surface segments sideward so as to achieve a desired shape, and iii) addition of geometric connection-surfaces (316) between surface segments that are at least partly separated from each other by the displacements so as to form a stepped geometric surface corresponding to at least a part of the reflector surface. The geometric auxiliary surface can be select- ed according to a desired intensity distribution within an illumination pattern formable on a planar surface, whereas the shape obtained with the shape transformation can be selected according to the desired shape of the illumination pattern.

Abstract

A low-beam headlight element includes a lens (301) for modifying the distribution pattern of light penetrating the lens, and a reflector element (302) including a first end having a place for a light source (303) and a second end having an opening constituting a passage for the light penetrating the lens. The thickness of the lens is shaped to decrease more strongly towards a first edge (303) of the lens than towards an opposite second edge of lens so as to provide more refractivity on a first area of the lens abutting on the first edge than on a second area of the lens abutting on the second edge. The refractivity on the first area produces a cutoff line in a resulting light distribution pattern. Hence, for achieving a cutoff line meandering in a desired way, there is no need for a screen element which converts light into heat.

Abstract

An optical system comprises one or more lens elements (102, 103) for modifying a light distribution pattern, support elements (106) for securing the lens elements to a body structure, and elongated seal sections (108, 109) for constituting elongated sealing contact areas with the lens elements and with the body structure. Each support element comprises a sealing section (111) for constituting auxiliary sealing contact areas with at least one of the lens elements and with the body structure so that the auxiliary sealing contact areas constitute a ring-shaped sealing contact area surrounding at least one of end-sections (118, 119) of the lens elements. The sealing sections of the support elements and the elongated seal sections are capable of sealing spatial room limited by the lens elements and the body structure. The sealing achievable with the support elements makes it unnecessary to seal each of the lens elements separately.

Abstract

A light guide (201) including a transparent element is presented. The transparent element includes a first surface (203) for acting as a light-ingress surface and a second surface (204) for acting as a light-egress surface. The second surface includes elevations (205) for directing a part of the light into directions sideward with respect to a direction in which another and greater part of the light exits the transparent element through the second surface. Each elevation is shaped to provide total internal reflection for a light beam on a first point of the surface of the elevation and refract the reflected light beam on a second point of the surface of the elevation so as to direct the light beam sideward. The sideward directed light enables an observer, who sees the light guide from a small viewing angle, to easily see whether the light is on or off.

Abstract

A process for fabricating an optical device comprises injecting (301) optical silicone into a mold cavity formed by two or more mutually matching mold-elements (202, 203), curing (302) the optical silicone contained by the mold cavity, and separating (303) the mold-elements from the optical device (201) constituted by the optical silicone. The reversible elasticity of the optical silicone after the curing phase is utilized in the process so that at least one of the mold-elements has an undercut (counterdraft) which causes a reversible deformation in the optical device when the mold-element is separated from the optical device. As the undercut (counterdraft) is allowable, the shape of the optical device as well as the dividing joints between the mold-elements can be designed more freely. For example, walls of the mold cavity corresponding to optically active surfaces of the optical device can be arranged to be free from dividing joints between the mold-elements.

Abstract

A low-beam headlight element (600) comprises a lens (301, 401, 501) for modifying the distribution pattern of light penetrating the lens (301, 401, 501), and a reflector element (302, 502) comprising a first end having a place for a light source (307) and a second end having an opening constituting a passage for the light penetrating the lens (301, 401, 501). The thickness of the lens (301, 401, 501) is shaped to decrease more strongly towards a first edge (303) of the lens than towards an opposite second edge (204) of lens (301, 401, 501) so as to provide more refractivity on a first area (205) of the lens (301, 401, 501) abutting on the first edge (303) than on a second area (206) of the lens (301, 401, 501) abutting on the second edge (204). The refractivity on the first area (205) produces a cutoff line (311, 411, 511) in a resulting light distribution pattern. Hence, for achieving a cutoff line (311, 411, 511) meandering in a desired way, there is no need for a screen element which converts light into heat.

Abstract

A light guide comprising a transparent element (201) is presented. The transparent element is made of transparent material whose refractive index is greater than unity. The transparent element comprises a first surface having light-ingress sections each suitable for receiving light and a second surface having light-egress sections. The transparent material between the light-ingress sections and the light-egress sections constitutes lenses for modifying the light distribution patterns of light received by the light-ingress sections. The transparent element comprises one or more grooves (205-208) enabling the transparent element to be divided into two or more pieces by bending the transparent element along the grooves so that each of the pieces comprises at least one of the lenses. Hence, the light guide can be easily adapted to be suitable for different illuminator systems having different number of light sources such as light emitting diodes LED.
